L'armée persane est commandée par Shah Ismaïl vêtu d'une côte de maille. La profusion de détails tant au niveau de l'armement que de l'harnachement des chevaux témoigne d'un soucis réaliste. 20.5 x 33 cm A pair of Qajar lacquered flaps, Iran, circa 1880 Each of rectangular form with a detailed depiction of the battle of Chaldiran, Shah Ismaïl identified with small inscriptions in white nasta'liq. Inscriptions : Sardar-e Rum : Officier des Rums (Ottomans) Shah Ismaïl Gholâm Inspirés des fresques de la salle de banquet du palais de Tchehel Sotun à Isfahan, ces plats célèbrent la bravoure des souverains de la dynastie safavide. Ici, c'est la bataille de Tchaldiran qui est représentée, qui vit la défaite du fondateur de la dynastie safavide, Shâh Ismaïl I (r.1501-1524) , face aux Ottomans de Sélim Ier (r.1512-1521) équipés de canon. Le sujet de ces plats laissent à penser qu'ils étaient destinés à un Shahnameh, Livre des rois, contant l'épopée mythique de la Perse.Provenance : Vente publique, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, dans les années 1960-65. Emil Adam (German, 1843-1924) MANIFESTO, circa 1899, engraving of the dual Grand National winner, George Williamson up, depicted with a racecourse background, signed by the artist in pencil lower right, mounted, framed and glazed, 86 by 97cm. overall, fair condition, water damage to mount and possibly to engraving underneath Manifesto, viewed as the Red Rum of the late 19th century, ran in a record eight Grand Nationals, winning twice in 1897 and 1899, finishing third on three occasions and fourth once. Irish bred and foaled in 1888, he ran in his final Grand National at the age of 16.

Writing to his sister he asks for news from home and says 'you wished for some small token from Sebastopol but I had nothing but a Russian musket and bayonet and those I sold to one of our officers as I have no means of sending it to England...things are very dear 1lb of bread here is 1/6, meat we cannot buy for any price, we give 2 shillings for a bottle of porter or ale and we are only getting half allowance of rum to what we used to get, and there it is a great deal of gambling amongst the troops'.Four sides, cross-written on final page, edge tears.
