Clothing.- Vaughan (Walter) An Essay, Philosophical and Medical, concerning Modern Clothing, first edition, lacking half-title but with errata leaf at end of preliminaries, a few leaves a little browned at edges, modern half calf, spine gilt, 8vo, Rochester, W.Gillman, 1792.⁂ Scarce work by a physician on the perils of contemporary clothing. ESTC lists only 6 copies in the UK: BL (2 copies), Cambridge University Library, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (but apparently sold in 2014), John Rylands Library, and the Wellcome Institute.
English School (19th Century) - Watercolour - HMS Spartan, unsigned, 34.5cm x 52.5cm, within a gilt frame. HMS Spartan launched at Rochester in 1806 as a 38 gun 5th rate frigate, during the Napoleonic Wars she saw action in the Ionian Islands and the Adriatic before moving to the American coast during the war of 1812, returning to the Mediterranean and then broken up in 1822. (offered with Omell Gallery insurance valuation which states that the reverse of the watercolour is inscribed 'Spartan - Frigate - 1816') Condition: Good strong crisp colours, there is one noticeable foxing dot located in the rigging above the bow of the main ship - **General condition consistent with age

DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. A.L.S., Charles Dickens, one page, 8vo, Gads Hill Place, Higham by Rochester, Kent, 28th April 1863, to William Woodall. Dickens announces 'I do not remember to have received any such communication from you as you describe in your letter…..' and continues to add that the letter may have gone to his London office and been set aside by mistake 'in the great accumulation of correspondence there'. Dickens further adds 'It is with regret that I convey to you the assurance of my inability to comply with the request of the Wedgwood Memorial Committee. But I have lately done all that I can reasonably afford to do…..'. With integral leaf bearing a contemporary docket, presumably in the hand of Woodall, noting that Dickens was 'unable to read gratuitously'. Some very light, extremely minor age toning and light wear, VG £800-1200 William Woodall (1832-1901) British Politician & Philanthropist, a supporter of Women's Suffrage. Woodall served as secretary of the Wedgwood Institute committee. The present letter is not included in The Letters of Charles Dickens (Vol. III 1836-70, published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1882).

GEORGE WARD (fl.1885-1925) PONTE VECCHIO, FLORENCE signed & dated l.r. 1923 oil on board 27.5 x 34.0cm / 10 3/4 x 13 1//4in George Ward was Principal of the Rochester School of Art between 1885 and 1925. He was a travelling scholar of the Royal College of Art before that and spent his scholarship year in Italy.

A Late Victorian, Brass-Bound, Leather Shotgun Case, labelled to the lid underside for William Rochester Pape, red baise lining to interior, fitted for 28 in barrels, containing a webbing and leather cartridge belt and a cleaning rod (a/f). Generally sound condition. Lid very slightly warped. Slight damages to stitching. One strap lacking. Internally with slight mould and with areas of wear to baise.

Lee, Nathaniel The Rival Queens or the Death of Alexander the Great. J. Magnes and R. Bentley, 1677. 8vo, paper wrappers; pp. [8 (title page defective, lacking one page of Epistle Dedicatory)], 64 [66, two leaves numbered 25-26], [2 (Epilogue)]; provenance: small ink stamp of Penzance Library on Epistle Dedicatory page, ink MSS note on ffep states it was purchased from ''John Kinsman, Penzance'' in 1879. First edition. With a dedicatory verse to Lee by Dryden and prologue written by Sir Charles Scroop. Lee was a dramatist, possibly under the patronage of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham. This blank verse tragedy about Roxana's jealousy for Statira made Lee's reputation. His success was matched by excess - much in the company of the infamous Rochester - and he died of a drunken fit before his 40th birthday. He spent time in Bedlam, summing up his situation as follows: ''They called me mad, and I called them mad, and damn them, they outvoted me.''Loss to title page, one page of Epistle Dedicatory lacking, page corners folded, pages toned and occasionally spotted.
