A PAIR OF WORCESTER CHOCOLATE, CUPS, ONE COVER, AND SAUCERS LATE 18TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY LATER DECORATED Decorated with a blue and gilt spiral band, the floral reserves attributed to William Billinglsey Crescent marks 17cm high, the dishes 17.5cm diameter Provenance: Bonhams, 5th December 2007, lot 311, where noted: While resident at Mansfield, it is known that Billingsley bought white porcelain from various sources for decorating purposes. John Sandon, Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), p 66 notes that the Chamberlain order books record the sale of white porcelain to Billingsley at his Mansfield address on 8th July 1799. Outside decoration is only occasionally found on Flight porcelain and it is possible these were 'old stock', supplied to the Mansfield workshop by the later partnership of Flight and Barr. The bouquets are very much in the Derby style and not at all typical of Worcester factory decoration during the Flight period. The flowers appear remarkably close to the hand of William Billingsley himself Condition Report: One cover missing, one saucer extensively restored, the remaining cover restored to the handle Some chips Condition Report Disclaimer
