AN ARCHIVE OF DOCUMENTS REGARDING THE LOSS AND SALVAGE OF H.M. SUBMARINE THETIS , JUNE 1939 comprising approximately 400 assorted documents circulated between the Admiralty; HMS 'Dolphin'; Cammel Laird ( Thetis's bulders); Mersey Harbour Board; Trinity House and others, and containing official reports, evidence, telegrams, letters, invoices, etc., each autographed, stamped and liberally annotated throughout, many marked Secret or Confidential and pinned in two volumes, various sizes, the outer paper sheets -- 13¼ x 8in. (33.7 x 20.3cm.) (A lot) Provenance: Believed to have come from the Mersey Harbour Board archives, dispersed 2006.Condition report: Generally good, upper few pages now detached, some ragged edges.
A George V gold sovereign, 1912, 'Egypt Salvage', in a Lloyd's of London brown and gilt coat of arms tooled leather presentation case, with a printed card from Lloyd's stating that 'This sovereign was recovered in June 1932 by the Italian Salvage Steamer 'Artiglio' from the P&O steamer 'Egypt' which sank off Ushant on May 20th 1922 in 70 fathoms after collision', facsimile signed by P. G. Mackinnon (Sir Percy Graham MacKinnon), Chairman of Lloyd's, 30th June 1932.Notes: The SS Egypt sank in the English Channel after colliding with the French ship SS Seine in 1922. She sank with her over 1 million pounds worth of gold and silver ingots and wooden boxes of gold sovereigns. 15 passengers and 71 crew lost their lives during the sinking and 252 were saved. The 1932 salvage is thought to have recovered less than 1,000 sovereigns, with some 14,000 still at the bottom of the ocean.

A WWI Souvenir in the form of a 21cm diameter life belt hand painted with flags, the dates 1915-1916 and the title Submarine E.24, the centre being filled by painting of the submarine. HMS E24 was an E-class submarine of the Royal Navy built by Vickers, Barrow-in-Furness. She was launched on 9 December 1915 and was commissioned on 9 January 1916. E24 was a mine-laying submarine, she was mined off Heligoland Bight on 24 March 1916. A salvage operation was attempted in 1973 as she was believed to be a German U-boat.

Propaganda scarf 'Salvage Your Rubber', Jacqmar, 1944, headscarf in printed pale blue rayon, with decorative pink panel depicting domestic objects such as a tricycle, pram, sewing machine, tailor's dummy, etc., with black lettering around margins `Bedsteads into Bullets, Paper into shells, bones into bombs, metal into tanks, Trot out your Whatnots and save shipping', with slogan printed in black in centre 'Salvage your RUBBER', hand-rolled hem, several small holes, 32.5 x 32.5 cm (82.5 x 82.5 ins), together with: a silk handkerchief, circa 1945, colour-printed with the names of the Allies (Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, Chiang Kai-Shek), a trifle frayed to hem in places, 28 x 27 cm (11 x 10.75 in); a printed advertising scarf for Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits depicting a variety of luggage (hat boxes, bird in cage, umbrellas, golf clubs, travelling rugs, trunks, etc.), with a border featuring the company logo of rampant lions, 86 x 84 cm (34 x 33 in); and a printed silk headscarf depicting a central caned seat design surrounded by carriages, 86 x 87.5 cm (34 x 34.5 in) (Qty: 4)NOTESA rare propaganda scarf made by Jacqmar of Mayfair in London who made such items between 1940 and 1945. The chief designer was Arnold Lever who continued working for the company even after he had joined the RAF. The Imperial War Museum holds an example of this scarf in its collections.
