People in the street saw her and were terribly worried about her falling, but somehow they got her back.' It introduced another line - humorous fantasy - and he developed it with gusto. It was to become a constant in so many purlieus of Carel Weight's world. 'That gave me an idea for a picture. I moved the scene to the outside of a pub, and substituted a young lad who'd climbed up the inn sign and perched himself precariously on top. He was causing great consternation not only to people in the pub but also among the crowd who'd gathered outside'. - see R.V. Weight, Carel Weight, 1994, page 21 The painting , for which this is the study, was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1933 (No 100) and was instrumental in securing the artist's first teaching job. The painter Henry Carr,, then head of Beckenham School of Art, saw it, liked it, and offered Weight a 2-day-a-week teaching position at the school, Weight accepted and continued to teach at Beckenham until called up for war service in 1942. - see Mervyn Levy, Carel Weight, 1986, page 45.

WW2 Period American Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Fairbairn-Sykes Commando fighting knife. A good and rare example of the pattern modelled on the British F-S Fighting Knife. Double edged spear point blade mounted into a Parkerised metal chequered cut grip, with oval cross guard. Housed in brown leather scabbard tailored with "pancake flipper" belt loop, both flipper and chape retaining most of the original green painted finish. GC clean condition. Housed in original dark brown leather scabbard with rounded Parkerised chape, retaining leather tangs, elasticised strap A/F. Blade length 17 cm. Domard and A.J. Depaulis for D.V. Denon, Jupiter seated facing on throne, rev. robed figure of Antwerp standing right, holding spear and caduceus, left foot on prow of ship, couped hand in field, 41mm, 33.30g (Bramsen 870; cf. CGMP p.71; BDM I, 559; Slg. Julius 2128; cf. iNumis MBS 48, 1213). Extremely fine £60-£80 --- Provenance: bt H.D. Rauch, July 2004 In a campaign that cost almost £8 million and was singularly unsuccessful, British troops, in deciding to seal the mouth of the river Scheldt to prevent the port of Antwerp being used as a base against them, occupied the disease-ridden island of Walcheren in September 1809, which had already cost the lives of many French troops earlier in the campaign. The French fleet was ordered to Antwerp and the city heavily reinforced; the British expedition was withdrawn after the loss of 4,000 men, almost all to disease. The Treaty of Schönbrunn, sometimes known as the Treaty of Vienna, was signed between France and Austria at Schönbrunn Palace near Vienna on 14 October 1809, two days after Napoléon narrowly survived an assassination attempt by Friedrich Staps, who refused to apologise to the Emperor and was killed by a firing squad three days later. As both engravers of this medal had not even become students at the École des Beaux-Arts at the time of the events commemorated on it, it is thought that the medal itself was not struck until a decade or more later (cf. Forrer, p.559).
