* Hurricane P3576. A fragment of the RAF uniform worn by Wing Commander James Nicolson VC when he was shot down on 16 August 1940, Nicolson being the only Battle of Britain pilot to receive the Victoria Cross, presented in a glazed frame with a letter of provenance from his widow Muriel Nicolson, a black and white photograph of Nicolson in uniform plus a copper penny with a note stating it was found in his pocket when he was shot down, 40 x 56.5 cmQTY: (1)NOTE:Important Notice: All lots from the Tonbridge Battle of Britain Museum (lots 401-557) will remain in situ in the Museum and will only be available for viewing and collection from there in Tonbridge, Kent. All viewings and collections are strictly by timed appointment - please see front of catalogue or contact the auction office for details.Provenance: Tonbridge Battle of Britain Museum, Malcolm Pettit.James Brindley Eric Nicolson (1917-1945) was born in Hampstead, he was educated at Tonbridge School and joined the RAF on a short service commission in 1936. He joined 72 Squadron at Church Fenton the following year.He married Muriel Nicolson née Kendall in 1939 before joining 249 Squadron in May 1940 as a Flight Commander.On 16 August 1940 Nicolson was leading Red Section when his Hurricane P3576 was shot down in a surprise attack by Me109s over Southampton. Wounded in the left foot and with perspex splinter through his left eyelid, Nicolson prepared to abandon his burning Hurricane.As he did so a Me110 appeared in front of him and he slid back into his seat and fired at the enemy fighter. His cockpit now a mass of flames and he himself badly burnt continued firing until it became impossible to remain and he bailed out at 12,000 feet. His hands were severely burnt, parts of his face and eyelid all but severed, as he was near to the ground the Land Defense Volunteers (LDV) fired on him and Nicolson was wounded in the buttock by a shotgun pellet.Nicolson had landed at Millbrook and was treated at the scene by a doctor and nurse and he was placed on a lorry to be taken to the Royal South Hampshire Hospital, Southampton. After three weeks of recovery, he was moved to the RAF Hospital, Halton. Nicolson received the VC for his bravery which was gazetted on 15 November 1940.In April 1945 Nicolson was appointed Wing Commander at 3rd Tactical Air Force HQ at Comilla, Bengal. On 2 May he went on a bombing sortie in Liberator KH210 of 355 Squadron. After taking off from Salbani, the aircraft was 130 miles south of Calcutta when one engine caught fire. The aircraft crashed into the sea killing 9 of the 11 crew including Nicolson. He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial and his VC is displayed at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon.

A 19TH CENTURY DOUBLE BARRELLED PERCUSSION SHOTGUN belonging to Captain Tillbrook 50th Regiment late 24th Foot. The shotgun was made by J Nobbs of the Isle of Wight. The lock plate is engraved 'J Nobbs'. The barrel has a Damascus style pattern and retain 90% of its finish. Each lock is tight at full and half and can be dry fired. Housed in a wooden case with a metal circular plate engraved ' Philip L Tillbrook 24th Regt. The case is filled with accessories for the gun, powder flasks and shot measures Philip Limborch Tillbrook was born in Freckenham, Suffolk in 1831. The son of reverend Samuel Tillbrook and Frances Tillbrook. Tillbrook became an Ensign, without purchase in the 75th Foot on the 10th April 1849 , before transferring to the 24th foot on the 16th November 1849. On the 24th September 1850, by purchase he became a Lieutenant in the 24th Foot. On the 14th October 1851, he transferred to the 50th Foot. With that transfer date, we can now say he purchased the gun between September 1850 to 1851, or at least he used it in that period. With the 50th Foot, now promoted to Captain, he saw service in the Crimean War, serving there from 22nd August 1855 and being present at the fall of Sebastopol. He was awarded the Crimea Medal with clasp Sebastopol and the Turkish Crimea Medal. In 1860, Philip married Ada Whitmore, daughter of Major General Mortimer Whitmore. Philip and Ada had two sons Percy and Henry Upon his retirement from the Army with the rank of Major, he was appointed to the Honourable Corps of Gentleman at Arms, a ceremonial bodyguard from Queen Victoria. From 1878 until 1886 he was Clerk of the Cheque and Adjutant and from 1886 until retirement in 1890 Standard Bearer. At the time of the 1901 census he was living at Hanover Square, Belgravia. A year later aged 72 he passed away, with his estate being left to his wife.The gun looks to have light use and is in lovely condition.

Left barrel in proof though with some dents. Right trigger OK. Left trigger OK. Safety working. Joints OK. No ejectors. Minimum wall .022 therefore fairly thin, whilst in proof. Metalwork with some surface scratching conducive with age and use. One particular scratch to the left barrel underside. See image. Some discolouration to the metal throughout. Some surface rust to the metal work around the trigger and trigger guard. Woodwork basically sound though with some surface denting and scratching, again conducive with age and use though nicely figured. Case, whilst basically sound, with large crack across the grain from one side to the other and smaller crack nearer the hinge side of the top edge, again pretty much all the way across. Key escutcheon missing. See images for further detail. (It appears that this gun is a very early credited example of James Lang's treble grip snap action, as outlined in his Patent No. 687 of 1870. The relief engraving of the circular pivot under the action was changed swiftly to a normal incised engraving style. This information has been received by the auctioneers post cataloguing by expert in this field Robert Hodges Esq. to whom we are extremely grateful. His book "Joseph Lang, His Sons, and Their Guns" is due for publication in 2024).
