Condition NGVF (edge bruise above and below surname. Naming unaffected) Francis Ignatius Carvill was born at Haverstock Hill on April 18th 1871. He joined the Royal Navy as a Midshipman in 1886. He was docked three months' pay by in August 1889 by Captain Warren for failing to return to HMS Constant after his leave had expired. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1893. In 1896 he was up at court on a charge of being drunk and disorderly at Portsmouth Magistrate Court. This effectively ended the first part of his Naval career, and he retired in 1903. In 1911 he resumed service as a Commander. He was recommended for an O.B.E ' Successfully breached 'War Knight' at very great risk to his life. The vessel was on fire and expected to blow up at any minute when he boarded her'. It seems the award was granted, possibly due to his earlier service history. SS War Knight was a cargo ship that collided with US Steamer O.B. Jennings. Carvill saved the ship; however, she later struck a German mine while being refloated.Commander Carvill retired in 1919. He sadly committed suicide on January 14th 1927. He shot himself in the head with a revolver, and his body was found on the train at Euston Station. His service papers note 'Did kill himself, unsound mind'.
