A Late 17th/ Early 18th Century Walnut and Marquetry Longcase Clock, by James Clowes of London, the 10ins square brass dial with silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, to the eight day two train five pillar movement striking on a bell, contained in ebonised and walnut case with moulded cornice, split spiral turned columns to hood, trunk inlaid with bird and floral marquetry, on plinth base with bun feet, 77.75ins high Note: James Clowes, born 1643, died 1706, was a member of the Clockmakers Company from 1671-1705Condition ReportExternally the clock appears to be in good overall condition showing some sign of historic cracking to the veneer in general. All the veneer appears to be present and free from any obvious sign of previous damage or repair. The rising hood is in good condition as are the twisted columns and brass work. The top of the hood is showing three distinct holes for finials or a pediment, neither of which are present. Likewise the top of the hood also appears to have had a replacement wooden panel but not recently. The interior of the hood shows original patination and the three glasses appear to be original and set in the original putty. The wood supporting the mechanism of the clock appears to be a later replacement. The mechanism is clean and bright and has been restrung fairly recently. The mechanism appears to be intact and functions correctly but should be regarded as not tested. The dial itself is clean and bright and appears to have had some retouching in certain minor areas but is crisp. We believe the minute hand may be a replacement. The silver chapter ring appears to be original showing some slight discolouration and wear commensurate with age and usage. The interior of the case appears original and shows a nice patination of age. The weights appear original. The hinges are likewise original and the glass to the front of the case. The marquetry is in fine order showing no obvious sign of any missing component. The base appears to be original however it has a crack through the middle of the marquetry panel of approximately 10ins running from right to left. The feet appear to be original. We believe the case may have been subject to some historic restoration, mostly to the base at the rear. Overall an honest example that may have seen some refreshment over the years.
