Nelson Mandela No Easy Walk To Freedom - SCARCE 1ST. EDITION OF MANDELA`S FIRST BOOK 8vo. A superior copy of this book, very scarce in the hardcover edition. The Cape Government Railways had, by then, reached the Kimberley diamond fields, and - following Cecil Rhodes` vision of the `road to the North`, his dream of a Cape to Cairo line - was extending into the Zambezi hinterland. Logan, whose meteoric rise was based on an energetic and meticulous efficiency, had been awarded the government catering contract at Touws River, which lies within the vast spaces of the Karoo.` Very good Claremont Mallard Publishers 1997

For Lawrence Green`s large public this is the second of his pre-war books to be published in South Africa. His books had the same lyrical press overseas as in this country. The London Times, Illustrated London News, etc. all praised his work. As the Times Literary Supplement said: `That tireless traveller of unfrequented sea lanes lends enchantment to many a northern escapologist`s winter discontent!`` Good Cape Town Howard Timmins 1973

Green (Lawrence G.) TO THE RIVER`S END 218mm x 145mm x 19mm 208pp. Original cloth hardcover with price unclipped d/w. Previous owner`s rubber stamp to back of frontispiece. Apart from a few tears to d/w, this book is in very good condition indeed. Here are the Kalahari solitudes and the lonely stretches of the Orange River - but always the characters stand out against the back-ground. Explorers, hunters, half-castes, Bushmen, pioneer farmers, policemen, outlaws, priests, trekboers, prospectors; these are the people of the book and the river is the thread that links them. `To The River`s End` received glowing reviews in newspapers throughout the Union and Rhodesia. `Lawrence G. Green now stands in the forefront of South African authors and is pre-eminent in his own chosen field....To the River`s End is tingling reading with the smell of woodsmoke and the glitter of far stars in it.` Good Cape Town Howard Timmins 1948

Died: April 23, 1616, Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom) A NOTE ON THE SPELLING OF `SHAKSPERE` The spellings come primarily from Stratford and its environs and from London, with a few from a wider area of Warwickshire. A few appear to be members of other families with the same name. Most of the Stratford spellings come from documents involving William’s father, John Shakspere (who signed after the clerk wrote his name with an X or the mark of a glover) and who was an important man in Stratford for a time. Of the spellings by the Stratford clerk of John’s name, the most often seen is Shakspere––10. For others than John there were four more with that spelling. http://politicworm.com/oxford-shakespeare/to-be-or-not-to-be-shakespeare/why-not-william/the-authorship-question-2/how-he-spelled-his-name/ Good London Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. All told, there have been nearly thirty editions, with an aggregate number of nearly three hundred thousand copies. If we include the editions printed in foreign languages, the number would be close to 50,000 more, or nearly 350,000 in all. It therefore transpires that the book written by A.I.Root for beginners, has finally developed into the ABC and XYZ of Bee Culture. A.I.Root`s first book (published in 1877) was designed primarily for beginners, and hence the name, `ABC of Bee Culture`. Later on there came a call for a book which would cover the need of the more advanced as well as that of the beginner...... Very good Medina, Ohio The A.I. Root Company 1948
Edmund Calamy (compiler) Cromwell’s Soldier’s Bible 1895 12cm x 19.2cm 1895 Facsimile Edition, Elliot Stock, 62 Paternoster Row, E.C. London. 12mo., 12cm x 19.2cm, 16pp. Yellow paper stringed wraps, with black titles and portrait of Cromwell to front. Sixteen pages of facsimile print plus 5 page introduction by Viscount Wolseley. Title Page: Cromwell’s Soldier’s Bible: being a reprint, in facsimile, of “The Souldier’s Pocket Bible”, compiled by Edmund Calamy, and issued for the use of the commonwealth army in 1643. With a bibliographical introduction and a preface by Field Marshall the Rt. Hon. Viscount Wolseley, K.P., G.C.B. The Soldier`s Pocket Bible was first issued in 1643 to Cromwell`s army and was put in general use among his soldiers. The Soldier`s Pocket Bible had just 16 pages that contained some 150 verse quotations from the Geneva Bible, all related to war and intended to inspire morale among Cromwell’s soldiers. The 150 war-related verses were organized in sixteen sections. Cromwell helped select some of the verses used and supervised the editing of the Soldiers Pocket Bible by Edmund Calamy. It was usually buttoned on the inside waistcoat, placed near the heart, and under the soldier`s outer coat. English Puritan church leader Richard Baxter, relates a story that the life of one of Cromwell`s soldiers was saved by his carrying a copy of the Soldier`s Pocket Bible near his heart; a bullet fired at him became lodged in the pamphlet instead of his heart. Two copies exist of the 1643 edition of The Soldier`s Pocket Bible. The London copy was presented by George III to the British Museum. The only other 1643 copy known is found in the United States and was once owned by the prominent 19th-century book collector George Livermore. The work was reissued in 1693 under the title `The Christian Soldier`s Penny Bible.` This version is similar to Cromwell`s Soldiers` Pocket Bible except for changes to some of the `Headers` and minor alterations in the text. The latter reflect the King James Version of the Bible rather than the Geneva Bible text used for the 1643 edition. In 1861 Riverside Press reprinted one hundred copies of the 1643 text in facsimile for Livermore. At the time of the American Civil War, the American Tract Society printed The Soldier`s Pocket Bible in large numbers to serve as a religious manual for the Northern troops. About fifty thousand copies of The Soldier`s Pocket Bible were reprinted for the troops at that time. Cromwell`s Soldier`s Pocket Bible was the first of the shortened, concise Bible versions that became popular for distribution to troops by military authorities and for use by individuals for personal guidance and inspiration. Condition: Cover worn and torn on spine and chipped and scuffed round the edges. String binding is tight. Pages age-toned and very slightly stained. Pencil mark on p 4 of the introduction. Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth POETICAL WORKS OF LONGFELLOW Octavo (57mmx47mm) About the Author: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (February 27, 1807 – March 24, 1882) was an American poet and educator whose works include `Paul Revere`s Ride`, The Song of Hiawatha, and Evangeline. He was also the first American to translate Dante Alighieri`s The Divine Comedy and was one of the five Fireside Poets. Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, which was then a part of Massachusetts. He studied at Bowdoin College. After spending time in Europe he became a professor at Bowdoin and, later, at Harvard College. His first major poetry collections were Voices of the Night (1839) and Ballads and Other Poems (1841). Longfellow retired from teaching in 1854 to focus on his writing, living the remainder of his life in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in a former headquarters of George Washington. His first wife Mary Potter died in 1835 after a miscarriage. His second wife Frances Appleton died in 1861 after sustaining burns when her dress caught fire. After her death, Longfellow had difficulty writing poetry for a time and focused on his translation. He died in 1882. Longfellow wrote predominantly lyric poems, known for their musicality and often presenting stories of mythology and legend. He became the most popular American poet of his day and also had success overseas. He has been criticized, however, for imitating European styles and writing specifically for the masses. Montague (Lieut.Col. W.E.) BESIEGED IN THE TRANSVAAL Small 8vo (160 x 105 mm) By Lieut.Col. W.E. Montague, Second Battalion Connaught Rangers. 100 pages, original red light card wrappers, occasional light foxing, overall a very good copy. The siege of Standerton during the First Anglo-Boer 1880-1. ‘On 20 December, 1880 two companies of the 94th Regiment (Connaught Rangers) under Captain Froom were on the way from Wakkerstroom to join their headquarters in Pretoria. After being stopped by a party of Boers, and also being worried about the fate of the garrison at Standerton, he decided to make for that town, the nearest British garrison. Major Montague of the 94th arrived at Standerton from Pietermaritzburg on 24 December to take command of the garrison, which consisted of 3 companies of the 94th (7 Officers and 250 men), one company of the 58th Regiment (1 Officer and 75 men), Mounted Infantry and volunteers (40 men), with a few sappers and men belonging to the Commissariat and Hospital Corps. The civilian population numbered 450. The garrison improvised a heliograph out of mirrors procured locally. They also constructed a large wooden dummy gun which apparently served a useful purpose and kept the enemy guessing. South of the town, the Vaal River formed a natural protection and forts were built on the surrounding koppies and outworks constructed. First shots were exchanged on 29 December. On 4 January, 1881 the garrison made its first sortie, the intention being to occupy Stander`s Kop from where the enemy fire had proved annoying. An attempt to surprise the Boer piquet which occupied this height by day and was supposed to sleep in a farmhouse beneath the hill at night, ended in the raiding party being themselves surprised by a party of Boers. A second sortie was made by the garrison on 7 February when the mounted men attacked a small fortification occupied by about 60 Boers some two miles away: Reinforcements to the threatened fortification were ambushed by the raiding sortie. On 7 March the garrison repulsed a determined attack made by the Boers from the south. Officers bearing the official message from Sir Evelyn Wood rode into the town on 25 March, and so ended the siege, which lasted 88 days, bringing to a conclusion a well sustained resistance with casualties consisting of five killed - 2 privates of the 58th, one of the 94th, and two troopers of the mounted volunteers. She comments interestingly on life in the town during the occupation by the Boer forces and upon her work in the hospital which, for some of the time, was taken over by a German ambulance which she describes as being `fully equipped with all the latest improvements.` The hospital received wounded from the major battles which took place in the area including Magersfontein. In addition, eland, sable, puku, sitatunga, warthog, and other game was collected. December 1944, pages 3-15. `Andrew Smith from the moment of his arrival in South Africa in 1821, interested himself in the natural history of the sub-continent. He began immediately to collect and to preserve specimens, and to publish descriptions of them wherever possible, both in South Africa and overseas. He founded the South African Museum in June, 1825, and issued the first part of a descriptive catalogue of some of the contents in 1826. He published in `The South African Commercial Advertiser` a series of articles which were intended to give in outline the zoology of South Africa, and he was the leading spirit in the founding of the first scientific paper to be published in the country, `The South African Quarterly Journal`, to which he contributed many valuable ornithological notes. He went on quite a number of scientific expeditions during his stay in South Africa, but it was his great expedition of 1834-1836 that supplied the bulk of the material for his classic work on South African Zoology.` A prospectus was issued for the publication. `The Work will appear in periodical parts, price ten shillings each; and it is estimated that it will be completed in about thirty-four parts. As it will be necessary that the plates be published promiscuously, they will be arranged in five divisions, viz., MAMMALIA, AVES, PISCES, REPTILIA and INVERTEBRATAE. The plates of each of these divisions will be numbered independently, and the letter-press descriptions left unpaginated, so that on the work being completed, they may be arranged either agreeably to the general classified order which will accompany the last number or according to the particular views of the purchaser.` Very good Johannesburg Winchester Press (1838-1849) 1977

Sonia Clarke Zululand At War 1879. The Conduct of the Anglo-Zulu War. 26 X 27cm Brenthurst Series 10-General Editor, Eric Axelson. Zululand at War 1879-The Conduct of the Anglo-Zulu War- For over a hundred years the Anglo-Zulu War has remained a source of great interest and controversy. On 22nd January 1879 Queen Victoria`s proud redcoats were soundly defeated by King Cetshwayo`s well-trained and courageous Zulu soldiers at Isandlawana. Some hours later the tide was partly turned with the heroic British defence by the tiny garrison of Rorke`s Drift. However, British prestige and honour was again shattered when the young Prince Imperial of France, Louis Napoleon, was killed whilst out on a mapping expedition in Zululand. Lord Chelmsford, commander of the British forces in southern Africa, was superseded by the ambitious general Sir Garnet Wolseley, but not before Chelmsford had led his men to victory at Ulundi. It was left to Wolseley to capture Cetshwayo and to end hostilities. Inadequacies of the British army had been revealed in the Crimean War and reforms had supposedly been introduced to remedy the defects, but the Anglo-Zulu War showed clearly that many short-comings still remained, especially in the sphere of transport and supply. The letters in this volume, all previously unpublished, reveal this struggle for change and the opposing conservative and reforming elements within the army.Written mostly by officers serving in Zululand, the texts are freely expressed, without fear of censorship... [Fourie (Jopie)] AUTOGRAPH LETTER 255 x 200 mm Autograph letter, 255 x 200 mm, on lined paper. The edges are frayed and there are two tape stains and foxing marks. This handwritten copy of Josepf Johannes `Jopie` Fourie`s letter to General Louis Botha is one of the early copies made to circulate among friends, family and supporters of the 1914 Rebellion. In a time of war, fratricide and suspicion, Afrikaners who supported Jopie Fourie kept his letters well hidden. The poet, Jan Celliers records that he kept his Jopie letters hidden in a flask buried in his garden. Later, typed versions of Jopie`s letters were secretly circulated, but this handwritten copy, along with a few other copies, must be considered as historical source documents as the original version has still not seen the light of day. Jopie Fourie addressed this letter to General Louis Botha in the mistaken belief that Botha, as Prime Minister, was responsible for ordering his execution by firing squad. The tragedy is that neither Botha nor the nation were aware that the then Minister of Defence, Gen. Jan Smuts, used his powers under Martial Law, without even consulting Botha, to rely on the legal technicality that since Jopie Fourie had not first resigned his commission as a citizen force officer in the Union Defence Force, he could be shot. He was arrested on 16 December 1914, and a few days later on the Sunday morning of 20 December he faced his killers without a blindfold singing a hymn for them. At the time, Gen. Louis Botha was not even in Pretoria, but on his farm and the first time that he heard of Jopie`s death was hours later in the evening of the 20th December. The main ring leaders of the rebellion, such as Generals De Wet and Kemp were fined and served short periods of their prison sentences. The majority of historians hold that General Koos de la Rey was accidentally shot on 15 September 1915. This is how Jopie Fourie became the first and most important martyr of the Afrikaner cause and led to the downfall of Gen. Smuts in the 1948 election. The drama of the letters written by a condemned man hours before his death has inspired Afrikaners ever since, and whether or not Gen. Botha would have stayed the execution had he received Jopie`s letter before the execution remains a moot point. The sentence in this letter: `Ik ga op reisen en......Oom Louis en u zendt mij` would only have made sense to Gen. Louis Botha if he had read Jopie`s letter to the Afrikaner nation, drafted a few minutes before, which describes Jopie`s `reisen`, or journey to his heavenly Father and eternity with his trusted leader and friend, Jesus. Sometimes the names of the recipients of the copies of the Jopie letters had their names written at the top, but usually in the same hand. What looks like `De Wet` written in a different hand on both the right and left hand margins of this document cannot be explained. This detailed research kindly provided by Arnaud Labuschagne of Gandolph`s Books, Kensington, Johannesburg.
Ron Lock Blood on the Painted Mountain. Zulu Victory and Defeat Hlobane and Kambula, 1879 (SIGNED) 16 X 24cm Blood on the Painted Mountain-Zulu Victory and Defeat Hlobane and Kambula, 1879. The Zulu stronghold of Hlobane(`the painted mountain`) dominated a vast area of disputed land in northern Natal. It was the scene of a terrible reverse for the British, but at Kambula the next day they inflicted an even more catastrophic defeat upon the Zulus. The Zulus never fully recovered from this repulse, and it marked the turning point in the war. The slaughter at Hlobane was second only to that of Isandlwana two months earlier, which ravaged morale in the British Army. This was in part responsible for the highly questionable conduct of some of the officers when faced with the enemy at Hlobane, leading to the British rout at Devil`s Pass. Without defeat at Hlobane, however, victory at Kambula might not have been possible: the warriors of the leading Zulu regiments, over-confident after their resounding success, were easily provoked into an ill-judged attack on the enemy camp at Kambula, and exhausted themselves before the British survivors of the previous day`s battle set out in pursuit. leaving 1000 Zulu dead on the Zunguin Plain. Sir Reginald Coupland Zulu Battle Piece- Isandhlwana 14.5 X 22.5cm When he wrote this little classic, which historians of the period rank alongside Morris`s more famous Washing of the Spears. Sir Reginald Coupland was the foremost living authority on the history of the British Empire. In Zulu Battle Piece he describes, with swift and vivid strokes, the situation between whites and blacks, the great military qualities and terrifying military tactics of the Zulu warriors and the characters of the Englishmen, soldiers and politicians, involved in the disaster: and then having the consummate art and scholarship prepared the reader, he sets the great action in that strange, eerie land, until the reader can truly feel that he has lived through it himself. The aftermath brings him to Rorke`s Drift and the gallant British stand that averted irretrieveable disater. In his new introduction to this readable and concise work, Ian Knight discusses Coupland`s thinking and sets the book in its proper historical and literary perspective.
