A Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society’s Marine Medal, 3rd type, silver, edge engraved ‘CAPT. J.W. MURRAY S.S.”BATONGA” FOR HAVING RESCUED 7 OF THE CREW OF THE ‘INDIAN CHIEF’ 23RD DEC 1895’, with silver brooch buckle. The Indian Chief was a barquentine laden with coal bound from Alloa to Barbados. After leaving Alloa she encountered tremendous gales in the North Sea making little headway such that after 20 days she was 100 miles of the Lizard with the vessel being greatly damaged and at risk of sinking. Distress signals were raised and were fortunately noticed by the steamer Batanga, a lifeboat crewed by volunteers was launched from the steamer. The lifeboat got near to the sinking vessel but due to wind and sea conditions it was impossible to get alongside meaning the crew of the Indian Chief had to jump into the raging sea. By swimming and the gallant assistance of the lifeboat crew all were safely got into the boat. The Indian Chief sunk before the lifeboat had returned to the Batanga. The rescued sailors were landed at Liverpool on 26th December 1895. Silver Board of Trade Gallantry medals were awarded to the crew of the lifeboat. During the rescue Captain Murray manoeuvred the steamer with much skill and judgement, so as to form a lee for the boat. Captain Murray had previously been presented with a gold chromometer by representatives of the Congo Free State and Belgian Companies in honour of his having been the first to prove that the Congo was navigable for large vessels above Boma, he successfully navigated the steamer Lualaba as far up as Matadi in June 1889.

Reverse with pin back fitting and Birmingham hallmarks for 1916. To the top is a ribbon in the Russian national colours and a brooch pin fitting. A 19th century State of Montana "Last Nail" World's fair brooch, inscribed with "Oro y plata" - "gold and silver", featuring the figures of two miners alongside an image of the sun rising over a mining valley, echoing the state seal of Montana, and set with a clear paste stone.This brooch is a copy of one made for Mrs Potter Palmer, the president of the Board of Lady Managers, from the commemorative last nail, made of gold, which was driven into the Women's Building at the World's Columbian Exposition in a ceremony in 1893, then removed and set into the brooch. The nail in this brooch, made in number to raise funds in 1893, is made up of copper, silver and gold.
