Vereker, M.C.', Country Life, 21 October 1939, p. 422, fig. 11 This 19th century ottoman stool was in the collection of the 7th Viscount Gort, photographed in 1939 by Country Life in one of the bedrooms at Hamsterley Hall. It is almost certainly inspired by Italian baroque furniture of the 17th century. The reclining male figures relate to a design for a side table by Fillipo Passarini, published in Nuove inventioni d'ornamenti (1698) (E. Colle, Il mobile barocco in Italia. Arredi e decorazioni d'interni dal 1600 al 1738, Milan, 2000, p. 86), and a carved giltwood side table with similar figures, dating to the end of the 17th century, is in the Galleria Colonna, Rome (A. Y A GEORGE III MAHOGANY, SYCAMORE AND SATINWOOD PEMBROKE TABLEATTRIBUTED TO HENRY KETTLE, CIRCA 1775Centred with a marquetry rose, the drawer with a sliding leather inset writing surface69cm high, 51cm wide, 92cm wide with the leaves raised, 68cm deepThis fine Pembroke table, in the manner of Hepplewhite, closely relates to an example by cabinet maker Henry Kettle, supplied to John Parker the younger, later Lord Boringdon for the saloon at Saltram, Devon (Illustrated in C.Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, fig. 543, p.289). A further related table, also in the manner of Henry Kettle, finished with a harewood ground and shaped panels to the leaves, is illustrated in P. Broome, The Hyde Park Collection, Hong Kong, 1985, p.191.Henry Kettle's known career began when he was taken into partnership with the cabinet-maker William Henshaw around 1770 whose workshops were at 18 St. Paul's Church Yard. Kettle continued solely at this address from circa 1774 when he took over the firm of Philip Bell at 23 St. Paul's Church Yard, the address from which he appears to have centred his business from around 1777. He is also discussed in G. Wills 'Some Labelled Furniture at Saltram', Furniture History, Leeds, 1966, vol.II, p.37 (pl.XIX).Closely related examples, all also fitted with the same unusual form of castors, were sold: Christie's, New York, Important English Furniture, 17th October 2003, Lot 230 ($26,290). Some ageing and wear to the tasselled trim, detached, missing and fragmented in areas.The upholstery has a cartouche shaped needlework panel to the chair back and an oval needlework panel to the seat cushion, both worn and with repairs and later set into later woolwork to make them fully fit the relevant areas. The inner sides and tops of the arms with sections of woolwork, with plaited woolwork trim. The Zebra like stripes of the timber, combined with brass inlay, helped to earn the firm royal patronage and private commissions, becoming one of the most famous cabinet makers in Regency London. In 1801 the Journal des Luxus und der Moden speaks of 'everyone of taste and discrimination making their purchases at Oakley's, the most tasteful of London's cabinet'.The use of calamander, triple line brass inlay and six point brass inlaid stars with circular ebony centres are all features seen on Oakley's recorded work.See Margaret Jourdain, Regency Furniture, p.51, 'From a manuscript inventory of the furniture supplied by George Oakley in 1810 for Papworth Hall, Cambridgeshire...the account includes the more important pieces ...
