Rolex is a Swiss luxury watchmaker that is widely recognized for its prestigious and high-quality timepieces. Founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, Rolex has become one of the most iconic and sought-after watch brands globally. Here are key features and details about Rolex:1. **Founding and Early Years:** Rolex was originally founded in London, but due to post-World War I taxes and import duties, Wilsdorf and Davis moved the company to Geneva, Switzerland, in 1919. The move allowed them to take advantage of Switzerland's strong watchmaking tradition.2. **Innovations:** Rolex has been a pioneer in the watchmaking industry, introducing several key innovations. Notable advancements include the first waterproof wristwatch, the Rolex Oyster, introduced in 1926, and the self-winding Perpetual rotor in 1931.3. **Oyster Case:** The Rolex Oyster case was a groundbreaking development in watch design, featuring a hermetically sealed case that protected the movement from dust and water. This innovation contributed to the Oyster's durability and water resistance.4. **Perpetual Rotor:** The Rolex Perpetual rotor, introduced in 1931, was a self-winding mechanism powered by the motion of the wearer's wrist. This innovation eliminated the need for manual winding and enhanced the convenience of automatic watches.5. **Rolex Models:** Rolex offers a range of watch models, each catering to different purposes and lifestyles. Some of the most iconic models include the Rolex Submariner, Rolex Daytona, Rolex Datejust, Rolex GMT-Master, and Rolex Day-Date.6. **Materials:** Rolex is known for its use of high-quality materials in its watches. The brand commonly uses 904L stainless steel, precious metals such as gold and platinum, and proprietary materials like Rolesor (a combination of steel and gold).7. **COSC Certification:** Rolex movements are certified by the Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (COSC), ensuring high accuracy and precision. Rolex movements often exceed the COSC standards.8. **Cerachrom Bezels:** Rolex introduced Cerachrom ceramic bezels to its watches, known for their resistance to scratches, corrosion, and fading. The Cerachrom bezels are used in various Rolex models, such as the Submariner and GMT-Master.9. **Rolex Crowns:** The crown logo, commonly known as the Rolex Crown, is a symbol of the brand's excellence and prestige. It is featured on the winding crown of Rolex watches.10. **Collectibility and Resale Value:** Rolex watches are highly sought after by collectors, and certain models have become investment pieces with significant resale value. Limited editions, vintage models, and iconic references often command premium prices in the secondary market.11. **Rolex in Pop Culture:** Rolex watches have made appearances in popular culture and have been associated with influential figures, celebrities, and fictional characters, further contributing to the brand's status.Rolex's commitment to precision, innovation, and enduring design has solidified its reputation as a symbol of luxury and craftsmanship in the world of horology. The brand's watches are not only timekeeping instruments but also enduring symbols of status and achievement.18.8 x 9.0.Metal.

Note from the vendor: This Rolex GMT Master is being sold by the family of the original purchaser. Our father bought the watch in the port city of Aden whilst serving on the Royal Navy commando ship HMS Albion during the time of the Aden Emergency in 1965. He was then a young man of 22 years. South Yemen was still at this point (1965) under British law until 1967 when the last troops pulled out. He owned and wore this watch for around 50 years until he latterly became too frail to wear it. It has been around the world several times and has had many adventures as he was a dedicated traveller and seaman both during his time in the Royal Navy and in his later years as a civilian. It has been well looked after and regularly serviced by Rolex engineers and comes with the original manufacturer certificate, guarantee and receipt of sale papers. We hope that the next owner enjoys it for both its historical and appreciative value.
