*THOMAS DELLERT DELACROIX (Swedish, b.1953)DEATH OF TROTSKY Carpet, woven in China, woven signature 'T Dellert 83', 1983size 200 x 138cmThomas Dellert-Delacroix is a Swedish conceptual artist known for his paintings, short films and ready-made works, whose prolific practice is both unique and beguiling. Dellert-Delacroix's diverse array of works display a fascination with the history of the twentieth century. This wall hanging is no exception; originating from a series of pieces focusing on the USSR, Dellert-Delacroix fuses Russian iconography with traditional rug-weaving techniques to create an arresting piece of conceptual art designed to be displayed and admired. Woven in China, at 160 stitches per square inch, this technique is almost impossible to replicate today. In Dellert-Delacroix's own words, 'being an artist...is to survive the no-man's land where art swings between the cruel madness of reality, and the beauty and serenity of our dreams.'. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.

(sm.qty.) ⁂ The magazine established in the immediate aftermath of the Russian Revolution; dedicated to educating members of the working-class, even - in the distinctly Soviet way - to informing the creation of characteristically proletarian new art forms. The movement for proletkult (for an art to depict, serve, and inform working-class life and culture) had begun in independent artists' associations prior to the Revolution; its co-option and haphazard organization under Soviet central control caused divisions; by the early 1920s the federation of associations in Russia had formally been dissolved; in 1921 the newly-formed Communist Party of Czechoslovakia set up a Czech federation and launched an edition of the magazine in Prague.

ELENA LUKSCH -MAKOWSKY (RUSSIAN 1878-1967) Volga Barge-Haulers, 1922 charcoal and gouache on paper 24 x 53.5 cm (9 1/2 x 23 in.) [sight] signed and dated 'Elena Luksch-Makowsky 1922' lower right PROVENANCESotheby's, May 20, 2005, lot 24 LOT NOTESElena Luksch-Makowsky was a daughter of the famous Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky and a sister of prominent writer and art critic Sergei Makovsky. She studied under Ilya Repin and participated in Repin-organized exhibition in 1896 - 1897. In 1902 Makowsky married the Austrian sculptor Richard Luksch and moved first to Vienna and then to Hamburg where she took the German citizenship and taught at the Industrial Art School. She exhibited in Russia with "World of Arts", with "Garland" and at the Salon of Sergei Makovsky. Elena was the first woman to exhibit at the Viennese "Secession" in Austria and participated in multiple exhibitions in Germany, Hamburg. During the 1920s and 1930s she regularly exhibited at the Parisian Salons. This drawing was done for the notable Cabaret theatre "Blue Bird" (Der Blaue Vogel), founded in Berlin by the actor Yasha Yuzhny in 1920. Many famous Russian artists were doing costume and stage designs for this theatre, including George Pogedaieff, Ossip Lubitch, Jean Pougny and Pavel Tchelitchew. The production of ÒBurlakiÓ( Volga Barge Haulers) went on a European tour in 1923, reaching London`s Scala Theatre in October. It was reviewed in several newspapers: ÒÉThe Volga Boat Song, like a page torn from Gorky, is a cry from the depths. Only an artist with a strong sense of humanity and pity could have conceived those seven outcasts in their rags straining at a barge rope against a sunset skyÉ . As music supplies the basis of these 'dramatizations,' surely it ought to be treated less as an intruder in the theater and more as an honored guest." (The Christian Science Monitor, October 27, 1923)

The subjects of his frank and often graphic paintings are situated in transitional spaces: the street, the village, the public restroom, and, most obviously, the verges of society. Simultaneously, the artists' works, imbued with a Bacchanalian facetiousness, are equal parts inflammatory social commentary and light hearted gag joke. Shulzhenko's men and women are conventionally unattractive, their bodies and faces as frequently distorted by alcoholism and anger as they are by lust and laughter. Heavily featuring the grotesque, the artist knowingly adopts, comments on and subverts conventional artistic narratives.
