JURA 18 YEAR OLDSingle malt. With deer outnumbering people by around 25 to 1, it’s surprising the isle of Jura can sustain a distillery at all, let alone a decent sized one capable of supplying 2.2 million litres of spirit per annum. Although it was originally founded in 1810, the distillery closed at the turn of the century and wasn’t revived until the 1960 when it was completely rebuilt by two of the island’s local landowners.Despite the abundant peat available on the island, Jura’s style has tended to be somewhat lighter, as dictated by the blending requirements of its owners over the years. Today it is operated by Whyte & MacKay, under the Emperador umbrella. The 18 Year Old is finished in red wine casks.44% ABV / 70cl
GLENMORANGIE MILSEANSingle malt.Famous for their unique stills, each as tall as an adult giraffe, and their passion for innovation, Glenmorangie remains one of the best-selling single malts in the world. They were one of the first distilleries to experiment with cask finishing; the process of transferring spirit from one cask type to another in order to impart additional characteristics and flavours. To further this agenda of innovation, in September of 2021 Glenmorangie began production at their new “Lighthouse” facility, a futuristic R&D department protruding from the heart of their traditional distillery complex like a monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Off limits to the public, it is home to a “sensory lab” as well as two of Glenmorangie’s signature stills, each of which plays host to several classified modifications. Only time will tell what exciting innovations will filter down to the rest of the industry.Part of the Private Collection, the Milsean has been finished in toasted red wine barriques.46% ABV / 70cl

Fullt title: A Dutch-decorated Japanese Arita apothecary flask monogrammed PDR, Edo, 17th C.Description: H.: 32 cm Condition: (UV-checked)- Excellent, apart from a drilled hole to the base. ______________)- ______ On the base, decorated in Japan in underglaze blue, are the initials PDR inside a wreath. Apart from that, the bottle was left blank, but was overdecorated in the Kakiemon style in Holland in red, green, and blue enamels with gold, called 'Amsterdams Bont' or clobbered. The initials PDR possibly stand for Paulus de Roo. Paulus de Roo was born in Batavia in 1658, son of Cornelis de Roo opperchirurgijn (head-chirurgeon) of the VOC and Anna Andriessen. In 1685 he was a merchant and fiscal (public prosecutor) in Dutch Suratte. In 1689 he was Boekhouder-Generaal (head-bookkeeper) in Batavia and Secretary of the High Government in Batavia in 1690. In 1694 he was appointed Commmisaris of Suratte on the Malabar Coast, where he died in 1695. There were whispers that he was poisoned because he had made enemies by suggesting bookkeeping improvements and being too honest. He left behind his wife, Sebastiana Zas and three children. Paulus de Roo had never been stationed in Japan, but the Governor-general under whom he served, Johannes Camphuys, had been Opperhoofd in Japan three times, from 1671-1673, 1673-1674 and 1675-1676. There are a few Arita wine bottles known with his initials I.C also inside a wreath on the base (see Uit Verre Streken, November 2015, no. 44). Paulus de Roo and Johannes Camphuys were close friends, and the present bottle might have been a present by Camphuys to his friend De Roo. To add to the suspicious death of De Roo: they both died in 1695… (source: Zebregs and Roell)

This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.11580-199029. Wide-mouthed bell kraters like this one were specifically designed for holding large quantities of liquid and to work as mixing bowls, as it was considered barbaric for wine to be drunk neat (a privilege only enjoyed by Dionysus and his entourage who could handle such a level of intoxication). Wine would be mixed with water, usually one part to three, or even more, as described by Homer regarding the wine offered to the giant Polyphemus (Odyssey, IX, 206-211). As such, kraters provided an ideal large surface area for decoration, and as wine was of utmost importance at the symposium, kraters would usually take centre place, and the decoration of such vessels were geared towards such gatherings attempting to provide subject matter for philosophical debate, like the ones described in Athenaeus’ Deipnosophistae.
