Thomas Gammage & Sons, late James McCabe, London - an 18ct gold half hunter keyless wind pocket watch, London 1931, the two part white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds dial, the movement signed Thos. Gammage & Son, St. Michaels Alley, Cornhill, , numbered 44,869, from the late Jas McCabe, Royal Exchange, London, diameter 48 mm. Thomas Gammage (I) worked for James McCabe & Sons. James McCabe (1748-1811) was originally from Lurgan, Ireland and relocated to London during the last quarter of the 18th century. He was well known for his fine watches and clocks with many of them being exported to India. He had four sons who carried on the business after his death in 1811, the business closing in the 1880'S. During the 19th century the McCabe family were to become one of the most famous Clockmaking families of this period. Among notable owners of McCabes was Lord Horatio Nelson, and the first President of the United States - George Washington who purchased his McCabe pocket watch in Philadelphia in 1793.
