Arqueta sículo-árabe. Sicilia, s.XII-XIII.En marfil con decoración tallada de motivos geométricos y alma de madera. Tapa pirámide truncada con bisagras, aldabón y placa de cierre en cobre dorado. Se conservan restos de tela en tonalidad burdeos en el interior. Durante la dominación árabe en Sicilia se crea el emirato de Sicilia incorporando la tradición del trabajo de los marfiles que recuerdan las piezas realizadas en Al-Ándalus en el califato Omeya. Son comunes las cajas y botes en marfil con cerraduras, bisagras y cantoneras decoradas con motivos típicamente musulmanes, como pájaros, animales y motivos geométricos. Según Ángel Galán y Galindo "Desde principios del siglo XII comienzan las peregrinaciones a Tierra Santa, las antiguas cajas matrimoniales musulmanas de venta en los zocos habrían sido pronto descubiertas por los peregrinos que desde Sicilia embarcaban a Tierra Santa con la pretensión adicional de obtener allí reliquias, más o menos auténticas, para donar a Iglesias y Monasterios de sus paises de origen. Los recipientes de marfil, cajas y arquetas, resultaban atractivos y ricos para esta finalidad por su color y decoración". Worn during 'sing sings,' traditional ceremonies, together with body paint and body jewellery.
