World War II interest: Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) - a part smoked cigar from his voyage on HMS Duke of York 1941 and collected by the ships Chaplain Rev Robert Rowland Evans (Robin) (1900-1991), 9.5cm, accompanied by a hand written note 'smoked by the Rt Hon Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England, on board H.M.S. Duke of York, when on passage to the lease and lend conference in Washington December 1941. Embarked at Greenock'. (Sold as an historical object only)PROVENANCE: Reverend Evans was a twin and one of seven brothers and three sisters, who joined the ministry after leaving St Davids College Lampeter. His twin brother, Rev Daniel Ivor Evans, also joined the church and became Anglican Bishop of Argentina and the Falkland Islands. Much of the history of Rev Evans and the cigar is gleaned from a recording he made in 1991 of his recollections of HMS Duke of York / Pearl Harbour. (HMS Duke of York was a was a King George V class battleship laid down in 1937 and commissioned into the Royal Navy on November 4th 1941.)Rev Roberts was appointed Chaplain of HMS Duke of York in 1941 and remained with her for the duration of the war. He 'joined her at John Brown's Yard in the Clyde' and for the first month or so he states that the main duties were 'oversighting the Russian convoys'. However, 'events moved quickly in November 1941, for we had a buzz in the ship that she was going to America'. The ship sailed south and Rev Evans recalls 'We returned to Scarpa and we were barely there when the ship altered course and came south again when the Captain announced a disaster that which was taken very badly by our ships company....it was, um, a day of gloom and despair and we were barely south on the return journey when the disaster of Pearl Harbour occurred'. It was after this that he states that the ship moved to sail to America taking with them 'the Prime Minister of England and his Chiefs of Staff and military advisors'. He goes onto recount that a reserve officer from HMS Caroline came onboard to manage the War Room. While 'he and I were in conversation in the preparation, there suddenly appeared the Prime Minister followed immediately by some of his chiefs of staff. I remember vividly Sir Dudley Pound, First Sea Lord, arriving first and sitting himself down and followed by other Chiefs of staff which included CIGS Sir John Dill, Lord Portal and, I believe, the Chief Military advisor Canadian Government. It was certainly a moment of gloom. I felt "I'm in Court, out of my depth and certainly out of place" but as I made my move to make my exit the Prime Minister said to me "Please abide Padre" and I did for a moment or two and then edged my way out'.HMS Duke of York transported Churchill to America to meet with President Roosevelt after the attack on Pearl Harbour and Americas entry into World War II to support the allies. It was the ship that transported Churchill to the Arcadia Conference (Dec 22nd 1941 - Jan 12th 1942) where many key war decisions were made including the drafting of the Declaration by the United Nations which became the basis of the United Nations when it was founded in 1945.

Life-long Naval Career. A well known Newbury man Petty Officer William Harry deacon was 'Lost Overboard' from HMS Esk, while employed in Operations off the coast of Spain, during recent severe weather. He was the son of the Late Mr Charles Deacon, who kept a General shop at North Villa, Boundary Road, Newbury. He was aged 47. Petty Officer Deacon lost his life in the service to which he devoted his career. He joined the navy at the early age of 16 and after the usual training ship period, joined the Home Fleet. In 1910 he was drafted to the East Indies station, where he took part in the campaign to suppress Gun Running. For this he was awarded the Persian Gulf Medal and clasp, and he returned to England in 1913. Early in 1914 he joined the Destroyer HMS Hardy,m which was employed off the coast of Ireland, again supressing Gun Running At the Outbreak of War he was serving in the North Sea and his ship was badly damaged by enemy gun-fire at the Raid on Hartlepool. He was in the Battle of Jutland on board HMS Barham, and was in the thick of the battle, when over 60 men were killed. In 1917 he volunteered for Q Boats or Mystery Ships campaign against enemy Submarines. His ship was sunk but he was rescued and afterwards received the Distinguished Service Medal In 1920 he was lent to the Australian Navy and went in the new Destroyer Anzac to Australia, where he served for 2 1/2 years. Petty Officer Deacon rejoined the navy in July 1936, and only last Christmas came to Newbury on leave, to stay for a fortnight with his stepmother, Mrs Deacon of 5, Gilders Square. It was during manoeuvres off the Coast of Spain in Thursdays severe weather that he lost his life. Family provenance gives him washed overboard, whilst delivering a message to the bridge. A 1914/15 Star named to J3105 J E Deacon AB RN. British war & Victory Medals named to J3105 L Smn J E Deacon RN. Details from an original Newspaper Cutting. The brother of William Deacon he also has quite some service to relate. Seaman John Deacon who has recently been home on leave to visit his parents, has had an adventurous career for a young man of not more than 25 years. Joining the navy when quite a boy, he was sufficiently advanced to take part in patrol work in the early days of the war, and then at the time of the Gallipoli adventure, he was ordered to the Dardenelles. He was one of the survivors when the Irresistible was sunk, having been in the water for over half an hour. He afterwards joined a landing party on the Gallipoli coast, and was wounded in one of his legs, directly he landed on the beach, but this was disregarded as a small scratch. He went on and was afterwards brought down with another wound in the other leg, but he managed to carry on until the mission for which his party landed was accomplished. Returning to Headquarters where he found that only he and another man had survived the Turkish fire. Seeing that the above was Deacons first holiday, it would be agreed that he had finally merited the same. A 1914/15 Star named to PO 2952 Pte A Rendall RMLI. A Gaiety Girl appearing in 'The Girl on the Film' , when the son of the then worlds richest man Jay Gould USA fell for her. 5'.6" tall with a tremendous figure and attractive looks, he rushed backstage to meet her. Armed with flowers and a desire for her that was unstoppable, the romance began. Soon she was living in his townhouse on 74th Street, or at a 'Tudor Mansion' at Rye on the New York Coast. Another well known meeting place was on his moored yacht. It was not long before his then wife Edith, was told of the affair. Having lost her figure due to a strong liking for candy, she set about to lose some weight and win him back. A year after George was born, a sister Jane was born to himself and Guinevere. this to mutterings 'Another of Georges Bastards has been born'. Edith's attempts to lose weight knew no bounds, including Steam Baths, Golf every day on their private 9 hole course, also massages. One Sunday in November 1921, whilst playing golf with her husband she collapsed whilst teeing off on the 5th green. She made no sound as she fell and despite attempts to revive her including carrying her to the Casino for help. After some 20 minutes she was pronounced dead . Doctors pronounced her dead of a heart attack, beneath her clothing she was encased in a rubber suit. Described as being wrapped like a mummy. George now turned to Guinevere more than ever, they married in May of 1922 at Lakewood. Gossip followed them so they moved to first England, later to Scotland. They leased Castle Grant from the Earl of Seafield, fishing, shooting and playing golf. Within the year the holiday in France ended in tragedy, when George contracted and died of Pneumonia. His estate was originally set at $30 million dollars. He left his wishes for it to be split equally between his ten children. After a while his estate was set at $15 million dollars. It was further reduced to $5 million dollars. Soon the siblings were fighting for what was left. Law suits stating George and his two sisters were born out of wedlock, took their toll on the will of their Grandfather Jay Gould. Once considered the worlds richest man, law suits took their toll. Actions ran over four years, costing the then record $2.7 million dollars. After the settlement where they had reduced shares, Guinevere married the Viscount Dunsford, heir to the 1st Earl of Midleton, after his divorce from his wife Peggy. They moved to England and brought Eastwell Park in Kent, filling it with antiques and paintings. It was then decided George and his sisters, should take the name Brodrick (Midleton). George was entered into Eton where after arriving he excelled at most sports, filling the Mr Butterwicks House dining room sideboard with trophies. Described by Peter Carrington later Foreign Secretary, as an 'extraordinarily nice person, our No1 hero.' He later attended Trinity College Cambridge, arriving in a chauffeur driven new Bentley 4.2.litre sports. He payed an young gentleman to attend all the lectures, then provide him with comprehensive notes prior to his finals. He sailed through them! After graduating he joined the Irish Guards, serving in Egypt from late 1937. It was here he was commended for 'Gallant and distinguished conduct in operations against armed insurgents. When war broke out he was posted with his battalion to Norway, to eject the German Forces who had occupied Narvik. In May the battalion was embarked in the Polish vessel Chobry. On the 14th May Heinkels attacked and successfully bombed the ship, killing all the senior officers. The remaining 15 junior officers including Brodrick, to marshal the Guardsmen on to the Destroyer HMS Wolverine. In 16 minutes 694 officers and men were rescued. The Captain of the destroyer remarked later that the 'superb discipline of the Irish Guards' made the rescue possible. Transferred to the 3rd Battalion he was in 1945 awarded an MBE for his services, whilst on the staff of the Canadian 1st Army in N West Europe. He married Mhari nee Gourlay, in the Guards Chapel in 1940. After the war they settled at Eastwell and farmed some 3,000 acres. It was difficult after the Army having requisitioned it during the war. The put in a huge effort to get it running again, in returning the land to being productive. Guinevere died in 1976, two years later he and his family moved to Dunley Manor, where he served as a JP for 17 years. George died in 2004. War Services 1939-45. Born 15/4/15 Univ Cand. High Commanders of the RAF book, with a complete set of the 22 flown VIP signed covers inside. Includes Viscount Trenchard signed by his son, Sir Frederick Sykes signed by Dora Sykes, Sr J. Some of the most senior commanders of the Royal Air Force are already well known and have received considerable attention from historians and biographers. Little, however, has been written about most of those who have held the highest appointment the Service has to offer. The 22 biographies in this book include all 19 past Chiefs of the 3 Air Staff and three other very senior commanders. Drawn from a wide cross section of the nations talent, their varied careers reflect the history of the Service itself, in war time as well as in peace time. This account of the careers and achievements of some of the most outstanding men in the Service is based on Air Commodore Henry Proberts research in the extensive archives of the RAFs Air Historical Branch and on interviews with many of the commanders themselves. Each had to face different challenges and differing circumstances, from fighting for and building an air force, to leading that force in war and then preserving it, and this book shows how these distinctive individuals not only foresaw the potential of air power but enabled it to be realized to the full. Lot 172

BLUE AND WHITE 'SHEPHERDESS' RETICULATED DISHYONGZHENG/QIANLONG PERIOD finely painted with a shepherdess standing behind a gnarled tree and holding a shepherd's staff, beside three goats, the scene enclosed within a reticulated border21.5cm diamHappy Marriage of East and WestThe present lot demonstrates a fascinating blending of Western and Eastern art in that it combines the traditional Chinese 'three goats' motif with the popular shepherdess theme in European iconography. 'Three Goats', as in the idiom 'San Yang Kai Tai' (Three goats herald a new beginning), have been a symbol of good fortune in China since antiquity. Shepherds and shepherdesses, on the other hand, were the dominant figures in 17th and 18th century European pastoral paintings, especially portraiture. It was in vogue for aristocratic and wealthy patrons to have themselves portrayed as shepherds and shepherdesses to express their longing for Arcadia. Although 'shepherdess and flock' depictions are common in 18th century Chinese export porcelain, the present dish is quite unique in the way it employs chiaroscuro to generate a strong sense of plasticity. The same degree of three-dimensionality can only be found on ink paintings and reverse glass paintings directly influenced by Western missionary painters working in the Imperial Court, most prominently Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining, 1688-1766). It may not be too far-fetched to say that the anonymous painter of the present dish, just like his contemporaries working in other mediums, was a follower of Castiglione, even if remotely.
