The "Gugnunc" was the name given to a two-seat biplane designed by Handley-Page to compete in the Guggenheim Safe Aircraft Competition in the U.S.A. in October 1929: it was acquired by the R.A.F. in 1930. BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Historical Medals, Rowing, Magdalen College Boat Club, Oxford, a group of three similar Copper Medals, awarded 1862-1864, to E B Michell, Magdalen Tower and bridge, legend in garter around, rev legend in wreath, named on edge, “Challenge Pairs. 1862. E. B. Michell. Bow. H. B. Middleton. Stroke; E.B.Michell. Sculls. 1863; Pairs. 9th March 1864 – J.G.Gambell. Bow. E.B.Michell. Stroke.”, 51mm. Good extremely fine. (3) Magdalen Boat Club was founded in 1828 and is, as their web-site tells us, “older than Belgium”. E. B. Michell, a famous oarsman and all-round sportsman, frowned on by the press for racing without a shirt, a habit that may have come from his boxing days, being also the holder of the English title at three different weights. He won the Diamond Sculls at Henley in 1865. He was the co-author (c.1890) of Fencing..... with a complete bibliography of the art.....; Boxing.....; Wrestling, and went on to buy Wimbledon for the Lawn Tennis Association. Magdalen Boat Club recently purchased a silver Foundationers’ Four medal for 1860, with H. B. Middleton named as No. 2.
