A pair of George III mahogany hall chairsEach back carved with a dexter hand and arm in armour erect holding a broken spear proper and the motto 'Toujours Prest' under a coronet and surround by foliage, above a solid shaped seat raised on square tapering legs, 46cm wide, 42cm deep, 95cm high (18in wide, 16 1/2in deep, 37in high). Footnotes:The crest is that of Thomas Carmichael (1750-1811), Lord Carmichael and 5th Earl of Hyndford. He succeeded his father at his death in 1787 and held for the period 1787-1811. Pila were a key part of Roman military equipment and were used by the empire’s legionaries as throwing weapons preceding a charge which ended in close quarters combat. It is partially thanks to this type of spear that Rome was able to control an empire that reached from north-western Europe to the Near East and encompassed all the lands of the Mediterranean. The long socket is decorated with three raised ridgeds which encircle it horizonntally. Bronze weaponry production flourished in western Asia, the Aegean, and Mainland Greece from the 2nd millennium BC to about 700 BC, when it was gradually replaced by iron. Swords, spears, and arrows were important symbols of war in Greek Bronze Age societies and served as powerful reminders that authority rested in the hands of those who could earn it.
