Lot 2057

An Austrian Silver Plate Mirror-Plateau, Vase and Stand, by Stephan Mayerhofer, Vienna, Mid 19th Century the mirror-plateau shaped circular and on four paw feet, the vase with a fluted lower body and scroll handles and supported on a centrally waisted stand, each with foliage and flower borders; Together With a further matching mirror-plateau and vase, stand lackingthe mirror-plateau 56.5cm diameter, the vase and stand 53cm high (5)Stephan Mayerhofer, who is perhaps most associated with Joseph Carl Klinkosch, with whom he worked in partnership in the late 1840 and into the early years of the 1850s, had a rather long career. Born in 1772 he became known in the late 18th century as the maker of silver plate on iron and steel and was later granted the Royal warrant as a maker of 'English plated wares', as can be seen on the present lot with the use of the double-head eagle mark. This warrant was granted in 1808 and that was followed by a grant allowing him to work in silver in 1825. Marked under each vase with maker's name and eagle mark. The one stand further stamped with maker's name. There is some wear to the marks. The mark on the stand somewhat obscured by lead solder repair to lug. The mirror-plateaus are apparently unmarked. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a loss to the silvering in some places. The mirrors on each with foxing and marks overall.

A Silesian or Polish Parcel-Gilt Silver Beaker, Probably by Siegmund Wolfgang Preuss, Ohlau/Oława, Late 17th Century tapering cylindrical and on spreading foot, the sides chased with three panels, various chased with an elephant, a goat and a lamb, all within gilt foliage scrolls85mm high, 3oz 1dwt, 95grMarked near rim with Ohlau/Oława town mark and maker's mark. There is some wear to the marks but in general they are still legible. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is most noticeable as a loss to the gilding and the high points.

A Scandinavian Silver Tankard, Maker's Mark A, Possibly Norwegian, Dated 1661 tapering cylindrical and on spreading base, the rim engraved in the Renaissance style with fruiting foliage scrolls, the lower body later chased with winged figures within foliage scrolls and auricular ornament, the hinged cover engraved with initials and dated 1661 and with a further engraved band dated 1701, the scroll handle with baluster thumbpiece 20.3cm high, 20oz 10dwt, 637gr The present tankard is very much in the style of Scandinavian tankards of the first half of the 17th century and perhaps mostly those from Norway. Such tankards are typically of a tapering form, with engraved decoration to the rim and mid-body. They also seem to share a domed cover with a further central dome which is typically variously engraved with coats-of-arms and dates or inscriptions. Three such examples are illustrated by Jorunn Fossberg, Norway’s Silver Heritage, 1000 Years of Norwegian Silver, Oslo, 1997, pp. 30-35. These examples include one marked for Rasmus of Skein, Oslo, 1611; one by Hans Rasmussen, Oslo, early 17th century and finally one by Lucas Steen, Bergen, circa 1630.Two further examples, by Jost Albertszenn, of Bergen are published by Vanessa Brett, The Sotheby’s Directory of Silver 1600-1940, London, 1986, pp. 406-407. The first, fig. 1945 was sold Sotheby’s, London, 15 July 1976, lot 89 and the second, fig. 1956 circa 1625 by the same in 1962. Albertszenn’s silver mark, as published online as well as by Hans Johan Storesund, 100 Norse Solvskjeer, 1580-1780, 1993, nos. 52, 52 and 56 is an A which a diagonal bar within a shaped shield, not dissimilar to the mark on the present tankard. Marked under base with maker's mark only. There is some minor wear to the mark. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the engraving, especially to the engraved initials and dates on the hinged cover. There is a split to the base where is attaches to the body. There is some bruising overall. The cover with some bruising so doesn't close tightly. The chasing on the lower body is later.

There is some discolouration and cracking to the ivory. There is a prominent bruise to the base of the teapot and a shallow bruise to the cream-jug.

There is some wear to the marks. The silver surface is tarnished in part. Top case with some fading/discolouration to the tortoiseshell. The enamel dial centre with a crack and scratches. An Edward VII Silver Copy of the Warwick Vase, by Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co. Ltd., London, 1901 of typical form, on square base, the sides cast with bacchic masks and thyrsus, all on a lion pelt-cast ground, with two reeded bifurcated branch handles, with egg and dart and beaded borders above a band of applied fruiting vines 21cm high, 30cm wide over handles, 63oz, 1,959gr The Warwick Vase, now in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow was discovered at Hadrian's Villa in the late 18th century by Gavin Hamilton, a Scottish art dealer in Rome. The vase was found on the villa's extensive grounds, which Hamilton had been given permission to excavate. It was in pieces when discovered and sold by Hamilton to Sir William Hamilton, British envoy at the court of Naples, and passed from him to his nephew George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick. The celebrated engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi made two etchings of the vase once its restoration was complete and published these engraving in his 1778 publication Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal Cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi, (Vases, candelabra, grave stones, sarcophagi, tripods, lamps, and ornaments designed and etched by Cavalieri Giovanni Battista Piranesi) which will no doubt have added to the fame of the vase.The Earl of Warwick had intended to sell the vase to the British Museum but the sale wasn’t to come to pass so he kept it at Warwick Castle where it remained until 1978 when it was sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York but before it could leave the country it was declared to be of national importance and so an export license was denied and the funds were instead raised for it to stay in the country. In the decades since it was discovered it was to prove a popular form for silversmiths to copy with many examples known from the beginning of the 19th century and through into the 20th century. Marked near lower handle junction on one side. Further stamped underneath with maker's mark. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall minor surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a very minor softening to the high points.
