Registration - P951 FJCChassis No. - WVWZZZ1HZVW165280M.O.T. - February 2025Odometer - 42,619Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk3 are starting to become collectible, and this car is surely one of the finest out there. With just 42,619 miles reading on the odometer, the five-door model is resplendent in Dragon Green and is described as a true time-warp example. It is a well-equipped car, with the desirable option of air conditioning. It has every receipt for service, repairs and MOT since 1996, and was even serviced at a Volkswagen main dealer until 2007, then the same local independent thereafter. Garaged since new, the car was originally owned by the vendor’s uncle. The V5, they explain, shows more owners than this, because he transferred it into his wife’s name, then back to himself, then to the vendor’s wife when the original owner passed away. In terms of condition, they report it is 'excellent' throughout, from engine and transmission, to bodywork, paintwork, interior and electrics. The car has an MOT until February 2025, and is said to drive beautifully. The Volkswagen Golf Mk3 was launched in 1992 as a much more modern and eco-friendly replacement for the long-running Golf Mk2. It was a stylish, rounded and aerodynamic new Golf, broadening the appeal of the model considerably. The fabled GTI versions sat at the top of the range, this time majoring on refinement and sophistication rather than all-out performance and thrills. This car is a later 2.0-litre 8v version, which replaced the original 1.8-litre engine a few years into the Mk3 Golf’s life. There was also a high-revving Golf GTI 16v, but for relaxed modern classic motoring, this 8v is still a strong choice. In summary:· Time-warp Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk3· Just 42,000 miles on the odometer· One family owner and a bulging history file

This lot comprises 12 letters or documents all with content relating to the Military examples include: 1703 letter from Lord John Cutts in The Hague relating to the opening of letters received. 1725 letter relating to a dispute concerning Lord Forrester addressed to Sir Spencer Compton, Paymaster General. 1725 letter to Henry Pelham (Secretary of War) relating to unserviceable members of a Regiment with three certificates signed the Commanding Officers. 1745 document in Spanish signed at Cadiz on 5th February by Francisco De Varas y Valdes and addressed to Rodrigo de Torres.  1749 certificate of a soldier's death. 1753 receipt for two barrels of Corn'd Powder from the Office of Ordnance. 1767 four page long letter from David Greene relating to the 49th Regiment and all sorts of difficulties that led the writer to have an audience with King George III to which he                 refers in this letter.  1786 receipt signed by William Scott relating to money received in 1783, paid off in 1786. There is a fine impressed seal on the front and black crown/ten pence quire mark on  back. 1795 letter from Frederick Hill-Flight on HMS Victory at Spithead (in the Solent) addressed to Charles Cox with fine curved Portsmouth on the address side. The letter requests money and states that the writer is going to the Mediterranean. Less than four months later the Victory was involved in the Battle of Hyeres in the Mediterranean.  Please see an excerpt from Lord Cutts letter to Mr Watkins below: 1703 from the Hague - Sir I have presumed to look into the packets, I used to look into by your leave and it fell out luckily that I opened Cardonel's packet for there was in it a letter from his Grace to me, one to Monsieur Geldermalsen and one to General Scolos, the Danish Lieutenant General besides two to Grosslier, all of which I took care of. You may depend upon my Secrecy as well as Honour, where is requisite; and I open no letters when I don't know the hand or when I do and think it private business. I think the Satire they send you very unkind to some of our friends; and I would advise you (as a real friend) not to show it.... -

Lot 84

This lot comprises the original documents submitted to Counsel for Birmingham workman George Hall in the defence of an indictment for murder. Included are the Brief to Counsel to appear at Warwick Spring Assizes; notes or evidence taken at the Coroner's Inquest and at the Magistrates Court; various evidence of witnesses; a contemporaneous 8 paper booklet commenting on the case; 9 telegrams about the case together with some receipts issued by The Electric and International Telegraph Company; a receipt from the Queen's Hotel, Birmingham for lunch; 7 papers of 'memorials' of persons approving a "recommendation to mercy made by the Jury [...] "therefore earnestly implore that the life of this unhappy young man and may be spared". George Hall aged 22 married Sarah Ann Smith on Christmas Day 1863. The very evening she left him claiming illness and returned to her mother's house, whereupon she immediately resumed a relationship with a previous lover. Her mother and stepfather brought her back to Hall, but she left again and continued her relationship with her lover. On the 16th February he bought a pair of pistols and that evening called to see Sarah and her mother. He and Sarah went for a walk during which he shot her in the head, confessing the fact to a local publican and then to his own parents. Hall's defence relied on provocation so as to reduce the offence to manslaughter; also it was claimed that the shooting was accidental. The judge rejected these defences in summing up for the jury and Hall was convicted of murder but the jury made a strong recommendation to mercy on account of the provocation suffered by him. Hall made a persuasive speech upon hearing the verdict including "I have kept company with her for more than 3 years and during that time there is no man on earth that loves a girl better; and in all that time she loved another.....". There followed numerous attempts to reprieve Hall including a mass petition as the case provoked considerable public interest and a leader in The Times arguing that the definition of murder embraces offences vastly differing in moral guilt. There were murders, it noted, in which the slayer appears to be scarcely less a victim that the slain and Hall's act was one of those. The Home Secretary consulted the Lord Chancellor about the case and the latter advised him that a more deliberate and coolly premeditated murder can hardly be imagined. It would be most dangerous of consequences to society if such provocation "adultery" were accepted as a reason for not capitally punishing the husband when he commits a coolly premeditated murder. The scaffold was erected at Warwick but at virtually the last moment Hall's sentence was changed to one of imprisonment for life, having regard to the deluge of support for him throughout the land. In March 1884, some 20 years later after the trial, Hall was discharged. He was greeted at New Street Station in Birmingham by thousands of people.  -
