Notes: the 2/4th battalion landed at Suvla Bay, on the Gallipoli Peninsular on on August 10th 1915, and by December 13th of the same year they were evacuated and moved to Egypt. The tankard is likely a presentation piece given to a solider of the battalion in recognition of his service. Approximately 9cm wide across the rim (not including the handle), with a height of 13cm. A WW2 era Royal Navy interest pewter tankard, awarded to a ‘Captin ‘Arris’, which is presumed to be Lt Commander Alan Moir Harris (1901-1954) of HMS Penelope. The tankard is engraved to ‘Captin ‘Arris from his pirates ALSTER April 12th-June 5th 1940. The inscription relates to the taking of the German cargo ship ‘Alster’, which was captured by the Royal Navy ship HMS Penelope off the coast of Norway. The ship was carrying iron ore to one of its bases, before being taken by the British. A hand written note with the tankard is from the wife of a Royal Navy man (unclear if this is Harris?), and it describes him going aboard Alster with a prize crew, and ultimately bringing the vessel back to England. The tankard was seemingly presented to the Captain by the prize crew to mark the occasion. It’s known that Harris was a keen golfer (mentioned in his service record) and coincidentally the tankard has a glass bottom etched with ‘19th Hole’, a common joke that refers to the bar at the end of a round of golf. Approximately 11.4cm wide across the base, with a height of 12.5cm. Condition: good. Normal age patination to the pewter, but no splits or dents.
