SILENT RUNNING (1972) - Douglas Trumbull Collection: Hand-Drawn and Printed Robot Artwork - Hand-drawn and printed robot artwork from Douglas Trumbull's Silent Running. After plant life became extinct and preserved on eight greenhouse space domes, Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) took his dome to the rings of Saturn after orders were sent for the domes to be destroyed. This lot comes from the collection of the director and special photographic effects artist Douglas Trumbull. The robots from Silent Running were inducted into the Robot Hall of Fame the same year as the T-800 Terminator, and were known to be George Lucas' direct inspiration for the R2D2 droid in Star Wars. Created by Doug Trumbull, Don Trumbull, Paul Kraus, and James Dow, this lot consists of 13 hand-drawn robot designs rendered on white paper and tracing paper in graphite and ink; one printed page of model views with hand-illustrations; and seven printed robot concept designs. This lot exhibits discoloration, as well as torn edges on the tracing paper. Dimensions: (largest) 9" x 12.5" (23 cm x 31.75 cm)Sold without copyright; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull was born in Los Angeles in 1942. After abandoning architecture for technical drawing and cartooning, his talent for photorealism soon earned him work at Graphic Films, an esteemed Hollywood studio for which he designed groundbreaking cosmic effects for the 1964 New York World's Fair. After seeing Trumbull's work, director Stanley Kubrick hired him to create animations and VFX shots - including the iconic Star Gate sequence - for what would become his seminal masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. From that film's success, Trumbull became one of the industry's most trusted photographic effects experts, designing and producing legendary screen moments in such sci-fi landmarks as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Blade Runner, all three of which earned him Academy Award® nominations. In addition to directing the cult classics Silent Running and Brainstorm, Trumbull later received a Scientific and Engineering Award for his high-speed photography process Showscan in 1993, one of two specialty awards given to him by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences before his death in 2022. 60 years since he first made his mark on global cinema, Propstore today celebrates Douglas Trumbull by presenting a selection of rare memorabilia from his personal collection to the public.Estimate: $3,000 - 6,000Bidding for this lot will end on Thursday, August 15th. THE BLACK HOLE (1979) - V.I.N.Cent (Roddy McDowall) Model Miniature - A V.I.N.Cent (Roddy McDowall) model miniature from Gary Nelson's The Black Hole. V.I.N.Cent, which stands for "Vital Information Necessary CENTralized," was designed by Disney Imagineer George McGinnis and voiced by McDowall in an uncredited role. V.I.N.Cent served as a utility robot on the USS Palomino, and befriended a similar robot called B.O.B. (voiced by Slim Pickens, also uncredited) after boarding the USS Cygnus. This model miniature, carefully crafted to resemble the full-scale model, is made of fiberglass and hand-painted red, gray, cream, and black. It features a barrel-shaped torso, static retracted arm and leg appendages, a spherical head, and a flat headpiece. There are four lateral holes across the back, and the robot's familiar square-shaped eyes are painted on the head. Technical data is written across faux panels on the torso, and the name "V.I.N.CENT L.F.396" is stenciled in red on the front and back. ROBOT JOX (1989) - Achilles (Gary Graham) and Athena's (Anne-Marie Johnson) Screen-Matched Hero Mechanical Robot Puppet - Achilles (Gary Graham) and Athena's (Anne-Marie Johnson) screen-matched hero mechanical robot puppet from Stuart Gordon's Robot Jox. This puppet screen-matches to close-up shots from the climactic battle scene in which market robot jox Achilles and Athena fought against Alexander (Paul Koslo) of the Confederation. The film's colossal mechs, designed by conceptual designers Ron Cobb and Steve Burg in coordination with Gordon, were brought to life through a combination of stop-motion animation used for the wider shots and rod-and-cable puppets used for close-up shots of the robots in action. This hero robot is of the latter type. This puppet is constructed from resin-coated fiberglass with a metal armature interior and mechanical metal cables for operating the puppet extending out its back. It is painted red and white as the robot appeared later in the film, rather than its more fully red appearance in early scenes.Following production, this puppet underwent sympathetic restoration to secure various loose components and remount its legs. EX MACHINA (2014) - Ava's (Alicia Vikander) Screen-Matched Final Costume - Ava's (Alicia Vikander) screen-matched final costume from Alex Garland's Ex Machina. Inconsistencies in the stitching of this costume screen-match to when Ava, having dispatched her creator, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), and trapped his employee, Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), raided old robot pieces from Nathan's cupboards and escaped into the outside world in the climactic finale sequence.Often considered among the greatest films of the 2010s, Ex Machina received particular acclaim for Vikander's performance as the frighteningly, if artificially, intelligent Ava. She and the film received a litany of awards, including a BAFTA® nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and an Academy Award® nomination for Garland's disturbing screenplay. This costume consists of a white collared peplum Karen Millen blouse with cap sleeves, an elasticized waistband, and a hook-and-loop closure (U.S. Size 2), as well as a matching Karen Millen pencil skirt (U.S. Size 6), both made from cotton with crocheted floral patterns and yellow polyester underlining. The back of the top features a thin cotton panel as well as a metal loop closure on the collar. The costume exhibits some crinkling from wear around the collar and minor discoloration from production wear.Estimate: $6,000 - 12,000Bidding for this lot will end on Thursday, August 15th. The auction will begin at 9:30AM PDT and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. It is painted black with yellow stripes and chrome-color details on its body to appear metallic. STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Pair of Hand-Drawn Ralph McQuarrie C-3PO Leg and Torso Concept Sketches - Two C-3PO leg and torso concept sketches hand-drawn by production illustrator Ralph McQuarrie for George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. Loyal protocol droid C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) accompanied Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on his quest to rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) from the clutches of the Empire. McQuarrie, who is credited alongside Lucas for the origins of Threepio, originally based the look of the droid on the robot Maria from Fritz Lang's classic Metropolis, although the character ultimately seen on screen was both more masculine and less human-looking in the style of Gort from Robert Wise's The Day the Earth Stood Still. These early sketches, one depicting C-3PO's jointed legs in slight profile and one depicting his torso and bottom from the left side, were rendered in graphite on paper circa mid-1975. The profile sketch also appears on page 27 of the Abrams publication Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie, while the torso sketch appears on page 82. Both appear to have been torn from a larger sheet of paper and exhibit crinkling. Dimensions: (largest) 6" x 17" (15.25 cm x 43.25 cm)Estimate: $3,000 - 6,000Bidding for this lot will end on Sunday, August 18th.
