c.1958 Greeves 197cc 20TA Scottish TrialsRegistration no. not registered (see text)Frame no. 9027/TAEngine no. 071B53965Greeves' unorthodox trademarks of a cast beam 'downtube' and rubber-in-torsion leading-link fork proved adaptable to almost all forms of motorcycle from humble commuter to clubman's road-racer, but it was the firm's off-road products that really put it on the map. The off-road range was extensively revised for 1958, gaining new frames with increased ground clearance together with a narrower rear sub-frame and swinging arm. Villiers' 197cc 9E sports engine was used for both the Scottish trials and Hawkstone scrambler, suitably modified to suit the particular application. The name 'Scottish' had been adopted following Jack Simpson's victory in the Scottish Six Days Trial's 200cc category in 1957. The Scottish offered here is fitted with the earlier 8E engine unit, the '071B' prefix identifying it as having been supplied to Francis-Barnett. It should also be noted that the registration '660 FPF' has lapsed and is no longer associated with this motorcycle. Offered with an old-style continuation logbook (issued 1974).Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 688

1976 Ossa 244cc MAR Trials MotorcycleRegistration no. UNM 335RFrame no. B333411Engine no. M333411In a bid to emulate local rivals Bultaco and Montesa's off-road competition successes, Ossa hired English trials star Mick Andrews in 1967. Then only 23 but already a proven winner, Andrews set about developing Ossa's existing trail bike into a competitive trials mount, a process that culminated in the MAR (Mick Andrews Replica), which carried its creator to consecutive European Trials Championships in 1971 and '72. The MAR put Ossa on the trials map with a vengeance and proved so successful that it remained in production until the late 1970s. The vendor advises us that this MAR had been run four times in the last year on open roads and twice off-road on local byways, the last occasion being in November 2020. The exhaust mid-section has been replaced and the vendor describes the machine as in generally good condition. Offered with a V5C and MoT (expiring 22nd March 2021).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 94

Property of a deceased's estate 1981 Laverda 981cc Jota '120'Registration no. AGT 772WFrame no. LAV1000/3CL 8469Engine no. 1000 8469Blessed with one of the most evocative names in motorcycling history, the Jota was the bike that really put Laverda on the map. Its direct progenitor was the tuned version of the Italian firm's 3C triple - the 3C(E) - developed for production racing by the UK importer, Slater Brothers. The production Jota was both more highly tuned and quicker, its 140mph top speed making it the world's fastest road-going production motorcycle at the time of its launch for 1976. It was also pretty handy on the racetrack, winning the UK's Avon championship in 1976 and 1978 in the hands of Pete Davies. Few major changes were made to the Jota prior to 1982 when a heavily revised version was introduced, complete with a 120-degree crankshaft that made for a more even firing order. This Jota '120' was purchased by its late owner in 2005 (bill of sale on file). An older restoration, the machine displays a total of 35,216 kilometres on the odometer and appears in nice condition. Last MoT'd in 2007, it will require re-commissioning before returning to the road. The history file contains correspondence; photocopies of marque-related literature; technical notes and diagrams; SORN paperwork; pre-restoration photographs; sundry invoices; expired MoTs; original handbook and workshop manual; a V5C; and a Laverda Owners Club 'Highly Commended' rosette from 2006. Currently detached the Jota also includes the front headlight fairing. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

WORLD WAR IPapers of Captain Duncan Warrand (1877-1946) of the 2nd Seaforth Highlanders, comprising:i) Series of some 72 letters and 8 postcards from Duncan Warrand, the majority to his sister Carrie ('Dearest C', 'D.C.'), three to his brother Redmond ('Dear Redmond'), long, detailed letters written from the trenches and latterly from his billet in Rouen, including one seven-page letter written on Christmas Day 1914, describing the famous truce ('...Later on Wednesday night there was much shouting and singing in the German lines... Last night no sniping took place... The Germans lit fires and just sang on. So some of our sergeants and men went up to their lines returning with boxes of cigars! They have no drink... The officer who spoke to our Sgt was an American German, recalled in the war, who was heartily sick of it. He said they would not fire today... it may be partly due to the thick mist which was surely sent by Providence to give us a peaceful Xmas... Our opponents are Saxons and Bavarians and have so far proved themselves gentlemen. About 11 o'clock this morning I went outside the lines and we were all busy mending wire entanglements... We were right out in the field and could see the Germans walking about just as we were... And how lovely it was this morning! The star in the East so bright & clear... picked a bit of ivy... off a tree to commemorate this extraordinary Xmas of peace in war... At this point Sgt Smith looked in to say that a large number of Germans were walking about on our left and talking freely with our men and what was to be done... Tall men in grey coats fraternising with the men... what Bishops & Clergy could not do, the troops have done for themselves...'); other letters much concerned with asking for supplies ('...Please send me a box of cigarettes as the ones here are 'orrid... 'Bromo'!... some soup tablets for dissolving in hot water... shirts, khaki hosetops, cardigans... safety matches... shortbread, plum pudding etc... everything to be packed in oiled canvas... candles are difficult to come by... Colgate toothpaste... I wonder if mince pies would travel in a tin box?... a bottle of Worcester Sauce...'); reporting on troop movements as far as the censor allows ('...seems no harm in saying we are now in Belgium and not far from (2 miles south) of Messines...') and on 18 December 1914 includes a drawing of their position ('...without mentioning any names...'); with vivid descriptions of the horrors of war ('...continued action throughout the night... The trenches are awful, knee deep in mud... higher up the road there is destruction on all sides, houses in ruin, large shell holes and broken trees... I saw a hand and arm today just outside, who knows what unfortunate man it belonged to...'); the constant threat of being fired upon ('...planted shells all around us... They made a horrid whizzy noise when they really mean business... One falling bullet just grazed my ear yesterday...'); conditions in the trenches ('...It has rained incessantly... the trenches are ghastly... this place is called 'The Piggeries'... we are nearly all crawling – it's disgusting but a fact...'); news of mutual friends ('...I hear Patrick Grant was shot in the jaw...'), family news and talk of home ('...I wish the dogs could come out here...'), suggesting '...you might keep these rotten letters... my collection of letters to you are the best diary I can keep...'; the majority with envelopes, c.230pp., dust-staining, some small tears and other signs of wear, mostly 8vo (210 x 134mm.), 2nd Seaforth Highlanders, British Expeditionary Force, Grand Hôtel de la Poste, Rouen, 6 January 1914 to 20 January 1917 ii) Five pocket diaries 1914-1918, containing intermittent entries in pen and ink on the weather and various engagements, accounts and other notes (2 April 1917 noting 'Brigadeer General F.J. de Gex Base Cdnt has died suddenly of heart failure while sitting in the lounge after lunch at the Hotel des Postes. A very good man.'; 26 March 1918 'The great German attack causes anxiety'; 11 November 1918 'Guns fired to announce armistice signed. Crowds begin at once... have to walk through Trafalgar Square. Pouring rain. Cheerful crowds...'), calf, worn, four c.150 x 95mm., one 100 x 70mm.; with another notebook including lists and brief entries for 11 August to 18 November 1914 regarding training, drills etc. iii) Various papers including: hand drawn and annotated map of the trenches south of the river Douve, depicting troop positions, annotated 'Issued in Trenches/ 1914. DW', purple, red and blue pencil, 200 x 320mm.; carbon copy of 'Standing Order re Trenches', 5 pages, lined paper torn from notebook, 8vo (196 x 145mm.), dated 23 January 1915; with various ephemera such as photographs including one of his sister Carrie, mimeographed concert programmes 1917-18, trench whistle engraved with Aldershot Stores/Aldershot/Patent on original? cord; two printed folding maps, linen backed, one of Belgium, depicting the area around Ypres, the other of St Yves with trench positions marked as of 14 November 1915, (440 x 575mm.), in an envelope annotated 'This is not the map I had in the trenches, but shows very clearly the position we held at Seaforth Farm', etc.Footnotes:'THIS EXTRAORDINARY XMAS OF PEACE IN WAR'.The men of the 2nd Seaforth Highlanders were engaged in several important actions on the Western Front including the Battle of Messines in 1914, the second Battle of Ypres in 1915 and Passchendaele in 1917. These letters illustrate one soldier's experience in the trenches during 1914 into 1915 including the famous Christmas Truce of that year. They paint an evocative picture: '...On Wednesday we were shelled by 'Little Willie', a most elusive and persistent piece of small artillery... Then they sent about 25 large howitzer shells right over... a big hole in the ground about the size of a large dog basket... They are at it now, like continuous thunderclaps... The officers and men's dugouts are just little caves made into the sides of the trenches about 6ft by 5ft... The floor is covered in deep straw... One can see the Germans now and again moving about in their trenches at dawn and dusk. They snipe us and we snipe them... I have not changed my socks since Tuesday or had my shirt off... I hope they may run short of shells soon... When this poor country will recover goodness knows... I feel like a rabbit going to ground by day and walking about at night... Yesterday (17th) we were ordered to fire at the trenches ahead... By afternoon their guns replied... The noise was deafening... We lost only 3 men, all by rifle fire... I was plastered in mud from head to foot... We are standing by...'.Warrand returned to Rouen in the spring of 1915 to take up the duties of a staff officer, billeted in the Grand Hôtel de la Poste and later with a French widow and her family. Part of his duties involved sorting out the personal effects of those killed in action – in one of his final letters he reflects '...I often wonder if anything matters: foolish young souls pass through here full of spirits & then their belongings come back a few days afterwards – white label with blue stripe & that means they have done with life here...'. This collection has been retained in the family until now.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Five: Captain R. B. Howick, Machine Gun Battalion, The Jat Regiment, Indian Army 1939-45 Star; Burma Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, S.E. Asia 1945-46 (Capt. R. B. Howick. 9 Jat. R.) good very fine (5) £100-£140 --- Robert Bernard Howick was born on 17 March 1923 and was commissioned in the Jat Regiment on 15 November 1942. Promoted Lieutenant on 15 May 1943, he served during the Second World War with the 7th Battalion and then the Machine Gun Battalion of his regiment in Burma. The Machine Gun Battalion saw extensive and arduous active service from Imphal to the Sittang River, 1944-1945. Companies of the battalion nearly always operated independently in support of various forces. From joining the unit in 1944 Howick served as the only company officer of “W” Company and eventually, from May 1945, as company commander. After Burma the battalion saw further service in French Indo-China, qualifying for the General Service with clasp South-East Asia 1945-46. ‘MG Jat’ was organised as four MG Companies (W, X, Y, and Z), each with an establishment of twelve guns, and was the MG Battalion of the 20th Indian Division. The following notes on Howick’s active service in Burma are extracted from the battalion history published at Bangalore in July 1947: Capture of Monywa ‘From Maukkadaw one platoon of W Company under Lieutenant Howick left to join 100 Infantry Brigade where they received orders to form part of a strong mobile column which was to move as rapidly as possible through Budalin to occupy Monywa… The force duly left on the 4th January [1945], but on approaching Budalin found 32 Infantry Brigade in contact with the enemy who contrary to expectations were making a stubborn stand, in well dug in positions inside the village. The platoon then came under command of 32 Brigade, subsequently being joined by the remainder of W Company which remained with the Brigade right through the Burma operations... Monywa was the Division’s first large prize so far, and had been an important base for the Japs this side of the Irrawaddy… W Company under Major Davies and Lieutenant Howick played their share in its recapture.’ The Irrawaddy Crossing During the battle of the Irrawaddy shore W Company supported 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment in a desperate action ‘One battalion of 32 Brigade [1 Northamptonshires] had been given the task of making a diversionary landing from Myaung to the South of the main crossing. No. 3 platoon were to cross with the assaulting troops to assist consolidation, while No. 2 platoon gave supporting fire from a sandbank in mid river. The landing was effected according to plan on the 13 February and that night Major Davies, and Lieutenant Howick with Company H.Q. and the remaining platoon crossed to join the platoon with the Northants on the bridgehead... The Japanese reacted strongly to this surprise landing, and launched counter attacks, one after the other mainly at night, all of which were repulsed, assisted by our M.G. fire which took heavy toll of the enemy and won many tributes from the men of the Northants. The bridghead was only 800 yards by 300 yards in very soft sand, and no cover of any description, but in spite of these conditions and merciless enemy Artillery fire day and night the morale of the men remained magnificently high… By the end of the month the bridghead was still firmly holding out… We left W Company entrenched with the Northants on their small bridgehead across the Irrawaddy. Not a day or night passed without incident, and the machine guns were constantly in action, beating off enemy attacks, dealing with jitter parties, map shoots and harassing shoots. Enemy artillery continued to pour shells down on to this relatively small and completely exposed area, making any movement by day a very hazardous procedure, and one not indulged in lightly. With the remainder of the Brigade across the river… the by now completely isolated party had completed its task… Thus ended a very trying period of 25 days, spent in exposed positions, subject to constant attacks, and continual shelling, added to which was blazing heat and myriads of flies… many individual acts of gallantry were performed, and the Company with Major Davies and Lieutenant Howick can truly say they had done a difficult job well… A most appreciative signal was received at Battalion H.Q. from the C.O. of the Northants, thanking W Company for the very excellent support they had rendered, and for the magnificent manner in which they had carried it out.’ Final Advance in Burma 32 Brigade now advanced across country to cut the Mandalay road, and ‘Mopping up of nearby parties of enemy was carried out with machine gun support whenever required… Lieutenant Howick was with the company throughout as Company Officer and frequently out with detached platoons.’ These operations continued until the end of March followed by a rest period from 1-9 April. 32 Brigade, with W Company, still attached, then formed a mechanised column to act as spearhead of the next advance, to Taundingwi, which was accomplished in six days. The history continues: ‘From the 23 to the 27 April, one platoon under Lieutenant Howick with guns and ammunition on bullock carts moved South with the 4/2nd Gurkha Rifles, and by the end of the month the Company had concentrated North of Allanmyo on the Rangoon Road... W Company continued with 32 Brigade and reached Tharrawaddy in May. Major Davies had left the company at Tharrawaddy to proceed on leave in India, leaving Lieutenant Howick in charge. While in India orders came through sanctioning Major Davies his home leave in lieu of repatriation, and that was the last we saw of him for about six months.’ Presumably Captain Howick remained in charge of W Company for the remainder of the campaign in Burma and the move to Saigon in French Indo-China, where the task of disarming and rounding up 72,000 Japanese was hampered by a state of near civil war and considerable unrest. The Battalion was still on active service and in action with rebels on a number of occasions. There were casualties and several awards for gallantry were earned during this period. Around October 1945 Howick went on leave to India and was away for several months but must have returned before the Battalion was disbanded in India in August 1946 as he appears in the group photograph of officers present on disbandment.
