Lot 2173

(calibre 1530) lever movement signed, original black glossy dial with radium luminous Arabic, dagger and baton markers, gilt writing and underlined below Super Precision, Mercedes hands, screw down crown, screw back signed inside with maker's mark Montres Rolex SA Geneva Switzerland, numbered 1002 and dated IV63, case serial number 977432, Rolex stainless steel oyster bracelet with a deployant clasp, one link stamped 7835/19 and end links stamped 35733mm wideIn the early 1960's Rolex produced a small number of this reference 5500 with Explorer dials and they are almost indistinguishable from the classic Explorer Reference 1016. Instead of "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" the dials would spell out "Precision" or "Super Precision" above the 6 o'clock position. This example is a very rare variation of the Explorer dial with striking features. The dial has the original lacquered black glossy dial and gilt finished writing, but the main feature which collectors love to see is the Underline beneath the Super Precision. Case and barcelet with surface scratches, case with very minor dents to the side and bezel, bracelet links are slightly stretched, bracelet clasp with Rolex emblem slightly rubbed, bracelet would probably date circa 1970 and has been placed onto this watch when serviced. Plexi glass with small scratches and one minor chip to the top edge at 12 visible under an eyeglass, original dial finish is in good condition, luminous hour markers have a great patina and aged well, gilt writing is very clear, dial surface with very minor spotting marks when tilting the dial towards the light, service replacement hands, crown is screwing down correctly on the threaded tube, hand setting correctly, movement in going order.

Lot 2180

manual wound lever movement signed and numbered 376274, split bimetallic balance with a blued overcoil hairspring, enamel dial with Roman numerals, seconds dial, front case cover with blue enamel Roman numerals, back cover with an engraved monogram, case maker's mark R&S, London hallmark for 191848mm wideCase back with an engraved monogram, case sides with small dents, front cover with glass missing, enamel dial with small scratches visible under an eyeglass, hand setting correctly and winding smoothly, movement in going order. Total watch weight 100g.

Lot 2236

(calibre 1520) lever movement signed, original matte finish black dial with luminous dagger, dot and baton markers, Mercedes hands, protected screw down crown, calibrated bezel, screw back with an engraved inscription, signed inside with maker's mark Montres Rolex S.A Geneva Switzerland, numbered 5513 and dated II.67, case serial number 1617133, Rolex stainless steel Oyster bracelet with a deployant fliplock clasp numbered 93150 and date code letter for 1983, end links stamped 593, with part of the guarantee paperwork noting that this watch was purchased on 20th March 1968 from D.A.Scott jewellers 37 Church Street Hartlepool40mm wideThis rare Submariner reference 5513 dial version is the very first matte finish dial in the 5513 which followed the earlier glossy finish dials. This dial was introduced in around 1966 and the collectors' so-called term is 'Meters First' which refers to the measurement depth rating reading with the metric rating first followed by the imperial feet reading second. This was only used for a few years until Rolex dials started to read the imperial rating first at the end of the 1960's. This is a rare example showing the original matte finish dial and original luminous zinc sulphide and tritium lume.Case and bracelet with surface scratches, case with minor dents in parts, bezel triangular dot marker at 12 is missing, bezel with scratches, bezel is stuck at present and not rotating, case back with an engraved inscription "Richard A Milner". This Rolex bracelet has been later placed onto this watch and from the letter date code dates this to 1983, bracelet clasp needs attention for it to close correctly, crown is screwing down correctly on the threaded tube, plexi glass with a crack and scratches, black dial surface has faded , the signature and dial lettering is very clear, luminous hour markers has evenly faded but with a good patina, hour markers are very slightly discoloured in parts, hand setting correctly, movement is dirty, movement in going order.

Lot 61

A 19th century two day mahogany marine chronometerSigned 'Eleve de' Parkinson & Frodsham London #537The three part case with blank brass cartouche to the top lid, the centre section with brass flower button above a later ivory signature plaque, the lower section with inlaid brass escutcheon with an ivory number plaque below and folding handles to the sides. The 3.25 inch silvered Roman dial enclosed by an Arabic minute band, subsidiary power reserve from 0-48 at XII and observatory style seconds dial at VI, signed eleve de Parkinson & Frodsham London No. 537 below the gold spade hands. The spotted movement with four ringed pillars and maintaining power to the chain fusee, free sprung blued steel helical balance spring with diamond endstone and Earnshaw type escapement, cut and compensated bimetallic balance with circular timing weights, with typical bayonet-fitting sprung dust cap in a weighted, scratch-numbered gimballed bowl. Ticking with two winding keys and a case key. 15.5 x 15.5 x 16Footnotes:Purchased 16 August 2002 from Gerald Marsh Antique Clocks, Winchester. There are three people associated with Parkinson & Frodsham that are known to have used the 'eleve' signature. The first is William Edward Frodsham who was the second eldest son of William James, born in 1814. He entered into his apprenticeship with his father in 1823, but tragically drowned in 1825, at the age of 20. Despite this, two marine chronometers are known to exist by him, numbered 1 and 2, and both signed on the dial Eléve of Parkinson & Frodsham. No. 2 accompanied Charles Darwin aboard H.M.S Beagle, and was sold in these rooms in 2014.The second person to use the 'eleve' name was Thomas Cotterell. Thomas Cotterell (also spelled Cottrell) was based at 163 Oxford street as Cotterell & Co. throughout the 1820's-1830's. Cotterell is known to have signed some marine chronometers as Elevé de Parkinson & Frodsham, despite not being listed as an official apprentice. One chronometer is known to be signed as Cotterell and Co., London and Parkinson & Frodsham, meaning it is possible that Cotterell made movements for Parkinson & Frodsham, rather then having been apprenticed to the firm. Further evidence of his association with Parkinson & Frodsham is that several chronometers were entered in the Greenwich trials by T. Cotterell, yet Parkinson & Frodsham literature took credit for the favourable results received. A chronometer made by Cotterell, No. 368, was bought for 80 guineas in 1829 by the government, to be used on the HMS Rainbow 1823, a 28-gun warship. He had several correspondences between 1822-1835 with Greenwich observatory, regarding the Trials and various parties interested in buying his chronometers. Beyond this, very little is known about his life, including when he stopped trading. The third person to consider is Henry Herbert Frodsham, William Edward Frodsham's nephew. Henry Herbert Frodsham was born in 1850 to Henry Frodsham, a Liverpool watch and chronometer maker and brother of the above-mentioned William Edward Frodsham. Henry Herbert served his seven-year apprenticeship with Thomas Robert Russell, completing it in 1871. After his apprenticeship, he was made a manager of Thomas Robert Russell and sent to manage their branch locations in Chile, then Germany, and finally London, where he seems to have established his own shop at 33 Picidilly, staying there between 1881-1884. A deck watch is known by him from this date, and it is signed on the dial Henry Frodsham élève of Parkinson & Frodsham, Change Alley, London. By 1886 Henry Herbert had moved to Bedford, again establishing himself as a watchmaker. In 1897, he went in to business with his wife Catherine, who was an optician, and formed H & C Frodsham, specialising in optics, whilst still offering watch repairs. Henry Herbert Frodsham died in 1915, but H & C Frodsham continued as an opticians under his daughter, Dorothy Frodsham, until her retirement in 1961.It seems likely that this particular chronometer was made by Thomas Cotterell. Cotterell outlived William Edward Frodsham and spent longer working in London then Henry Herbert Frodsham. Cotterell also used a grammatically correct French signature, eleve de, rather then William Edward and Henry Herbert, both of whom used eleve of. Why Cotterell didn't include his name, as he had done on previous examples remains unknown. The trade sticker in the chronometer box is from Liverpool nautical instrument and chronometer maker Alexander Cairns. He is recorded as working at 12-13 Waterloo Road between 1859-1872, having previously worked at 32 Waterloo Road, just up from Waterloo Dock. There is no record of interaction between Cairns and Parkinson & Frodsham. However, the latter had two branches in Liverpool, four wards east, also just up from the docks. It is possible that this chronometer may have been sent from the London workshop to be sold in Liverpool, though this cannot be confirmed.University of Cambridge (2015) Cambridge Digital Library: Papers of John Pond. Lot 99

An extremely fine and rare third quarter of the 18th century mahogany longcase clock with perpetual calendarEdmund Prideaux, LondonThe arched hood surmounted by a concave moulded caddy running from front to back, the sides of the hood set with a silk-back sound fret over a glazed panel on each side, the long break arch trunk door with flame figuring framed by a well moulded edge, the base with applied shaped panel on a double stepped apron. The 12 inch arched brass dial set to the arch with a calendar arc engraved with four scales for each month (the first 'February' scale is marked to 29, the other three marked to 28) over a circular subsidiary marked 'Leap Year; First after Leap Year; Second after Leap Year'; and 'Third after Leap Year' with single blued steel tapering hand. The silvered circular clock dial with Roman and Arabic numerals framing the large subsidiary seconds dial and rare shaped moonphase aperture at VI with painted moon on a starry ground, with blued steel hands. The weight driven movement with specially cast bottle shaped shouldered plates united by six knopped pillars. The going train with Harrisons maintaining power to a deadbeat escapement, all wheels of six crossings and set in endstops screwed to the backplate, the wooden rod pendulum with twin suspension spring block and terminating in a heavy brass-clad lenticular bob with engraved rating nut, with rack striking on a bell. 2.4m (7ft. 10ins) high.Footnotes:Edmund Prideaux started working in London around 1743. He was originally from Camelford in Cornwall, where his grandfather had been the Mayor between 1689-1695. His family had been living in the county since at least the 1500's. In 1745, he married Elizabeth Dinham and they had two children; a son Edmund, who married and returned to Cornwall and a daughter, Elizabeth, who sadly died in 1753. He died on 1st October 1796 and his will describes him as watch maker working from premises at 31 Hatton Garden, where he had been since 1780, and living at that time in St. Andrew, Holborn. One of his executors is listed simply as 'Elliot', there were several clock and watchmakers of this name in London around this time, and it is quite possible that one of his executors was a fellow horologist. In the will he instructed his executor to sell off the Hatton Garden premises in order to pay for his bequests and any outstanding debts. His bequests included funds for his wife to be kept for the rest of her life; £20 to his nephew John and John's two daughters, as well as bequeathing John his full wardrobe; £20 to his servant, Anne, and £20 to his executor. Beyond these bequests, he wanted the remaining funds to be divided equally between his grandchildren when each reached 21 years of age; and his son Edmund's wife, should she be a widow at that time The current clock is very similar to another Perpetual calendar longcase by Prideaux, illustrated on pg. 416, Figure 11/55, in The Longcase Clock by Tom Robinson. It has been suggested that, because the calendar mechanism is so complicated, yet practically identical to that of an Eardley Norton perpetual calendar longcase, both makers were using the same supplier. CASANOVA GIACOMO: (1725-1798) Italian Author and Adventurer. An excellent and lengthy A.L.S., `Giacomo Casanova´, with his full name, three pages, 4to, Dux, 11th January 1790, to Count Antonio Collalto ('Your Excellency, my Beloved Patron'), in Italian. Casanova thanks his correspondent for his letter which he has just received and states in part `.. especially interesting seems to me the election of Counselor to your Excellency of Count Odoardo, your dignified son. An appointment which grants a noble and wise member to the senate.´ Casanova further refers to Prince Ruspoli and makes an amusing comment `…considering that Bacchus and Mars have never been my favourite divinities..´ Further again, Casanova mentions a new he has received related to Mirabeau, and expresses his contempt for the French author, stating `I have received today the news that the bestial Mirabeau, chief of the rebels assassins who dethroned the Christian King, is dead as a result of the wounds received on a duel. This death distresses me because I had the hope of meeting him somewhere, kill him and watch him die. He is an infamous writer who has dishonoured crowned heads and famous writers, and among them our illustrious Abbot Boskovitch who he treats as an ignorant.´ Before concluding, Casanova comments on the Emperor´s health stating `I wish that His Majesty the Emperor and King will recover his lost health and that he will enjoy it for long without having any further troubles, surrounded by his loyal servitors, listening to the good advices he receives from the wise people who abound in his court.´ Some very light overall age wear and very small stain to the third page edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise about VG     Count Antonio Collalto - Italian Nobleman and Military officer. Patron of Casanova. Translation into French of the paragraph referring to Mirabeau. « J'ai reçu aujourd'hui la nouvelle que le bestial Mirabeau, chef des rebelles assassins qui ont détrôné le roi très chrétien est mort des blessures reçues en duel. Cette mort m'afflige parce que j'avais l'espoir de le rencontrer quelque part et de le voir mourir de ma main. C'est un écrivain infâme qui a déshonoré des têtes couronnées et des écrivains fameux, parmi lesquels notre illustre abbé Boskovitch, qu'il traite d'ignorant » N.H. Odoardo, son of Count Antonio Collalto. Member of the Major Council of Venice 1789-90Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, Comte de Mirabeau (1749-1791) French Writer and an early Leader of the French revolution. President of the National Constituent Assembly 1791. A successful orator who became the voice of the people.Mirabeau did not die in January 1790 as Casanova comments. Hdrs-T.F.); 1914-15 Star (2147 L. Cpl. W. Henderson. R. Highrs.); British War and Victory Medals (2147 Sjt. W. Henderson. R. Highrs.) edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine (4) £700-£900 --- M.M. London Gazette 23 August 1916. The original recommendation - taken from the War Diary of the 4th/5th Battalion, Black Watch - states: ‘While holding front line trenches in the Ferme du Bois section, on the morning and afternoon of 2 July 1916, Sergeant Henderson did excellent day patrol work from point S.10c.5.2 to S.10d.15, for the purpose of recovering wounded of the 12th Royal Sussex Regiment. One wounded man was found about 50 yards from the enemy’s line. After an hour and a quarters work this man was successfully brought back and over a broad ditch to our lines. Sergeant Henderson went out many times on the same quest.’ William Henderson, a member of ‘A’ Company, 4/5th Battalion, Black Watch, was recommended for the M.M. by Lieutenant-Colonel G. A. McL. Sceales on 4 July 1916, following the above cited deeds on the Festubert-Neuve Chapelle front (the same source refers). He originally entered the French theatre of war as a Corporal in late February 1915, but his MIC entry confirms subsequent service as a Piper. Shortly after being awarded his M.M., Henderson’s unit moved to the Somme, where it took over the line between the River Ancre and Beaucourt Road, and launched an attack against enemy positions opposite Hamel on 3 September 1916 - ‘A’ and ‘C’ Companies advanced at dawn but were eventually driven back with losses of 218 men killed or wounded. In fact, the 4/5th Black Watch remained heavily engaged on the Somme front until November, attacks on the Schwaben Redoubt resulting in further heavy casualties.

Thompson was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment of Foot on 29 September 1877, after 19 years and 292 days in the ranks, on which occasion he was presented by the Officers of his former Regiment with ‘a sword and belt, and a gold watch, in recognition of his good services during a long membership of the regiment, including the China campaign.’ (Regimental History refers). He served with his new Regiment during the Second Afghan War from 28 September 1879 to 7 September 1880, and was promoted Lieutenant on 11 October 1879. Promoted Lieutenant on 1 January 1902, he served in H.M.S. Minerva from 22 September 1908 to 17 October 1910, and took part in the relief operations following the Messiana Earthquake, 28 December 1908. Promoted Captain on 1 January 1912, Hazeon served during the Great War initially in H.M.S. Natal, and narrowly escaped being blown up when the Natal was sunk by an internal explosion that destroyed the armoured cruiser whilst at anchor in the Cromarty Firth on 30 December 1915. Out of her complement of over 700 men more than half (25 officers and 380 ratings) perished. The loss of life would have been even greater had not most of the off-duty watch been absent on shore leave at the time. Hazeon transferred to H.M.S. Hampshire on 16 February 1916, and his luck ran out when he was killed in action when the Hampshire, conveying Field Marshal Lord Kitchener on a diplomatic mission to Russia, struck a German-mine off Orkney on 5 June 1916 and sank within 15 minutes with the loss of 737 lives. There were only 12 survivors. Hazeon’s body was recovered from the sea and he is buried in Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery, Hoy, Orkney. Sold with a photographic image of the recipient; copied record of service and other research.
