An Early XX Century Oak Cased Tantalus, with brass carrying handles and mounts, the front section opening to reveal compartments and two drawers, containing three square from cut glass decanters and stoppers, 36cm high.One decanter with large chip another with a small chip, all decanters with some scratching to base, all stoppers loose. General age related wear throughout, scratching and small chips/ nibbles to wood all over, crack to wood at back left bottom corner, some wear to brass, key present - see images.
SILVER PLATED THREE PIECE TANTALUS, fitted with three cut glass decanters and stopperstantalus 36cm wideThere is an element of silver plate missing, mainly at the base of each bottle slot, as shown in the images. The bottles do not appear to be moulded, as they have no distinct moulding lines, but this is somewhat unclear. The hinged handle works well, and the bottles fit snuggly.

Here, Casson depicts a gruesome dinner. Zeus' son, Tantalus, offered his son as a sacrifice where he served him at a dinner. The other gods in attendance were wary of the meal but Demeter ate the boy's shoulder unknowingly before he was brought back to life, as she was distracted by loss of her daughter Persephone.
James Whittle (Goldsmith) of Blackburn Oak cased tantalus with silver plated metal mounts, encasing three cut glass decanters and stoppers, with label to the central compartment, tantalus 35cm wide x 33cm high approx overall including the handle, 13cm deep Surface dust, dirt and scratches overall, consistent with age and use. Two of the stoppers are chipped. One of the decanters are chipped. Would benefit from a gentle clean. The lock comes with a key. It does work but the mechanism is slightly stiff. Some small losses to the base/corners of the tantalus itself.
