Ambrosius Benson, um 1495 Mailand – um 1550 BrüggeBILDNIS DES HEILIGE HIERONYMUS MIT GEISSELÖl auf Holz.64 x 48 cm.In vergoldetem Rahmen mit seitlichen Säulen.Beigebeben eine Expertise von Till-Holger Borchert, umfassende Vergleichsbeispiele nennend, in Kopie, Liège, 23.5.2023.Die Heiligengestalt wird mit halbentblößtem Oberkörper und mit einer Geißel in der Hand gezeigt. Das Bildthema stellt den Heiligen als Büßer dar. Diese Art der Selbstkasteiung geht einerseits auf die Geißler-Bewegung der Jahrhunderte davor zurück, die versucht hatte damit die Pest abzuwenden. Andererseits wird Hieronymus aufgrund seiner Biografie stets auch als Büßer gezeigt, sowohl mit Geißel als auch mit einem an die Brust geschlagenen Stein. In diesem Sinne ist das Gemälde als ein Andachtsbild zu verstehen, das den Gläubigen zur Selbstbuße mahnen soll. Dementsprechend wirkt auch der auf den Betrachter gerichtete Blick auffordernd. Er hält einen Stein und ein Holzkreuz mit naturalistisch gemaltem Corpus Christi, während seine linke Hand auf einen Schädel gelegt ist. Als weiteres Attribut ist der große Kopf eines dunkelhaarigen Löwen in der linken Ecke zu sehen, sein Kardinalshut am rechten Bildrand. Die Gestalt hebt sich hell beleuchtet vor dem dunklen Hintergrund ab, der seine Einsiedlerhöhle andeutet. Links oben ist der Ausblick in eine hügelige Landschaft gegeben, mit einem kleinen Kirchengebäude. Ein identischer Bildaufbau findet sich in einem weiteren Gemälde des Künstlers, welches in die erste Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts datiert wird und sich im Koninklijke Museum voor Schone Kunsten van Belgie in Brüssel befindet. Das thematisch vergleichbare Werk, mit den Maßen 86,5 x 65,5 cm, wurde 2009 bei Bonhams London versteigert und stammte aus der ehemaligen Sammlung Roger Duterme 1969. Im Gegensatz zu dem vorliegenden Gemälde fehlt dort die Geißel, stattdessen hält der Dargestellte nur den Stein. Zudem ist die Landschaft dort ohne Kirche, der Löwenkopf wird weit schematischer gezeigt. A.R.Benson scheint lombardischer Herkunft zu sein, war jedoch ab 1518 als Meister in Brügge tätig und trat als Mitarbeiter in die Werkstatt von Gerard David (um 1460-1523) ein. Als einer der wichtigsten flämischen Maler zwischen Spätgotik und Renaissance, neben Gerard David (um 1460-1523) und Adriaen Isenbrant (1480-1551), feierte Benson große Erfolge und seine Exporte reichten bis nach Spanien und Portugal.Provenienz:Christie’s, London, April 2012. Teilparkettiert.69,5 x 51,5 cm.In verziertem Ädikularahmen.Vor einer aus mehreren Steinplatten aufeinanderliegenden Wand an einem Felsentisch stehend wiedergegeben, die Heilige Maria Magdalena im Dreiviertelbildnis. Sie hält ihre Arme mit den langen zarten Fingern vor der Brust über Kreuz, während das Lockenhaar den nackten Oberkörper bedeckt. Sie hat rötliche Lippen und mit ihren hellbraunen Augen blickt sie aus dem Bild auf den Betrachter hinaus. Vor ihr auf dem Stein befindlich das grau-silberne Salbgefäß mit Deckel. Um ihr Haupt trägt sie einen dünnen schmalen goldenen Nimbus, zudem sind ihre langen Haare mit zahlreichen goldfarbenen Strähnen versehen.
