A George III mahogany longcase clock by Thomas Thompson Liverpool, with eight day striking movement with moon phase, dial width 13 1/4", the case with long trunk door flanked by fluted quarter column corners with well figured panel base raised on ogee moulded bracket feet. Height 235 cm, hood width 56.5 cm(see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The movement winds on both trains and is currently ticking away and striking as it should. It seems to be keeping good time. The moon phase appears to be working as does the date. The case is in generally good condition. There are some cracks to the verre eglomise in the swans neck. The hood door is not warped. There are some nibbles to the edge of the hood door and to the side panel at the front but again this is not problematic. The rear of the hood side panel has a loose slither of timber but we have piece. The main trunk door is not significantly warped and locks as it should. There are some veneer stress fractures as one would expect but no real issues with the door. The sides of the trunk are in good order. The base is in generally good condition also. The base panel is slightly sprung at the bottom left hand corner. We can see no evidence of any woodworm. The height excluding the central finial is 230 cm.

Lot 1272

A pair of 1930's oak four tier sectional bookcases, with bobbin mouldings each tier with a pair of doors. 141 cm high, 89 cm wide, 32 cm deep. CONDITION REPORT: Both bookcases are in generally good condition with no significant issues. They do not appear to have had any repairs or restoration. The colour is uniform. There is no cracked glass and no significant cracks or damage to the oak. There are the usual small and minor scuffs and scratches that one would expect from items of this age but no real problems. The doors snap shut with a sprung loaded ball bearing. This is on the right hand door to each of the bookcases. Two of the ball bearings are missing as is one spring. This is only a minor defect but worth pointing out. All other doors snap shut as they should.

Lot 1407

A 19th century mahogany dining table, comprising two D ends, each with drop leaf and raised on eight tapered legs of square section terminating in spade feet. Height 77 cm, width 109 cm, length extended 204 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The table is structurally sound and in generally good condition. The top is flat with no splits. It is a good colour. There are all of the usual old marks but no real problems. The leaves are not warped. They are of a similar colour to the ends. The frieze is in good condition all round with only minor nibbles to the boxwood and ebony strung edge. All legs are in good order with no repairs. One leaf has four later plywood spaces fixed to the underside. This is so the table top rests on the top of the gate legs. This is a little unsightly but clearly not visible unless you are underneath the table. The softwood bearers have traces of woodworm. This appears long gone but should perhaps be treated.

Lot 1460

An early 19th century mahogany chest of drawers, with slide above three long graduated drawers with wooden knob handles and all raised on splayed bracket feet. Height 92 cm, width 95 cm, depth 52 cm. There are small sections of the boxwood strung edge missing on the right-hand return. Slide operates as it should. The drawers are all in basically good order. The top drawer is missing the left-hand section of cockbeading and there are other nibbles around the bottom right-hand corner. The runner between the slide and the top drawer has veneer losses to the up rights on the left and right-hand side. Beneath the second drawer there is a small section of cockbeading missing and again a small veneer loss on the drawer runner. The sides of the chest are in generally good condition with no significant splits. The backboards are original. All bracket feet are original and present. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.

These beliefs shaped Luce's political philosophy of anarchism. In 1894 he was arrested for the suspected involvement in the assassination of President Marie Francois Sadi Carnot. He was released two days later and created a series of lithographs to document his experience and other political prisoners whilst confined in Mazas prison. Steven Gregory (b.1952) School of the Said William, 2008 pen and ink on conserved antique vellum document 59 x 73 cm. Since 2002, the central theme to Steven Gregory’s work has featured human bones and skulls as a celebration of both life and death, which caught the eye of Damien Hirst in the same year. Hirst bought seven of the skulls for his personal collection and wrote a foreword for Gregory’s exhibition, Skulduggery, in 2005 at the Cass Sculpture Foundation. “Steven Gregory… creates art that prods and pokes, ignores and strokes and slaps and stuns us into submission. My own personal favourites are the real human skull and bone pieces where just as many humans and pre-humans have done before us for tens of thousands of years, he uses decoration to try to deal with the complexity of human death, a brave attempt to celebrate the unimaginable.” Born in South Africa, Steven Gregory studied sculpture at St Martin’s School of Art, London and went on to complete a stone mason’s apprenticeship, which led him to work on Westminster Abbey and other historic buildings. Committed to mastering traditional skills and materials, he works with a wide range of materials including precious metals, bronze, Perspex and mixed media, as well as human bones. Gregory has responded to cultural currents with a postmodern eye and often a dashing sense of satire. Fish on a Bicycle (1998) is a witty response to the feminist dictum ‘A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle’; the sinister Bag Men (1993) animate the humble paper bag as bogey men; and his Paparazzi (1996) are subsumed by their apparatus. Gregory has exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally, including in Germany, France, Italy, Iceland, USA and Czech Republic. His solo exhibitions include Skulduggery, at the Cass Sculpture Foundation (2005), and Bone Stone Bronze at the Nicholas Robinson Gallery in New York (2007). At the Serpentine Gallery, London (2006-7), Damien Hirst included skull works by Gregory as part of In the darkest hour there may be light, works from Hirst’s own Murderme Collection. Gregory has contributed to many other major exhibitions, including Thinking Big: Concepts for Twenty-first Century British Sculpture, at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, Venice (2002-3), and Animal Fantastique at Les Amis du Doujon deVes, Paris (2002). Gregory is an Artist Friend of Jesus College, University of Cambridge. He now lives in Hastings.

- Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

2007 ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM DROPHEAD COUPE. Registration Number: XXI 37, Chassis Number: SCA2068058UH07002, Engine Number: 60583963 . This Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé is the second of this model ever to be produced, of only 3,000 to be made in Goodwood. The first car off the production line was sold for $2,000,000 at auction in Florida and XXI37 was used for the press launch. In 2015, the Phantom Drophead was the most expensive Rolls-Royce model, retailing at $533,000. Three Drophead Coupés were used in the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, with British Pop Stars Jessie J, Tinie Tempah and Taio Cruz all singing from them. 'This is a truly unique car and one that exudes top-notch pedigree. Just seeing one is a real occasion, and that's before you get behind the wheel.' Car Magazine. Luxury and driving experience are obviously paramount in the design of the Phantom Drophead. It is a prime example of how BMW managed to rejuvenate the Rolls-Royce brand post-acquisition. It started out life in 2004 as an experimental display model called 100EX, built to celebrate Rolls-Royce's centenary. The clamour from enthusiasts to put the car into production was so strong that the first Drophead, remarkably similar to the 100EX, appeared in 2007. It made a triumphant appearance at the Detroit Motor Show and was much heralded by the automotive press. Among its unique features It has its own dedicated lightweight aluminium space frame, exclusive to the Drophead model, which accommodates the convertible design and provide extra stiffness. Inspired by the beautiful Riva luxury boats, the car has a yacht-like appearance with a teak tonneau roof cover and door caps. Front opening coach doors make it easy to access the rear seat and can be opened and closed at the press of a button.Luggage is housed within a picnic boot, a split tail compartment that opens in two parts giving easy access to the of space. The tailgate also provides a comfortable seating platform for two adults when lowered. Careful engineering of the folding soft-top roof means that it stows in a small space, and the luggage compartment remains unaffected regardless of whether the roof is up or down. The fabric hood is the largest of any modern convertible car and its acoustic insulation is exemplary. Five layers of material lined with cashmere ensure that the cabin remains a serene space, even at speed. The scale of the car is matched by the massive 21 inch wheel rims. Rolls-Royce set out to make a car curated to the individuality of each driver, with thousands of options available for each build. Indeed, XXI37 features some of the most expensive ones, which is befitting for a press launch car. The car is finished in a beautiful combination of Admiral Blue metallic with a brushed steel bonnet. This bonnet is machine finished at the factory to give a uniform grain, before undergoing extensive hand polishing to achieve a perfect sheen. At the rear, the teak decking is treated by Rolls-Royce with a carefully blended mix of oils. This preserves a natural finish and a long-lasting lustre that is as beautiful as it is hardy. The interior is finished with a beautiful rosewood veneer dash and cream leather upholstery. The details inside are remarkably "Rolls-Royce", notably the engraved Phantom silver logo and stunning umbrella holders in both doors. The exterior has a fine white coach line painted with an exceptionally steady hand. Under the bonnet is clean example of the massive 6.75 litre 435bhp V12 engine, a widely regarded extraordinary machine. The engine that has huge amounts of power and yet remains quietly dignified. Capable of 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph, the car exhibits incredibly high performance. At the same time, it is so quiet when idling that you would think the engine was switched off. The drive quality is so supreme that the experience is often referred to as the "magic carpet ride". There is ample service history supporting the car, with only 39,000 miles driven, it has clearly been well maintained and always garaged. An original brochure and recent service records are also present with the car.In the Phantom Drophead, Rolls-Royce have created the ultimate convertible model for luxury touring, a car that epitomises prestige. Production ceased in 2016 and the company has announced that there are no plans to make a Drophead version of the latest Phantom VIII saloon, making this the last of a vanishing breed. The sale of XX137 offers the buyer a chance to join a canon of privileged motorists.Buyer's Premium on lots 1 - 18 10% (plus VAT), All other lots 25% (plus VAT).
