Lot 1028

Please note: this lot does not include the limited edition print mentioned in the description. The historic 'Operation Nimrod' group of medals and memorabilia to Warrant Officer 2nd Class Ian White, Special Air Service and 17th/21st Lancers, who formed part of the team of S.A.S. men who stormed the Iranian Embassy in London on May 5th 1980 in a swift and decisive action that resolved a major hostage crisis. The Medals: General Service 1962-2007, clasp: Northern Ireland (24215027 TPR I.P. WHITE 17/21L.); South Atlantic, with rosette (24215027 CPL I P WHITE 17/21L (SAS)); Regular Army Long Service and Good Conduct, Elizabeth II (24215027 WO2 I P WHITE 17/21L); court mounted, nearly extremely fine. Accompanied by: Eighteen 19 x 24 mm press photographs, iconic images from the raid including S.A.S. teams abseiling down the rear of the embassy, others moving across the balconies, the staff sergeant leading 'Team Red' entangled in his abseil line with flames visible inside the embassy, and the detention of terrorist suspects; plans of the Embassy; a photograph of a recipient on a training exercise, having simulated an assault on a bus; a Daily Express special supplement, 'Day of the S.A.S.'; a complimentary copy of 'NOW' magazine featuring the assault on the cover; a limited edition print depicting the raid, a copy of the recipient's discharge certificate, and a souvenir Operation Nimrod 'Joker' card. The persecution of the Arab population of Iran's Khuzestan region by Ayatollah Khomeini (and his predecessors the Shahs) had inspired an implacable resistance movement which received support from Iraq under Saddam Hussein. The Arabs themselves were concerned with political and social rights. Hussein exploited this fact to manoeuvre against his rival the Ayatollah. Specifically, he believed that an attack staged in the West would draw attention to the plight of Khuzestan, and allow him to garner international approval for his planned invasion of Iran. With Iraqi backing, a six man team, the 'Group of the Martyr', occupied the embassy on the 30th April, taking 26 people hostage. The response was initially led by the police, but the S.A.S. acted immediately by deploying a team to the area in case their intervention was requested by the civil authorities. While they waited, they evolved a plan, and when, on the sixth day, a hostage was shot and his body thrown out of the embassy, the men of the Special Air Service went into action under the gaze of the television media. Within 17 minutes, the siege was at an end. Ian White was part of the team that entered the embassy from the roof. An explosive charge was lowered into a light well in the centre of the building and detonated as a distraction, and White's team abseiled into the lightwell to gain access through a window. During the descent, his secondary weapon, a Browning 9mm pistol, was lost owing to the notoriously poor quality holster with which the men were equipped. Nothing daunted, he continued from room to room, clearing each with 'flashbangs' and techniques perfected through rigorous training. He almost met with disaster while descending to a lower floor, as another team approaching the foot of his staircase directed sub-machinegun fire along the corridor into which he was about to step. He next encountered the well documented fire that had broken out owing to many of the curtains and carpets having been impregnated with accelerants. By sheer coincidence he had just completed a firefighting course, with the aim of posing undercover as an airport fireman, and this assisted him in temporarily controlling the blaze together with a colleague. The evacuation of the hostages involved forming a human chain to pass each one down the main staircase and out of the building to safety. White stood at the top of the chain, and such was the urgency of the situation that he resorted, effectively, to throwing them down the stairs. One of the terrorists concealed himself among the hostages, and because of the speed at which the S.A.S. were working at he was thrown down along with the rest of them. White saw in his hand a fragmentation grenade, and, unable to shoot down the stairs for fear of hitting a hostage, he and others shouted a warning to their colleagues below, who killed the terrorist before he could use it. All but one of the hostages alive at the start of the operation were rescued, and five of the six terrorists were killed - the sixth being captured. The team next had the chance to watch the news footage of their work., They did so in the company of the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, for whom the operation had been a considerable publicity coup, foreshadowing her popular aggressive stance over the Falkland Islands (where White was also to be deployed), and demonstrating to the world that Britain was not the soft target that Saddam Hussein had imagined. Their work done, they returned to Hereford at high speed, and the rapidity and decisive efficiency of the S.A.S. action is underscored by the fact that when White arrived home his wife suffered an adverse reaction to the residue from the 'flashbangs' that he had been using, which lingered on his clothing. The embassy siege is well known, and rightly celebrated, as the point at which the S.A.S. became famous. Since its genesis during the Second World War it had maintained a low public profile, consistent with the discrete and sometimes clandestine nature of its methods. In May 1980 it sprang from obscurity onto the television screens and made an indelible impression on the public mind. But these events are important for other reasons. It was a notable tactical success, and in spite of what the modesty of White and others would suggest, this was by no means a foregone conclusion. Counter terrorism was an emerging form of warfare, and the success of Operation Nimrod was in contrast to a certain near-contemporary actions which had ended very badly. It is revealing to note the various mishaps that occurred, some of which affected White directly; because none of them influenced the outcome of the mission. Problems that might well have resulted in failure were nullified by the professionalism of the S.A.S. It also confirmed, emphatically, the relevance of the S.A.S. in the post-war era. Prior to Operation Nimrod this had been called into doubt, and the regiment was threatened by budget cuts, and possible disbandment. After Nimrod its value was beyond dispute, and its future was secured. The recipient participated in the seminal S.A.S. action of the post war years, a major milestone in the history of the regiment - and of special forces more generally - making this group a truly historic acquisition for the collector. These medals (and a slightly greater quantity of memorabilia) sold in these rooms 22/11/2017.

John Charles Dollman RWS RI ROI (1851-1934)'A Very Gallant Gentleman' - Captain Lawrence Oatespen, ink and watercolour heightened with white59 x 99cmProvenance: John Charles Dollman was born in Hove, Sussex, on 6th May 1851; his family were booksellers there. He lived at Hove House, Ditchling, where he painted many of his South Downs Landscape works. The present painting was given to the Thompson family, Beacon House, Ditchling Beacon, Underhill Lane, Sussex, by Ruth Dollman (Mrs Maurice Webb), Dollman's daughter, who lived in Ditchling until her death aged 90 in 1965.This is the original sketch by Dollman for his finished painting which hangs in the Cavalry Club, London. In the present sketch Captain Oates, as he walked to his death, has poles, and in the painting widely seen he just has mittens. The painting was commissioned by Officers of the Inniskilling Dragoons in 1913, and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1914. A smaller preparatory sketch is in the Scott Polar Research Institute, at the University of Cambridge.Lawrence Edward Grace 'Titus' Oates (1880-1912) is remembered as a member of the ill-fated expedition to the South Pole, led by Captain Scott. In order to ensure that his colleagues had a better chance of survival when he found himself incapacitated by frostbite and gangrene, Oates deliberately walked out of his tent into a blizzard, having uttered the celebrated words: ' I am just going out and I may be some time.'Oates was born in Putney to a well-to-do family; his uncle Frank Oates was a naturalist and explorer. Oates attended both Wellington School and then Eton, subsequently obtaining an army commission. He saw active service in the Boer War, during the course of which he sustained a shattered thigh bone and was recommended for the Victoria Cross. In 1906 Oates was promoted to the rank of captain and became known by the soubriquet of 'Titus' after the seventeenth century priest of the same surname. Following tours of duty in Ireland, Egypt and India, Oates volunteered for Scott's Antarctic expedition of November 1911. Oates came with glowing army references and was described as 'a man of fine physique, full of pluck, energy and spirit.'Oates was accepted mainly on the strength of his experience with horses - his role was to look after the 19 ponies that Scott intended to use for sledge hauling during the initial food depot-laying stage and the first half of the trip to the South Pole. Scott eventually selected him as one of the five-man party who would travel the final distance to the PoleThe outgoing journey of 895 miles across Antarctica through the snow and ice took 79 days. Finally reaching the South Pole on 18th January 1912, the party was disappointed to discover that it had been forestalled by the rival Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen 35 days earlier. 'We are not a very happy party tonight' reported Oates. 'Scott is taking his defeat better than I expected.''Now for the run home and a desperate struggle', recorded Scott, 'I wonder if we can do it.' Plagued by frostbite and inclement weather, with temperatures dropping as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius, the little group struggled on painfully. 'Titus's toes are blackening and his nose and cheeks are dead yellow,' noted a companion. By 6th March, the harsh conditions, compounded by malnutrition, had taken their inexorable toll. Scott noted, 'Poor Oates is unable to pull. He sits on the sledge when we are track searching - he is wonderfully plucky, his feet must be giving him great pain ... 'On 15th March, Oates said he could go no further. By this point, with advanced frostbite on his hands and feet, it would take him two hours just to put on his footwear. He suggested to the others that they left him in his sleeping bag which they refused to do and urged him to struggle on. Realising his existence was proving a liability to his companions, that night Oates walked out of the tent into a blizzard. Scott recorded in his diary: 'We knew that poor Oates was walking to his death, but though we tried to dissuade him, we knew it was the act of a brave man and an English gentleman.'The remaining trio struggled on for another 20 miles where their frozen bodies were eventually discovered by a search party on 12th November 1912. Oates's body was never found. A cairn and inscribed cross were erected by the search party near to where he was presumed to have died.Oates's reindeer-skin sleeping bag was recovered and is now at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge. There is an Oates Museum at Gilbert White's House, Selborne, Hampshire. The Royal Dragoon Guards, the successor to the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, have a regimental day to remember Oates, and in 1913 his brother officers erected a brass memorial plaque to him in the parish church of St Mary the Virgin in Gestingthorpe, Essex, which his mother, Caroline, faithfully polished weekly for the rest of her life. The church is opposite his family home of Gestingthorpe Hall. For further information, see Sue Limb and Patrick Cordingley, 'Captain Oates, Soldier and Explorer', published by B T Batsford, 1982.Condition report: 39in Long 23in High. 1935 Auburn Boat-Tail Speedster ReplicaRegistration no. 626 YUNChassis no. DMV82763CAOdometer Reading: 16,554 MoT Expiry: Exempt *Traditional looks with modern running gear *A fraction of the cost of the 'real thing' *Good mechanical spares support The 1960s saw a rise in the replica (or 'evocation') industry in the USA, where several evocative pre-war cars were reprised with contemporary running gear while retaining the looks of the original model. MG had two hot hatchback models, the Metro and the Maestro, the latter joined by an MG-badged Montego saloon. On offer here is a 1989 Maestro 2.0EFi that has vendor-assessed good bodywork and red paint, the trim and alloy wheels/tyres also in good order, the vendor says. 1901 Renault 450cc Series E 4-seater TonneauReg. no. A 2743Chassis no. 023Engine no. 4749VCC Dating Certificate  1217Louis Renault built his first car in 1898 utilising a primitive tubular chassis and a propriety De Dion engine. Having secured substantial financial backing production soon started at Billancourt with the 1 3/4 and 3 hp cars. To publicise the cars Louis and his brother Marcel saw the benefits from active participation in early motor races. The Renault voiturettes were highly thought of, with Louis Renault leading a team of four cars in the 1901 Paris-Bordeaux Race. Louis won the voiturette class completing the epic race in a time of 9 hours and 31 minutes with Marcel second and the other two Renaults third and fourth. This early London to Brighton eligible car is unusual in that its complete history is known. It was supplied new by the sole agents for Renault Freres and Mors cars Roadway Autocar Co Ltd in London to Captain Basil Emery of Bulford Wilts and Hunstanton Norfolk. Captain Emery was a decorated career Army Officer and there is a photo on file taken c.1907 of him and his fiancé taken outside Ely Cathedral. The car was acquired in 1920 by a Mr Barnes, a chimney sweep from Reading who used it in his business. It was then acquired in 1927 by the well-known coachbuilders and motor dealers Vincents of Reading, and was in their custody until 1975. There then followed five owners until the current vendors late father acquired the car in 2006.This 1901 example is powered by a 4.5 single cylinder water cooled De Dion engine with automatic inlet and mechanical exhaust valves and features the traditional side radiators characteristic of Renault at that time. The car is running on the correct trembler ignition system and under the bonnet is fitted the De Dion type coil. The gearbox has three forward and a reverse gear. Now fitted with a four, as opposed to the original two, seat bodywork the front carries two plates cast with E Vicart et Fils of Levallois (Seine). The coachwork is presented in green with coach lining and red button upholstery and is fitted with brass sidelamps, an oil rear lamp and a brass horn.As well as being a proven early starter for the London to Brighton Run this historic veteran is also eligible for all VVC rallies including a number of popular single and twin events as well as Renault Frères events in France and is easily transportable. The car is offered with a current V5, an old style buff logbook, a VCC dating certificate and an extensive history file. Usefully there are also notes on the starting procedure as well as suggested driving technique both backwards and forwards.

Keen to capitalise on the demand for luxury small cars, BMC wasted no time in producing a Vanden Plas version of its popular 1100.In recent years this car has formed part of a large collection and as such has received little or no use and an element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again. Your inspection pre-sale is welcomed and encouraged to appreciate the potential of this rarely offered motor car which is strictly sold as seen. The Princess 1100's creation, however, was down to Fred Connolly, owner of the famous leather company of the same name who requested that an ADO16 1100 be given the full luxury treatment for his own personal use. When BMC management saw the result, they were so impressed, they made their own versionThe interior was fitted with a full-width Walnut-veneered facia with recessed instruments, Walnut door cappings and picnic tables fitted to the rear of each front seat. West of England cloth was used for the roof lining, best Wilton carpet covered the floor and Connolly leather was used for all seat wearing surfaces. Each front seat was fitted with an individual folding armrest and a central armrest was fitted to the rear bench. Reading lights were fitted to each rear quarter panel. Extra sound deadening was used to further damp external noiseWe understand that the indicated mileage as of 02/05/2017 was 25,033 and it remained with its first owner until 1996From the photographs, this example looks rather smart and is finished in Sherwood Green with the correct Ochre coach line and a Champagne Beige leather interiorYou can now book a one to one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between 11th and 17th September.
