A Dolland of London leather bound telescope, mid 19th century, the tube engraved "Presented To Captain Robert Pollock By The Passengers Of The Ship Plantagenet 1854", the leather binding enclosing a panel depicting naval signal flags, 64.5cm long unextended (at fault) NOTE: The Plantagenet sailed from Southampton on 16 April 1854 and arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney, Australia on 28 July 1854 CONDITION REPORT:The image through the telescope is indistinct, suggesting that at least one of the eyepiece lenses requires cleaning. The brass object lens housing is loose and slides off the tube. The leather tube binding and brass fittings show expected wear. The flag chart and its protective panel show some yellowing.

SINGLE-DRAW MARINE TELESCOPE BY RAYMENT, LONDON, CIRCA 1820the tapered eyecup with dust slide, signed by the eyepiece as per title, leather-covered main tube with inset mercantile flag chart, splash cuff and lens cuff -- 19½in. (49.5cm.) closed Optics in good condition. Flags a little dirty. Protective covering missing in places. Leather dry and starting to split.
A 2IN. THREE-DRAW TELESCOPE BY ROSS, LONDON, OWNED BY CAPT. CHRISTOPHER CRADOCK, R.N., CIRCA 1901signed as per title and numbered 24745 and inscribed Captain Cradock, Hartforth, Richmond, Yorks, tapering leather-covered main tube with splash cuff and lens cuff, contained in leather case of issue with strap -- 11in. (28cm.) long (cased)Captain, later Rear-Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock (1862-1914) was a consummate and very brave naval officer who was close to the Royal Family and saw service on the Royal Yacht. In 1914 he was assigned a scrappy, obsolete squadron and ordered to hunt down Admiral Graf Spee in the modern Scharnhorst. The resulting Battle of Coronel was annihilation for Cradock aboard the Good Hope whose ships only landed two hits on the Germans, none of which caused damage and he and 926 men were sunk attempting to ram the Germans. Cradock was born at Hartforth and made a captain on 18th April 1901 when it is presumed he acquired this telescope. By 1914 it would have been superseded by modern prismatic binoculars.

A RARE MINIATURE SILVER AND COPPER YATATE (PORTABLE WRITING SET) UnsignedJapan, 19th centuryPublished: Chappell, Sharen & Welch, Matthew (1999) Netsuke: The Art of Miniature Carving, no. 252.The miniature yatate consisting of a pumpkin-shaped inkwell with a hinged lid and knop fitted with kiku-shaped roundels, the tubular section containing a removable telescope brush.LENGTH 6 cmCondition: Very good condition, minor surface wear.Provenance: Ex-collection Richard R. Silverman, purchased from Asahi, Tokyo, in 1973. Richard R. Silverman (1932-2019) was a renowned Asian art collector with one of the largest private collections of netsuke outside of Japan. He lived in Tokyo between 1964 and 1979 and began to collect netsuke there in 1968. Since the 1970s, he wrote and lectured about netsuke and was an Asian art consultant for Christie's, Sotheby's, and Bonhams. His gift of 226 ceramic netsuke to the Toledo Museum of Art constitutes perhaps the largest public collection of these miniature clay sculptures in the world. After moving to California, Silverman became a member of the Far Eastern Art Council at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1984. In 1993, he joined LACMA's Executive Board. He served on the board of directors for the International Society of Appraisers from 1986 to 1994 and served nine years as chair for the City of West Hollywood Fine Arts Commission. Richard Silverman was posthumously awarded the Order of the Rising Sun for his decades-long promotion of Japanese culture.
