Our penbox is attributed to the artist Rahim Deccani, or a close follower of his. Other works by him are a lacquer casket in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (851-1889) which according to museum records was acquired by the donor in Persia in the 19th Century; a painting in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin (66.1); and two boxes sold at auction in Paris (see Mark Zebrowski, Deccani Painting, London, 1983, p. 201). Another penbox by Deccani in the Freer Sackler Galleries, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. (F1959.5), is the most closely comparable to the present lot and bears similar silver mounts. The subject matter of birds perching on flowering branches is a variation on the Persian theme of gol-o-bulbul (rose and nightingale), though the parrot is very much within India's artistic vocabulary. The inclusion of the hoopoe perhaps draws reference to the famous Persian poem, Mantiq al-Tair (Conference of the Birds) by Farid al-Din 'Attar where it serves as a spiritual guide (see Navina Najat Haidar in Sultans of Deccan India, 1500-1700: Opulence and Fantasy, New Haven and London, 2015, p. 250).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
