The GMT-Master was made as a collaborative watch with Pan American World Airways. At the beginning of the jet set age for pilots giving a clear and quick dual time configuration ideal for intercontinental travel. This particular Ref 6542 was made in the last quarter of 1955 a year after the model's introduction in 1954 and has the GMT-Master printed in Red. This dial survival is exceptionally rare making a subtle echo of the red in the Bakelite bezel creating a harmony not present on other versions. The calendar ring is a roulette meaning that it alternates between black and red print, a particular feature of Rolex Date watches from this era. The survival of the Bakelite bezel is a testament to the watches low usage during its life as these bezels were particularly brittle and prone to damage. Also they were recalled by Rolex due to the Radium present in the numerals. This meant any time the watch was returned to Rolex they would change the bezel for a modern alternative aluminium insert. This watch case is in very good condition making this a prize for any connoisseur of the classic GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

This was where finely lacquered dials were fitted to Day-Dates in a diverse range of bright and unusual colours such as the current attractive bold 'lobster red' example. These dials went through a period of not being particularly fashionable leading to many being swapped for more mainstay dials over the years. Recently they have experienced a revival in interest and their subsequent rarity makes them now very desirable for collectors. The current lot is offered on behalf of the family of the original owner. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
