By this time, there were already five Tavannes Watch Company factories in Switzerland and it had become the fourth largest watch manufacturer in the world, producing over 4,000 watches a day. After the Second World War, and with over 300 patents obtained for mechanical and automatic timepieces, Tavannes produced movements for most of the famous Swiss brands including Patek Philippe, Zenith and Jaeger LeCoultre. Many of these innovations are still used today. In 2008 the company was relaunched, and in 2018 a new ‘La Captive Belt Watch’ was announced. The new design allows the timepiece to be worn as a wrist watch, golf belt watch or a desk watch, all inspired by the history and design of this original timepiece.

Wenger SA, to an integral slightly tapering mesh link bracelet terminating in a liveried three stage fold over clasp with safety catch, overall length 18.5cm, gross weight 79.5g The mid 1970s saw the start of the ‘quartz revolution’ for the world’s watch industry, and Japan initially led the way in terms of expertise, innovation and more importantly, sales. The Swiss watch industry reacted by introducing quartz models of their own and many proudly displayed the word ‘quartz’ on the dial to show potential buyers they were buying the very latest technology. Rolex, for example, introduced the ‘Oysterquartz’ and the wording on the dial of this example also shows buyers that this prestige watch contains a quartz movement. As buyers retuned to the mechanical versions of these Swiss watches, companies started removing the word ‘quartz’ from the dial, and today it is rarely seen on timepieces of this calibre. It is not uncommon for retailers to add their own branding to watch dials, as with this example. Chronometrie Beyer is an exclusive watch retailer located in the heart of Zürich in Switzerland. The partnership between Patek Philippe and Beyer is a long standing one, and in 2011 Beyer opened the first retailer-managed Patek Philippe boutique in Switzerland.

1903 Humber Olympia Tandem Forecar Registration no. BJ 2513 Chassis no. 100642 Engine no. B558•One of the earliest surviving Humbers•Restored in 2000•London to Brighton eligible•Also eligible for the Pioneer Run and Banbury RunFootnotes:With a background in bicycle manufacture, Humber entered motor vehicle production as early as 1896, displaying motorcycles at The International Horseless Carriage Exhibition that year, these machines being powered by Pennington 2hp engines. Humber later built Léon Bollée engines under licence, and in 1902 acquired the rights to build Phelon & Moore engines. The forecar design enjoyed a long vogue among various manufacturers, lasting until around 1907. The production of Humber vehicles was carried on at both Beeston, Nottingham, and at Coventry, there being some considerable rivalry between the two factories, the Beeston works being reserved generally for production of the more expensive models.'The 'Humber Olympia' motor tandem is an ideal vehicle for two riders. All control is in the hands of the rear rider while the passenger is in the front, out of reach of dust and the exhaust gases, and conversation is easy. The front seat is most comfortably hung on springs and is excellently upholstered, luxurious to even the most delicate. The steering is unaffected by the absence or the presence of a passenger, and is easier than that of an ordinary tricycle.' Thus did Humber describe their 1903 offering, which came with a price tag of £75, or £21 11s 3d deposit and twelve monthly payments of £5 8s 0d. The single-cylinder air-cooled engine was built under Phelon & Moore licence. Purchased from Robert Thomas (Partsmade), this tandem forecar is one of the earliest surviving Humbers. The vehicle's earliest known owner is one A Foley, a resident of Norwich, to whom it belonged in the 1950s, and there is a photograph on file of the Humber being ridden circa 1910 showing the registration 'BJ 2513'. Also in the history file are photographs showing various stages of its restoration (carried out in 2000); sundry bills for work carried out; miscellaneous papers; Pioneer and VCC certificates; and a V5C document. Noteworthy features include a 'Wheel of Life' chain and a Longuemare carburettor. While with the current owner the Humber has participated in two Pioneer Runs and various local rallies. Described by the vendor as in very good condition throughout, this Beeston-built Humber (as identified by the engine number's 'B' prefix) is eligible not only for the prestigious London to Brighton Veteran Car Run but also for the equally prestigious Sunbeam MCC's Pioneer Run from Epsom to Brighton, and the VMCC's Banbury Run. Fabric upholstery.Numbered 000004 on the back.Measurements: 98 x 71 x 85 cm (armchair) and 42 x 55 x 32 cm (ottoman).Inspired by the subtle and elegant forms of Hans Wegner's popular Papa Bear chair, the Danish design duo Ib Madsen and Acton Schübell offer us an unusual variant of their previous model Pragh. Thus, the armchair in question has been built with the same legs and armrests as the Pragh, but with a different backrest design similar to that of a lounge chair.Born in Copenhagen, the designer tandem formed by Ib Madsen and Ib Schübell managed to captivate the most demanding collectors of vintage furniture. Their story began in 1944, when Arnold Madsen, an upholsterer by trade, was faced with the difficulty of finding a cabinetmaker who could do the joinery for a particular armchair based on a small plaster model he had made. It was then that Henry Schübell, a carpenter, managed to produce the wooden frame so that the chair could be put into production. Arnold Madsen was so impressed by his work that he suggested that they form a partnership in which Henry Schübell would design and produce the furniture, which Arnold Madsen would then upholster and market. The workshop was established in the city centre of Copenhagen, in a backyard, Gothersgade 158B. Their joint venture was called "Madsen & Schübell". Their models, halfway between the Scandinavian design tradition of the 20th century and futuristic fantasy, were characterised by a two-tone colour scheme that eschewed stridency in favour of a play of planes and volumes.

Lot 651

1925 Triumph 550cc Model SD & Gloria SidecarRegistration no. PR 5358Frame no. 312873Engine no. 104127 10R•An older restoration•Part of a private museum collection since 2011•Kept on static display•Requires re-commissioningThe first Triumph motorcycle of 1902 used a Belgian Minerva engine but within a few years the Coventry firm - originally a bicycle manufacturer founded by German immigrants Siegfried Bettman and Maurice Schulte - was building its own power units. The first of these - a 298cc single-cylinder sidevalve - arrived in 1904. This first engine was not without its weaknesses: pistons and bores wore out quickly and the curious 'tandem downtube' frame in which it was installed broke, but these shortcomings were soon sorted and within a couple of years 'Triumph' was a byword for reliability. The company was soon involved in racing, and the publicity generated by competition success - Jack Marshall won the 1908 Isle of Man TT's single-cylinder class for Triumph having finished second the previous year - greatly stimulated sales. By the outbreak of The Great War the marque's reputation for quality and reliability was well-established, leading to substantial orders for 'Trusty Triumphs' for British and Allied forces. Triumph's famous 3½hp model first appeared in 1907. Originally of 453cc, its sidevalve engine was enlarged to 476cc in 1908, and finally to 499cc in 1910 before being superseded by the 4hp (550cc) model in 1914. Equipped with three-speed Sturmey-Archer gearbox, it was Triumph's revised 4hp - the Model H - that did such sterling service in WWI, some 30,000 'Trusty Triumphs' seeing action with Allied forces. Up-dated with chain final drive for 1920, it became known as the 'SD' (Spring Drive) because of its clutch-mounted coil-spring shock absorber, and formed the basis of the later four-valve Ricardo model.Restored at some point, this beautifully presented Triumph motorcycle combination (featuring Triumph's own Gloria sidecar) has formed part of a private museum collection since 2011. Kept indoors on static display, the machine will require re-commissioning before returning to the road. An ideal mount for next year's Banbury Run. JORDI DALMAU (Santa Coloma de Gramanet, Barcelona, 1957) and LIDIA GÓRRIZ (Santa Coloma de Gramanet, Barcelona, 1957 and 1961)."Portar del lloc l'olor de pols i de viatge", 1991.Mixed media on canvas.Signed, dated and titled on the back.Measurements: 162 x 130 cm.Jordi Dalmau and Lidia Górriz, born in Santa Coloma in 1957 and 1961 respectively, are doctors in Fine Arts and multidisciplinary artists. They were neighbours in the same street, a neighbourhood that gave rise to this unusual couple dedicated to the creation of projects on the critique of the image and representation. Provocation, reflection, interrogation and collision of the codes of the art world itself and its parallels with media society generate their visual discourse. They work as a team forming a creative tandem; their artistic personality is characterised by a constant process of open research, where concepts and contents take on a fundamental character. Their acid and deeply critical vision coexists under an appearance of fictitious normality. Committed work and ethical radicalism are shown as the basis of the conflict between the discourses of art and its fissures. We could say that the provocation between superimpositions and interrogations of codes, the irony and criticism of the art world itself or its parallels with media society, as well as the journalistic tone of recent or past history, generate part of the discourse, giving it meanings.
