MATTEY, PARIS, FRANCE; an early 20th century mahogany cased tabletop stereoscope viewer, hand-cranked, cartridge-fed mechanism, with manufacturer's label to the front inscribed 'Unis France', and movement maker's mark for 'A Mattey, Paris, France' to the interior, 52 x 26.5 x 29.5cm.Condition Report: Appears good, the light inlet screen has a slight crack to the bottom left, a few bits of wear in places, but only commensurate with age. Otherwise good, works perfectly.Cassette frame damaged
Approximately 450 glass stereoscope slides, the majority of the images relating to WWI France, showing artillery, inside bunkers/shelters, troops, barbed wire battlefields, aeroplanes including crashed German examples, many Red Cross, bombed landscapes, troops marching, tanks in ditches, many troops wearing Adrian-style helmets, also many depicting a high class family partaking in Highland games and pursuits, including skiing, Highland Games, golf, polo, fishing, etc, a total of nineteen cartridges, each containing approximately twenty stereoscope slides, mounted on four trays.Condition Report: Some are amazingly clear, with good 3D imagery, however some examples are badly worn.
