Travel poster des. by P.L. Brenot, ca. 1959. Col. lithogr., 52.5 x 33 cm. Switzerland, S.A Lith. Klausfelder Vevey. Signed in the plate bottom left. This poster was issued to promote summer travel to Switzerland and depicts a young woman in a bathing suit in front of the Chillon Castel and Lake Geneva. Poyaisian land grant certificates for 200, 250 and 400 acres, all signed by Sir Gregor MacGregor. Text in English and French, w. elaborate coat of arms depicted at top center, featuring English and Scottish flags. Folded, some browning/ foxing as usual. MacGregor (1786-1845) was a Scottish soldier, adventurer and con man who attempted to draw British and French investors and settlers from 1821 to 1837 to "Poyais", a fictional Central American territory (declared to be in present-day Honduras and Nicaragua) that MacGregor claimed to rule as "Cazique". Hundreds invested their savings in these supposed Poyaisian government bonds and land certificates, and about 250 people emigrated to MacGregor's invented country in 1822-23 to find only an untouched jungle; more than half of them died. MacGregor's Poyais scheme has been called one of the most brazen and elaborate cons in history. Fascinating pieces of history from a famous con man. (total 3)

Satirical map of the First World War in Europe. Ryozo Tanaka. Tokyo, Shobido & Co., 1914. 39 x 55 cm. Text in both English and Japanese. Rare Serio-comic map showing the political relations during World War I, shortly after the Chinese Revolution, from the Japanese point of view. This map was designed and printed by Tanaka Ryozo (1874-1946), who ran a print shop in central Tokyo and later became well known for producing prints of works by prominent modern woodblock artists. Although it is described as 'map of the world', it is really a map of Europe, Asia and part of North Africa. The US is interestingly shown as a man in a top hat looking at Asia through a telescope from a small patch of land that appears to be somewhere in the middle of the Pacific. The rest of North and South America and all of Australia and New Zealand are missing. The colourful and decorative map cleverly depicts each country as an animal, or more rarely as a human figure, giving an intriguing insight into Japanese perceptions of the state of the world (and some Japanese prejudices about neighbouring countries!) at the start of World War I.

A FOUR-METRE LONG TAXIDERMY INDIAN PYTHON SHOT BY SIR ANNESLEY DE RENZY SURGEON GENERAL OF THE INDIAN ARMY, The python was shot by Sir Annesley De Renzy, who came across the snake at a jungle edge constricting a monkey in circa 1880. The line drawing in the book 'A Naturalist on the Prowl' 1894 is said to have been inspired by the this event. A RARE 19TH CENTURY VISITOR'S BOOK WITH EXTRAORDINARY MONOLOGUE BY GIDEON ALGERNON MANTELL (1790-1852) AND SIGNED BY CHARLES WATERTON (BRITISH, 1865 - 1782), AMONGST MANY OTHERS, With hand painted illustrations and drawings. Probably from Yorkshire country house. The entry written by Gideon Algernon Mantell, geologist and palaeontologist, Chester Square, Pimlico, December 1849: 'If I have been so fortunate as to kindle in the hearts of others, that intense desire for the acquisition of natural knowledge which I feel in my own: - or have illumined the mental vision with that intellectual light, which once kindled can never be extinguished, and which reveals to the soul the beauty and wisdom, and harmony of the works of the Eternal. I shall indeed rejoice for then my exertions will not have been in vain and although my humble name may be soon forgotten, and all record of my labour be effaced. Yet the influence of that knowledge which has emanated from my researches will endure forever, and by conducting to new an inexhaustible fields of inquiry, prove a never failing source of the most pure and elevated gratification. For to one imbued with a taste of natural science, Nature unfolds her hoarded poetry and her hidden spells: for him there is a voice in the winds, and a language in the wave, and he is ...even as one... Who by some secret gift of soul or eye. In envy spot beneath the smiling sun. See's where the springs of living writers lie!' Signed 'Gideon Algernon Mantell'.

Unique, Important dagger Elisabeth Charlotte Palatine Duchesse d'Orleans, France, 1670s. Straight double-edged blade, decorated with perforations, engravings and gold inlay. Handle carved from bone, guard made from bone and horn, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and semi-precious stones. At the top of the handle is the description I.N.R.I. (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). A magnificent 17th century Baroque scabbard decorated with carved mother-of-pearl, bone, turquoise, corals, carnelian and enamel. At the top of the scabbard there is an insert with the inscription "Elisabeth Charlote" and at the bottom there is an insert with the inscription "Palatine Duchesse d'Orleans" between them there is a portrait of a young woman. On the reverse side of the scabbard, mother-of-pearl inserts depict a gallant scene depicting a young woman accompanied by a man under the rays of the sun. This was probably a gift to Elisabeth Charlotte Palatine from Louis XIV. Madame Elizabeth Charlotte, Duchess of Orleans ( born Princess Elizabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate, 27 May 1652 Ð 8 December 1722), also known as Liselotte von der Pfalz, was a German member of the House of Wittelsbach who married into the French royal family.Liselotte became very close to her brother-in-law Louis XIV. He was "...enchanted by the fact that this was an extremely witty and lovely woman, that she danced well...". He was often quite amused by her open, humorous and refreshingly uncomplicated nature. They often went hunting togetherÑa rather unusual occupation for a noble lady of the time. Her habit of going for long walks was also noticed by the French court and was initially mocked (she even went for a walk in the park at night) but the King was delighted: "The King used to say: il n'y a que Vous qui jouisses des beautes de Versailles (you are the only one who enjoys the beauties of Versailles)."Liselotte not only became the ancestress of the House of Orleans, which came to the French throne with Louis Philippe I, the so-called "Citizen King" from 1830 to 1848, but also became the ancestress of numerous European royal families, so she was also called the "Grandmother of Europe". Through her daughter she was the grandmother of Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, the husband of Maria Theresa, and great-grandmother of Joseph II and Leopold II (both Holy Roman Emperors) and Marie Antoinette, the last Queen of France before the French Revolution. Provenance: Castle Ahlden (Germany)A unique relic worthy of being in the collection of the best museums in the world.Height: 47 cm;
The Chinese Executioner Swords. East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty, Boxer Rebellion period, ca. 1899 to 1901 C.E. An intimidating and sizable executioner's sword of variety known as a dao (or dadao, literally "big knife") with a curved, forged-steel blade bearing a sharpened edge. The blade is decorated with beautiful engraved decor with Buddhist "cloud" motifs. Small iron guard to position the hand and prevent slipping onto the blade, but of no defensive function. The blade tang is inserted inside a bronze handle that ends in a bone pommel. Boxer executioners visited villages, with the red streamers of their swords raised on the back, ferreting out foreigners, Christians, and those perceived too sympathetic to them, who were rounded up and decapitated for all to see. The very volume of their work dictated that they must act quickly and move on leaving carnage and a message in blood. An estimated 32,000 Chinese Christians and 200 foreign missionaries were executed. An estimated 100,000-300,000 Boxers were eventually defeated by 150,000 Chinese and European forces.
Théodore Rousseau (1812 Paris - 1867 Barbizon)In the Forest of Fontainebleau, oil on panel, 46 cm x 78,5 cm panel dimensions, signed, partly retouched, slightly craquelured, partly superficial scratches, paint chips A cow stands in a small clearing in the forest of Fontainebleau. This simple scene is captured by Théodore Rousseau, who, through his painterly skill, manages to lend it beauty and at the same time create a mystical atmosphere. Rousseau skilfully used light and shadow to capture the depth and texture of the forest. Large, mighty deciduous trees cast dense shadows on the forest floor. The colour palette is characterised by various shades of green and warm browns, creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. Rousseau had a special ability to depict the natural world in all its splendour and beauty. In this painting, you can literally feel the stillness of the forest and the reverence for nature. It conveys a sense of seclusion and connection with nature that is typical of the works of the Barbizon school.
The Rake's Family', portfolio with 11/+1 colour lithographs on Hahnemühle laid paper, title page, foreword by Christian Ahrens, each 140 cm x 100 cm sheet dimensions, published by Quensen/Steinmann, Lamspringe October 1995, each signed, 95 dated, 29/33 numbered, dry stamp, titled in print, partly inscribed, numbered on title page, sheet margins partly bumped, minimally creased, literature: Cat. rais. Geuer 1995.1.1-1.12In 1994 Jörg Immendorff took on the task of designing the set and costumes for a new production of Igor Stravinsky's opera ''The Rake's Progress'' (''Der Werdegang eines Wüstlings'') at the Salzburg Festival. This artistic venture led him into a fascinating dialogue with the opera itself, which in turn was based on the visual works of the English painter William Hogarth. Between 1733 and 1735, Hogarth created an impressive series of paintings and engravings depicting the descent and fall of Tom Rakewell. Tom was the profligate son of a rich merchant who squandered his fortune in London and eventually ended up in an asylum. This pictorial representation formed the basis for Stravinsky's opera, which in turn inspired Immendorff's artistic creation. Immendorff's reinterpretation of the Stravinsky opera as well as Hogarth's works found expression not only in the impressive stage design of the Salzburg Festival, but also in the sequence ''The Rake's Family'', a collection of twelve impressive lithographs. These large-format works demonstrated Immendorff's masterful virtuosity and his extraordinary talent for receiving and reinterpreting art-historical motifs and themes in an effective way. In these works, symbols of depravity, transience and art were impressively combined. Immendorff thus created a powerful testimony to human self-reflection and, at the same time, reflection on art. His artistic work expressed a deep engagement with the themes of opera and Hogarth's works, and this reflection was fascinatingly portrayed in his works both on stage and on canvas.

H.M Queen Elizabeth II; A handwritten Letter dated 2nd May 1958, on Windsor Castle headed note paper to Kate Day, Her Majesty's Milliner; 'Dear Miss Day, It was a most kind thought to send me flowers and I send you my grateful thanks. I am so very sorry to hear about the great difficulties for your business, and I do feel for you so much. In these days, it must be a continual struggle all the time, and anything extra may be too much to withstand. If it is any consolation, I do want you to know how very satisfied I have been with my hats and I have always enjoyed wearing them, even the funny ones! It does make all the difference if one can feel confident about one's hats, and that I can truthfully say, has always been the case with yours. You have always been so helpful and kind too, and so has Miss Sexton. Bobo, in confidence, also told me about Mr. Hartnell's sister - how very sad for him. I knew that he had heard bad news of someone, for he was very upset one day at Clarence House, when talking to Bobo's sister Ruby. Thanking you again so much for thinking of me with my cold - particularly sitting at home with Pall Mall winning The 2,000 Guineas! Yours Sincerely Elizabeth R' Norman Hartnell was a leading British fashion designer, who supplied many outfits for Her Majesty and Her lady's, including being commissioned to design the Coronation Gown.
