Pair: Private T. C. Steele, Gordon Highlanders, who was accidentally killed by gun shot in Ireland on 28 July 1921 British War and Victory Medals (S-42265 Pte. T. C. Steele. Gordons.) minor edge bruise to BWM, otherwise nearly extremely fine (2) £60-£80 --- Terence Coins Steele attested for the Gordon Highlanders and served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front. Re-enlisting following the cessation of hostilities, he was re-nubered 2868123, and served with the 2nd Battalion in Ireland. Steele ‘died tragically as a result of a revolver accident at Curragh Camp, in Ireland, and the extremely sad circumstances cast a gloom over his home and upon all his many friends both in Dundee and in the regiment to which he belonged. The tragedy occurred at the end of last week. Private Steele was in the canteen preparing dinner when an officer dropped a revolver in a tent fifty yards off. The revolver struck the bedstead and went off, the bullet lodging in Steele’s stomach. Death was almost instantaneous. Brought over from Ireland during the week-end the body arrived in Dundee on Monday, escorted by a sergeant-major from Curragh Camp. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon from his mother’s house at 43 Milnbank Road, and was witnessed by a large crowd. A firing party composed of 20 men from the Black Watch, and bugler and piper from Perth, accompanied the coffin to its resting-place in Balgay Cemetery. The coffin was laid on top of a gun drawn by eight horses. The sadness of the fatality is heightened by the fact that Private Steele left for Ireland with his regiment only about five weeks ago. He served for two years in France during the war, and on the cessation of hostilities signed on for other three years. He was of a genial disposition, and was thoroughly liked by all who knew him.’ Sold with copied research, including a photographic image of the recipient.

International Watch Co. Montre bracelet en acier mouvement automatiqueInternational Watch Co. A stainless steel automatic wristwatch Model: IngenieurDate: Circa 1960Movement: 21-jewel Cal.853 automaticDial: Silvered, applied polished bullet hour markers, gilt outer minute divisions, polished pointed baton hands with luminous inserts, centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished round, inner cap, screw down backStrap/Bracelet: Black leather Buckle/Clasp: Steel buckleSigned: Case, dial & movementSize: 37mmFootnotes:In the 1950's many watch brands including IWC saw the need to create antimagnetic watches for scientists and engineers. The Ingenieur was first launched in 1954 and the design stayed much the same until it was reimagined in the mid 1970's. After designing the iconic Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus, Gerald Genta was tasked with bringing the Ingenieur into modern times. Taking cues from the Royal Oak, the watch came back with a completely new design featuring a tonneau shaped case with a round bezel with five screws and integrated bracelet. The Ingenieur has gone on to become a hugely collectible watch with the modern variants still relying on Genta's classic design. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The model is recognizable by its lack of date feature, allowing the dial to have a well-balanced design. Early examples of the 5513 featured a glossy black dial with gilt text, and in the mid-1960's, Rolex started producing the reference with a matte dial and white printing. These dials featured the depth rating with meters indicated first '200m=660ft', and towards the end of the 1960's, Rolex began producing dials with the depth rating that indicated feet first. The matte dial reference 5513 appeals to vintage Rolex enthusiasts for its dial symmetry, durability, and place in Rolex history as inspiration for future Submariner models. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Saturation divers who had previously been issued with Rolex Submariners found that during decompression, the pressure inside the watch would force its way out through the weakest point which usually resulted in the loss of the plexiglass. In response to this, Rolex developed the Sea-Dweller. With a helium escape valve on the side, a greater depth rating of 610 meters and the removal of the cyclops from the crystal, the Sea-Dweller is a true tool watch and has been favoured by professional divers ever since its introduction. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

With such a short period of production the 6234 is a highly prized watch with limited availability. It is believed that approximately only 2300 examples were released in steel and naturally far less in gold. In 1960 Rolex replaced the 6234 with the 6238 which also shares the nickname of 'Pre-Daytona'.The present lot is offered for sale by the original owner who purchased the piece in 1964 whilst in the Royal Air Force in Singapore. At the young age of just 20, the owner bought the watch through NAFFI on HPI. A keen sailor, the owner was drawn to the watch by the practical nature of the 3 minute markers to the subsidiary dial at 3 o clock - when racing this was ideal for counting down after the three minute warning gun was fired. The owner went on to have a long career within the RAF spanning 25 years before establishing his own business dealing in reclaimed building materials. The watch was serviced by Hertfordshire Horologists (Tring) in 2017 and 2022 and is accompanied by the service guarantee cards. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
