A 19th Century Walnut Veneered Sewing Casket, of rectangular form, with chequered and herringbone banded borders, mother of pearl tulip lock escutcheon, the chamfered hinged cover opening to reveal a lift-out tray of seven fitted compartments with lift-off covers, with loose ring handles to the sides, the whole raised upon chequered bun feet, 35cm by 27cm by 24cm . One bun foot is damaged. Some splits to the veneer.
Early 19th Century inlaid mahogany sewing or work table, the crossbanded, ebony and boxwood-strung canted oblong top having three false frieze drawer fronts and one true drawer, each with twin turned ivory knob handles and kite escutcheons, over pleated silk work bag on tapering square section supports, brass caps and swivel castors united by X stretcher with a canted oblong under tier, 49.5cm x 36.5cm x 76.5cm high Condition: Top has some fading plus general light scratches and wear commensurate with age and use, minor cracking to crossbanding. Overall generally dry/faded but otherwise sound - **General condition consistent with age

Thomas Bruce, the seventh Earl of Elgin, became British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople in 1799, from where he obtained accurate drawings and casts of the best monuments of Grecian art. In 1801 he negotiated with the Turks, who then controlled Athens, to remove statues from the Parthenon and transport them back to England. Despite three years' imprisonment in France on the orders of Napoleon (who also attempted to acquire the collection from him), Lord Elgin eventually returned to England, where the collection was purchased by Parliament in 1815 and displayed in the British Museum. Rare complete set in original boards.
