John Button Beach Hut 2 Acrylic and pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, John grew up on England's east coast. He studied Architecture in Brighton and worked for many years with exhibition design, interiors and illustration. After moving to Sweden with his young family, John began painting and exhibiting more actively. More recently he's expanded his gallery representation beyond Sweden to throughout the U.K and to the U.S.A. In his paintings, he explores landscape and seascape through its patterns and textures, attempting to trigger a memory or a sense of place and ignoring conventional rules of perspective along the way. In his still-life studies, John tries to tease something extraordinary out of his everyday surroundings. Inspiration for John lies all around, from an un-cleared breakfast table to an upturned boat on a shingle beach or the childhood memory of a family walk. You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.

Constantinos Volanakis (Greek, 1837-1907)La prise du matin signé en grec (en bas à gauche)huile sur panneau21.5 x 45cm (8 7/16 x 17 11/16in).signed in Greek (lower left)oil on boardFootnotes:ProvenancePrivate collection, Athens.Bonhams London, The Greek Sale, 1 April 2003, lot 20.Acquired from the above sale and thence by descent to the present owner.Volanakis was one of the first artists who went against the powerful tradition of historicism promoting a fresh and innocent approach to nature. The 1869 International exhibition featuring works by French landscape painters of the Barbizon school, as well as seascape painters of the Hague school highlighted Volanakis' natural inclination and a common quest shared by many German artists.A profound love of the sea acquires a poetic quality in Volanakis' work. The small, unknown ports which lack human presence, the 'dialogue' between the boats and the sea and the hues that transform everything, concern Volanakis more than the impressionistic dissolution of colour. The organized composition is lightened by the fine details of the boats, the man that is partly behind the sail and the interplay of the two red spots in the foreground. The artist takes pleasure in the variety of the tones of the sea and the rocks, formed by a source of light resting outside of the painting, and the way the illusion of distance prevents us from clearly discerning any other vessels. The calm, serene seas with the vast horizons, so treasured by the artist after his encounter with Flemish seascapes, are a truthful statement of his art. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a reduced rate of 5.5% on the hammer price and the prevailing rate on buyer's premium if the item remains in EU. Conrad Hans Selmyhr, Norwegian 1877-1944- Seascape with a boat on choppy waters, by a cliff-face; oil on canvas, signed 'Conrad Selmyhr' (lower right), 61.4 x 80.5 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is characteristic of Selmyhr's output, depicting a boat off the coastline of (what is almost certainly) his native Norway. Selmyhr has suggested the apparent flimsiness of the vessel as it is thrown about on turbulent seas, in contrast to the gargantuan rocks which withstand the battering of the waves. Indeed, the dark, vertiginous cliffs, set against the stormy clouds beyond, create a palpable sense of foreboding and emphasise the danger of the seas.
Circle of Otto Reiniger, German 1863-1909- Seascape at sunset; oil on canvas, indistinctly signed (lower left), 48.5 x 74 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work recalls the landscapes and seascapes of Otto Reiniger, a German landscape painter who worked in the Impressionist style. The stylistic similarities are particularly evident in the artist's bold application of visible horizontal brushstrokes in the sky, and his confident, impressionistic use of white paint to evoke the spray of the waves beneath.
