Very interesting late 18th century violin attributed to the Landolfi School, Milan circa 1790, labelled Antonius Stradivarius..., the two piece back of fine faint curl with similar wood to the sides, the head of plainish wood, the table of a fine width grain slightly widening to the flanks and the varnish of a light reddish-brown colour on a golden ground, 13 15/16", 35.40cm, two bows, case - **This violin is sold with two insurance valuations from Edward Smith (formerly of J & A Beare for £17500 dated 18th August 2006 and for £35000 dated 30th October 2006) *There is also a repair receipt from Edward Smith dated 18th August 2006

A quantity of ephemera relating to Ralph Powell, former conductor and musical director at the Hippodrome Wolverhampton until it was destroyed by fire in 1956. He dealt in stringed instruments and at one point was the only person to own two Stradivarius violins, one of which he played on The Queen Mary liner on route to the USA where he was delivering the instrument to a buyer in Chicago. The Powells were a very musical family and were at one time a family orchestra. The lot contains programmes, photographs including some showing the fire damage to the Hippodrome, contracts, references etc
