λ John Caple (British b. 1966) From Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Mixed media on paper Signed (lower right) titled (lower left) and inscribed with white pen Image 18 x 61cm (7 x 24 in.) John Caple has exhibited with John Martin Gallery for over 20 years. The inspiration for his work is deeply rooted in his family's heritage who have been land workers in Mendip, Somerset since the eighteenth century. Captured by poetry, folklore and the history of Somerset his catalogue of work throughout his career has captured the memories of generations before him and depict his strong sense of connection to the natural world, shared by his forefathers. The present lot is inspired by From Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, English poet and critic. Coleridge lived on the Quantock Hills and his experiences and connections to this landscape are captured in his poetry. Wordsworth, Keats and Percy Shelley were also drawn to this landscape and it is through these generations of poetry that Caple has found a way of delving into the landscape and exploring the natural world through his artwork. His work stands as a visionary language for the poets of the past.
