A scarce early WW2 era wooden Air Raid Precautions Gas Rattle, embossed stamped to the top section for ‘A.R.P’ and the makers mark of W.Clements & Sons, and a date of 1939. Together with a metal ARP whistle, marked ‘Noble Whistle’. Although the whistle is not marked ARP in the usual way, it exactly follows the patterns used by ARP personnel. Notes: the rattle is of usual form, with a turned wooden handle, and ratchet mechanism to create the distinctive sound. Information supplied by the vendor suggests that the items were used around the Chester Green area of Derby during WW2. Approximately 27cm across the top section, and a height of 22.5cm. Condition: generally good. The rattle has normal service wear, with a consistent colour and patina to the wood. We have not attempted to try the rattle in the manner originally intended, but it would seem to operate normally when slowly turned (and is still quite loud!). The whistle has some shallow dents to the body in a few places, but is complete and would no doubt work.

While the first steam-powered fire engine had been developed by John Braithwaite and John Ericsson in 1829, the first commercially successful fire-engine was a water-borne version developed by Shand Mason & Co, which went into service in 1855. From this point and particularly from the 1860s, the company worked with the chief of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Eyre Massey Shaw and with competitor Merryweather & Sons, to perfect designs for land-based use by the London brigade and other municipalities. Its first land-based engine used by the brigade was produced in 1860. Its engines were initially horse-drawn, but later installed on fireboats (Europe's first, the Fire Queen was built by Shand Mason for service in Bristol's docks in the 1880s) and mounted on motor vehicles. The business was eventually taken over by Merryweather & Sons in 1928.Comments: surface dust, battery compartment wiring loose, NB. NOT tested for pressure, sold as a decorative model, not a working engine.

Registration No: WC 1264 Chassis No: 151112 MOT: ExemptRecently fitted with a handbrake, ratchet quadrant and starter motorConverted in-period to a Pickup by a Dordogne butcher during WWIIOffered with some original documentation, various manuals and the current V5C documentAn evolution of its B2 and B10 predecessors, the B12 was introduced in October 1925. Available with a diverse choice of all-steel bodywork (made to Budd patents), its uprated, quarter-elliptic leaf-sprung chassis featured worm and roller steering, rear shock absorbers and four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a willing 1452cc four-cylinder side-valve engine mated to a three-speed manual gearbox, the B12 was quick to establish a reputation for durability and economy. In production for less than two years, surviving examples are an understandably scarce sight today. This Citroen B12 was built in 1925 (verified by Stellantis-Citroen UK) as a Saloon. Purchased as a non-runner in 2021, some missing parts have since been sourced in France and the now engine starts and runs via the starter motor or starting handle. The vendors purchased the B12 due to an interest in WWII history, of which there is plenty. It was converted to a Pickup (Plateau) by a butcher in the Dordogne during WWII, to enable him to obtain fuel from the Nazi occupiers who issued coupons to owners of commercial vehicles. When Germany finally retreated and liberation came, vehicles were painted with Free French Independence (FFI) insignia to participate in victory celebrations. The butcher then sold it to a local vineyard owner. An Englishman spotted the Pickup in a field in the late 1980s and purchased it, subsequently featuring in a number of magazines.Since 2021 the Pickup has benefitted from much expenditure, including replacement of the flat bed, the fuel lines, battery and cradle and the 6v windscreen wiper motor; refurbishment of the steering wheel, wiring loom, matching door cards and fabricating period registration plates. The Citroen was granted an age-related number in January 2024. Some original documentation and various manuals are included along with the V5C.
