Von nâchtlichem Hofieren - Of nightly courting: By moonlight and starlight, a naked beauty pours lye from her chamber pot on five fools, three musicians and two singers who are paying her court, that is, serenading her. Some paper restauration of the margins slightly affecting the woodcut Bassia Germania on the backside / Literature: Michel Wolgemut, Painter, designer of woodcuts. At an early stage of his career he is thought to have assisted Hans Pleydenwurff (c. 1420-72) in Nuremberg. In 1473 he married Hans Pleydenwurff's widow, thereby inheriting this artist's workshop. Wolgemut taught Albrecht Dürer from 1486 to 1489. That Dürer held his master in high esteem is implied in a letter he wrote in 1506 from Venice to his friend Willibald Pirckheimer in Nuremberg, in which he recommends Wolgemut as a teacher for his younger brother Hans Dürer. Dürer also painted a portrait of Wolgemut in 1519. Wolgemut's stepson, Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (c. 1458-94), worked with him and by 1491 had become his partner. The Wolgemut workshop was the most active in Nuremberg during this period. Documented altarpieces for several churches. Together with Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, Wolgemut was responsible for the production of the woodblocks for Hartmann Schedel's 'Weltchronik' published in 1493 by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg (Text from Bartrum 1995). It shows an elderly scholar in his study, transfixed by the apparition of a blazing disc of light enclosing a series of letters. The scene may represent an alchemist, but does not correspond with traditional representations of the subject. The shining disc also remains unexplained, although the letters ‘INRI’ match the inscription placed over Christ’s head during the crucifixion. The scene possibly shows an allegory of faith; the letters surrounding the disc are intended to be indecipherable, reminding the learned scholar that human knowledge is limited and ambiguous, in contrast with the clarity of divine wisdom. Master of the Echevinage of Rouen - Eight Miniatures in a Shrine - C.1457-80 / Description: Mounted in a 17th century's wooden shrine, folding like a triptich, are eight high quality leaves from an illuminated manuscript on vellum, each with a large miniature (9,50 x 6,00 cm) and fully decorated borders, historiated with small figures, animals, and grotesques. All miniatures are from the same manuscript and by the same artist: the Master of the Echevinage de Rouen (Act. 1457-1480). The manuscript was made for a couple with the initials A and M. These initials united by a piece of cloth are found in the bottom left corner of the last miniature, maybe referring to it's purpose as a wedding gift. The sequence of the miniatures includes seven miniatures from the Hours of the Virgin and one miniature (Pentecost) for the Hours of the Holy Spirit. They are an excellent example of the high quality of illumination made in the city of Rouen. Following the end of the English occupation of Normandy in1453 at the end of the Hundred Years' War, a new circle of clients in Rouen lead to a high demand, including Books of Hours, historical, and juridical texts. The best illumination of this period is attributed to the Master of the Échevinage de Rouen, named after a group of manuscripts made for the échevins, the aldermen of Rouen. one of the first public authorities in France to assemble a public library. The Master is thought to have managed an efficient workshop and to have hired assistants who were able to paint in his style. This artist was the most successful Norman illuminator of the third quarter of the 15th century, while his style and repertoire were continued by the next generation of Rouen artists. Based on the high quality of the borders, particularly noticeable in the white arabesques, the work can be attributed to the Master himself, rather than to a member of his workshop. His own work has the typical high quality borders like we find here. All together a very nice set, interesting in terms of use. / Dimensions: 17,00 x 12,00 cm (each) / Condition: The pages from the 15th century are glued on their frame, yellowed, surface dirt, degeneration of ink, especially the green colours. The shrine of the 17th century is gilded and with red arabesque decorations at the inside, it's general condition is good with intact metal hinges, closing well, occasional defect, missing small fragments of wood. To be considered as a rare an interesting, valuable piece of antiques. / Literature: The illuminator ,the Master of the Rouen Échevinage (also known as the Master of the Geneva Latini), named for the splendid manuscripts he painted for the Bibliothèque des Echevins in Rouen, the public library assembled by the aldermen of the city. The Master was the dominant illuminator in Rouen after the departure of the English in 1449, when the city became a flourishing center of manuscript production: his career began c.1460 and continued into the 1480s (when he illuminated a manuscripfor t Pierre de Choisnet, Le Livre des trois âges de l'homme, Paris, BnF, Smith-Lesouëf 70). / Medium: Miniatures on Vellum /Circa: 1457-1480

Jan Neyen was a Franciscan friar and diplomat from the Habsburg Netherlands, who was involved in negotiating the Twelve Years Truce of 1609–1621'. At the bottom a handwritten text that emphasize his courage and perseverance to realize this treaty. On te wall on top the date of te portrait 'Aetat XXXIIX °° IDC IIX' So he shoud have been 38 years in 1608 but that does not really match with his given date of birth and his physiognomy. More likely he was 48 years and the engraver missed an X in the date. Here a fourth state fourth state signed below and at right of inscription in lower margin: "M. à Mierevelt pinxit." and "J. Muller sculpsit" and "Cum privil Sexen. / Ordin. Holland.". The engraving dates from 1608. / Dimensions: 33,00 x 23,50 cm / Condition: A very good impression of the fourth state with full plate border and margins on a laid paper with a larger crowned shield watermark. The current lot features a 'Racing Dial', recognisable by the 'alternating' minute track to the outside. Unlike most minute tracks, this iteration is split into intervals that protrude in and out from the dial edge. They take this particular form in order to make them as visible and easily-readable at a glance as possible, handy for the driver or navigator using it for its intended purpose. The 145.012 Red Racing Dial Speedmaster is one of the rarest Omega watches ever produced. So rare are they that at one point they were assumed to be prototypes that mistakenly left the factory. There are two types, one with 'Professional' to the dial and one without, referred to as 'Pre-Professional.' This example is a Professional and recent estimates put the total production numbers for this iteration at just 5-10. Alongside the white alternating minute track, it is the red hour markers, teamed with red hands, which marks out these incredibly rare watches. This example comes from the son of the original owner. As he recounts it, his father was prompted by his employer to visit a jeweller of his choice to select a watch thanking him for 50 years of service. On attending a small family-run jeweller in Hamilton, a town in the west of Scotland, he chose the Speedmaster, unaware of its rarity, as was the jeweller presumably. He wore the watch frequently, eventually leaving it to the vendor who kept it in a drawer for approximately forty years until early 2024.Complete with box and International Guarantee, this lot presents a wonderful opportunity to own an incredibly rare and very significant piece of Omega history. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rolex. An extremely rare 18K gold 'Kew A' manual wind wristwatchModel: Rolex Oyster Observatory ChronometerReference: 6210Date: Circa 1955Movement: Jewelled gilt manual wind, inscribed Kew A tested, large jewels to centre, escape wheel and balance with end caps, freesprung compensated balance with timing screws, No.4161Dial: Reprinted silvered, applied gilt baton hour markers, black outer minute divisions with luminous dot 5 minute markers, subsidiary seconds at 6, gilt lance handsCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back with personal engraving, No.97473Strap/Bracelet: Brown Rolex leatherBuckle/Clasp: Signed gilt buckleSigned: Case, dial & movementSize: 35mm Accompaniments: Rolex boxFootnotes:The Kew A Certificate watches are some of the rarest series watches made by Rolex. Since every one was numbered and listed separately, we know exactly how many were produced and that only 136 successfully passed through to attain the coveted 'KEW A' Certificate. The test is carried out over 45 days and includes temperature fluctuations and was designed by the Royal Navy for ship's chronometers. Rolex made a very special effort to obtain these results and the watches were specially made for the tests. Using a 10-1/2 ligne 700 calibre base movement, unusually in pink gilt, with a completely re-calibrated escapement and reworked nickelled balance bridge. They used a Nivorox freesprung and exceptionally fine balance with a Breguet overcoil creating the calibre known to Rolex as the 720. This project was overseen by one of the best 'regulators' of the time, Jean Matile, who obtained various records from 1925, including the Neuchatel best ever result for a wristwatch with 8.4 points and the astonishing 93.8 points at Kew also for a wristwatch movement. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Whilst the Zulus were occupied with the slaughter of these men a lull took place, during which Private John Williams, who, with two patients, were the only men now left alive in this ward, succeeded in knocking a hole in the partition, and in taking the two patients into the next ward, where he found Private Hook.
