J G Smyth VC Won Victoria Cross 1915 in France. Piece Size 3 by 2 inches Personally Signed by J G Smyth VC Won Victoria Cross 1915 in France. After Repton, Jackie trained at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst 1911-1912 and played regularly for the Hockey and Soccer XIs and received his "Blue" for revolver shooting. He also won the Military History Prize and was commissioned on 24th August 1912 and sailed for India on the troopship Plassy in September, where he was attached to 1st Yorkshire at Sialkot. He transferred to 15th Ludhiana Sikhs on 5th November 1913 at Loralai, Baluchistan. When war broke out, the Battalion marched to Karachi, before sailing for Europe, arriving in Marseilles in September 1914. Jackie was promoted to Lieutenant on 24th November 1914 and the Battalion trained and acclimatised at Orleans before moving into the line at Richebourg, Festubert and Givenchy areas. Jackie was extremely lucky when an exploding minenwerfer buried him alive. He was dug out but was left with a hearing problem which affected him for the rest of his life. He also had a cigarette shot from out of his mouth at Windy Corner and a piece of shrapnel cut his neck on another occasion. Early in 1915 he was appointed Aide de Camp to Brigadier General Strickland, commanding the Jullundur Brigade, but returned to his Battalion when the Adjutant became a casualty. He was appointed Adjutant before the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915. In actions near Richebourg L'Avoue, Frnace, on May 18th, 1915, Lieutenant Smyth with a bombing party of 10 men, voluntarily undertook the duty, to supply ammunitions to comrades within 20 yards of the enemy's position. After the attempts of two other parties had failed, with eight having been killed or wounded, he succeeded in taking the munitions to the desired position with the aid of his last two men. Jackie was gazetted for the VC on 29th June 1915, and received the medal on 12th July 1915 at Buckingham Palace from King George V. He was also awarded the Russian Order of St George, 4th Class on 25th August 1915. The Battalion then moved to Egypt, landing at Ismailia in August 1915. In November it moved to Mersah Matruh by armed trawlers to take part in the Senussi Campaign in the Western Desert. The Battalion returned to India in February 1916 for duty on the North West Frontier. He was promoted to Captain and took part in the Mohmand Blockade on the North West Frontier from October to December 1916. He passed out at the top of the Staff School at Saugor in January 1918 and was appointed acting major on 20th June 1918 and Brigade Major of the Bombay-Deolali Brigade. Later he was Brigade Major of 43rd Indian Brigade at Lahore. On 21st October 1919 a convoy was attacked by a party of Mahsuds. He set off with 300 men of 9th Jats in Ford vans, supported by two armoured cars. They arrived within two hours. While the infantry got behind the Mahsuds, Jackie drove the armoured cars straight at them. The Mahsuds retreated. He was awarded the Military Cross for this action (LG 27th September 1920). It was also this action which saw the award of a posthumous VC to Henry Andrews. Details enclosed. Good condition Est.

This prestige staff showcases a pierced diamond shaped top terminal displaying two carved faces on either side, scalloped and chevron bands, the faceted shaft with diamond shapes to the grip; the wood very light in weight, Provenance: From the collection of Jean-Pierre Laprugne, Paris. Condition: Good overall, dark brown age related patina and wear, and a small crack on the grip. For a very similar example see the French museum: Musee du quai Branly, Inventory number: 70.2014.15.1 Probably functional war club associated with warlike and headhunting raids which were frequent, until the British pacification imposed at the end of the 19th century, between the Santa Isabel region and the New Georgia archipelago in the West. The detailed work of the motifs could suggest that this weapon could also have a ceremonial or prestige function in war dances intended to ensure, before departure, the success of the expedition. The visual impact of patterns is fundamental for the perception and effectiveness of oceanic objects. The crocodile motif is very frequently associated, in the west of the Solomon Islands, with the aggressive values implied by the practice of headhunting. We find this crocodile motif carved in a round shape on other masses or on large ceremonial plaques used in honor of the great headhunters after an expedition or even on decorative elements of war canoes. 82cm long. Good with some age related wear.

Approximately 6,800 were built during that time period, with the 1939/40 models being used as ambulances and staff cars in the RAF during WWII and is powered by a 25hp 3215cc straight-six engine which is derived from a Chevrolet unit, an engine shared with Vauxhall after it was acquired by GM in 1929. The Wingham Cabriolets were all finished with hand-made bodies by Martin-Walter of Folkestone. One of just five known survivors globally, this 1938 Vauxhall GY 25 Wingham Cabriolet was one of an extremely limited number of cars built on the Vauxhall Big Six chassis. This particular long-wheelbase Wingham Cabriolet only became available in 1938 and features an extended luggage boot, which, according to original promotional material, was “large enough to take suitcases, golf clubs etc.”Built by Vauxhall Motors in July 1938, as certified by Vauxhall Heritage, ‘XS 4714’, a Paisley number, is a very special car indeed – recently returned to the road after what was essentially a 50-year restoration, the last owner began restoring the car in 1973, when he sadly passed away and the restoration stalled. The car has had a fastidiously detailed restoration, which has just been finished off by a well-known and highly respected classic car dealer. All the repair and rectification work had been carried out in stages over the years ‘as and when’ the previous owner’s budget allowed, and to an exacting and diligent standard. The Vauxhall is 'Said' to have superb paint throughout, with no visible dents or damage and excellent brightwork, right down to the accurate Red and Blue Vauxhall badge and the original fluted bonnet, while the chassis is said to be 'Excellent' and the refurbished wheels are also in great order. The seats and door trims have been re-covered in Light Tan leather by Moore’s Classic Car Interiors of Aylsham, Norfolk. The centrepiece of the interior is its beautiful art deco four-dial dash. The quality of the trim is otherwise exceptional – new carpets, neatly retrimmed door cards and a beautiful and highly polished wooden dash. At the rear, the luggage area is spacious and well-equipped, with a new spare wheel cover. From the bespoke wooden cappings to the quirky full-opening chauffeur and bride doors, it’s a machine that truly celebrates the artisan nature of coach-built cars.Mechanically, the Wingham Cabriolet came with a 3.2-litre straight-six engine, the largest of the Big Six engines, and with a manual transmission, mechanically akin to the famous 30/ 98 Tourer. It has been extensively overhauled throughout with the engine, brakes, steering and suspension all seeing work. The weather equipment is also present. In total c.£230,000 has been spent completely restoring, replacing or refurbishing every area of the car possible. Now finished to a show-worthy standard 'XS 4714' is accompanied by numerous rare spares and a V5C Registration Document. XI, no. 2, Nov 1982, pp. 33-49.These extremely rare cards were designed and issued by Antonio Martorell and published by his studio and community art centre Taller Alacran. According to Dudley Ollis' note, Ollis was told by Louis Orzack that he (Orzack) had met Antonio Martorell and been presented with a pack of these cards. However shortly afterwards the police in Puerto Rico seized and destroyed all stocks of the cards. Orzack believed that the only packs still in existence were his own and a pack saved by the artist, which is now displayed in the Puerto Rico Museo de Arte de Ponce. Therefore this apparently escaped example, found by Dudley Ollis at a London antiques fair, would seem to be one of only three examples that have survived. The cards support the movement for independence from the United States. The Spanish word alacran means scorpion, and refers to the United States and its hold over the island. The four suits represent: coconut palms with fruit = New Progressive Party, hand with flag = Independentista movement, white star on red = Communist Party, profile head = Popular Democratic Party. This profile head is believed to be that of Governor Muñoz-Marin.

Tainui into Falmouth Harbour after she had been torpedoed and hit 75 miles west of St. Nazaire, 8 April 1918 British War and Mercantile Marine War Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaves (Richard A. Kelly); Lloyd’s Medal for Meritorious Services, 3rd type, silver (Captain Richard Alfred Kelly, S.S. “Tainui”, 8th April 1918.) nearly extremely fine (3) £500-£700 --- M.I.D. London Gazette 17 January 1919: ‘The King has been graciously pleased to give orders for the publication of the names of the following Officers and men of the Mercantile Marine in the London Gazette as having received an expression of commendation for their services ... Capt. Richard Alfred Kelly.’ Richard Alfred Kelly served as Master of the Shaw, Savill, & Albion Company’s S.S. Tainui (9,965 tons), and was awarded the Lloyd’s Medal for Meritorious Service, together with an Admiralty award of £100, for the following action: ‘While this vessel was about 75 miles west of St. Nazaire proceeding in convoy at 5:54 p.m. on 8 April 1918, the track of a torpedo was seen on the port bow. The engines were immediately put full astern and the torpedo passed ahead of the vessel. The engines had just been put full speed ahead again when a second torpedo was seen at close range approaching rapidly. This struck the vessel on the port side abreast of No. 1 hatch. The engines were at once stopped, and as the vessel was listing very heavily to port and settling by the head, the boats were manned and lowered at 5:57 p.m. The whole of the passengers and the greater portion of the Stewards’ staff were transferred to a destroyer which was standing by. The crew remained in the boats near the vessel. At 8:15 p.m. as she was still floating the Master ordered the crew to return; by 8:45 p.m. they were all on board with the exception of the crews of two boats which, owing to the darkness and the state of the sea, had lost touch with the vessel. They were subsequently picked up by the destroyer. Steam was raised at 11:35 p.m., and the engines put slow ahead in an attempt to reach Plymouth. It was found, however, that being so much out of trim, the vessel would not steer, and at 3:12 a.m. on 9 April the engines were put astern, the Tainui proceeding stern first. About 4:00 a.m. two patrol boats arrived and were given lines from aft, but they were found useless for towing purposes. One was then given a line from the bow to assist in steering, and the other was told to lead the way, as the compasses of the Tainui had been put out of action by the explosion. At 9:00 a.m. a tug arrived and took her in tow. At 11:45 a.m. it was decided to alter course for Falmouth, this being the nearest port. At 3:15 p.m. the Falmouth Pilot and port authorities boarded, and at 4:13 p.m. the vessel was beached inside the harbour. Nos. 1 and 2 holds were full, the water rose steadily in No. 3, and by the time she was beached there was 4 ft. 6 in. of water in the after end, although the pumps had been working the whole time. The Master state that the conduct of the Officers, Engineers, and Crew was excellent.’ Sold with copied research.
