A full-size Chappie robot from Neill Blomkamp's dystopian sci-fi film Chappie. Previously known as Robot 22, Chappie (Sharlto Copley) was a law enforcement robot created by Tetravaal Tactical Robotics, Ltd. Severely damaged during an encounter with rival gangs, the robot was fitted with a prototype programme by engineer Deon Wilson (Dev Patel), granting it consciousness, and was kidnapped soon after by a group of gangsters led by Ninja (Ninja). Actor Sharlto Copley performed with the rest of the cast in a grey motion-capture suit and was digitally replaced by the visual effects team using CGI.Created by New Zealand's Weta Workshop, this display comprises a selection of production-made components from different versions of the robot. 216 - - Charlie Stein. Pink Kong. 2019. Öl auf Leinwand. 120 x 100 cm. Verso signiert, datiert. In "Pink Kong", Charlie Stein exercises modes of dehumanization and objectification, juxtaposing these with the visual language of popular culture. Referred to a series referencing Japanese TV monsters. Kong - the Chinese term for fear - reflects on the cultural tension between China and Japan. Depicted in pink monochrome, other antagonistic forces are suggested, in the strength-displaying imagery of a metal robot, and the traditional feminine palette. The tension between old and new, masculine and feminine, invites us to resolve the image towards one or the other - or to allow it to remain in an in-between state.
