Lot 1178

A RARE FRENCH ROBERT-HOUDIN FIRST SERIES MYSTERY TIMEPIECE OR 'PENDULE MYSTERIEUSE'JEAN EUGENE ROBERT-HOUDIN, PARIS, CIRCA 1840The circular eight-day countwheel bell striking back-wound movement with anchor escapement for regulation by a pendulum swinging in front of the movement, the backplate with central pinwheel contrate take-off for the vertical arbor driving the dial motionwork above, together with visible strike detents and signed ROBERT HOUDIN, PARIS, contained within an ogee-shaped plinth-form case applied with a gilt mount cast with a putto within foliate scrollwork to fascia over skirt base with repeating lozenge cast cavetto top moulding and scallop shell centred scroll cast apron terminating with scroll volute side supports, the rear with fixed back panel incorporating regulation square over winding holes, the surmount cast as a fanciful chimera issuing a leafy scroll upright supporting the 3.5 inch white enamel Roman numeral dial from behind, with steel moon hands within repeating foliate scroll cast bezel, on original ebonised ogee-shaped plinth with leaf moulded skirt and cut with a slot to allow for the swing of a pendulum to top surface, (lacking pendulum).40cm (15.75ins) high, 18cm (7.25ins) wide, 11cm (4.25ins) deep at the plinth. Provenance:From the personal collection of the late Paul Daniels (1938-2016), magician, illusionist and television personality. Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin was born in Blois 1805 and trained a clockmaker under his father, Prosper Robert. In 1830 he married into the famous Houdin family of clockmakers hence added Houdin with a hyphen (after Robert) to his name. He moved to Paris and worked from 63 rue de Temple and, with a strong interest in illusion, he worked on developing a series of timepieces where the motion of the hands on the dial appear detached from any form of driving mechanism of movement. He first exhibited his timepieces at the 1839 French Industry and Universal Exhibition where he was awarded the first of many bronze, silver and gold medals obtained through successive exhibitions held in 1844, 1855 and 1859.During the 1840's Robert-Houdon's success was such that he was able to relocate to larger premises at 13 rue Vendome where he continued to develop his mystery timepieces as well as take an increasing interest in automata which he exhibited at the 1844 exhibition to great acclaim. In addition to being a talented and inventive maker of clocks and automata Robert-Houdin also had great stage presence. He opened his own conjuring theatre at 14 Galerie de Valois at the Palais Royal and, on 3rd July 1845, he premiered the first of his four 'Soirees Fantastiques' where he paraded a host of mechanical marvels that would respond to his voice, obeying the commands that spectators would suggest. His fame was such that in 1848 he travelled to London to perform at the St. James's Theatre, and also before Queen Victoria, who extended a personal invitation to have him perform at Buckingham Palace.During the 1850's Robert-Houdin developed an interest in electrical horology filing a patent for an electric master clock in 1855, as well as exhibiting alongside Maison Destouche at the Universal Exhibition that year. It is, however, Robert-Houdin's contribution to illusion and magic for which he is best remembered. He was the first illusionist to utilise technology in magic and is considered to be one of France's most famous magicians writing many books on the subject. After his death in 1871, is legacy is such, that he has by many, been considered the father of modern magic. The present lot belongs to Robert-Houdin's first series of mystery timepieces developed during the late 1830's with the illusion being the apparent lack of visible motive force for the dial. Condition Report: Movement is essentially in working condition as in the escapement will beat and the clock will sound the hour on the bell, however there is no pendulum present. The movement itself is a little discoloured/dirty hence a precautionary clean/service is advisable, and adjustment will probably be required. The drive to the dial is complete and working hence the hands move with the motion of the movement. The enamel dial panel appears to be in fine condition with no cracks or chips visible with the naked eye. The gilding has mellowed a little with some spots of discolouration/oxidation. The cast upright has some Verdigris within the patination and the sides (with patinated finish) have at some point been lacquered which is now breaking down resulting in unevenness within the finish. The rear panel for the movement may be a well-made replacement. Otherwise faults are essentially limited to patches of spotting/discolouration. The ebonised stand is in good condition with only light wear/rubbing and age-related degradation to the velvet top surface. There is no pendulum or key present with the clock. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 1235

A FINE GEORGE III WOODEN-DIALLED FUSEE WALL DIAL TIMEPIECE WITH PROVENANCE TO SOMERSET HOUSEJAMES TREGENT, LONDON, CIRCA 1800The four pillar single fusee movement with tapered plates and anchor escapement regulated by lenticular bob pendulum, the 14.5 inch circular cream painted wooden Roman numeral dial signed JAMES TREGENT, LONDON to centre and with pierced brass hands, set behind heavy hinged cast brass cavetto moulded glazed bezel, applied to the dial panel incorporating narrow complex moulded wooden surround fitted via pegs onto rear box case with door to the right hand side and pendulum access flap to the curved base; the side door applied with paper labels inscribed in ink 16580, J.(or I.)R.O. Somerset House, Room 141 Sub G. and 7533, 11-4-49., J.(or I.)R.O. Somerset House, Centre Block Room 141, Stamping Room, Repair 1-14 Dial Block.43cm (17ins) diameter, 16cm (6.25ins) deep. James Tregent is recorded in Britten, F.J. Old Clocks and Watches & Their Makers as a famous maker who worked in London from 35 Strand in 1775 and then at 29 Cranborne Street, Leicester Square by 1780. He was appointed an honorary fellow of the Clockmaker's Company in 1781 and became watchmaker to the Prince of Wales. Tregent and was intimate with Garrick, Sheridan and other notabilities of the theatre, Kelly refers to him as 'Mr. Tregent the celebrated French watch maker' and relates how Sheridan by attributing his proverbial unpunctuality to the lack of a timepiece obtained from Harris, proprietor of Covent Garden Theatre, a watch of Tregent's make. The Duke of Sussex paid him £400 for a repeater and alarm travelling watch; a bracket clock by him was in the in the Wetherfield collection, and another with Battersea enamel dial (possibly made by his brother the enameller Anthony Tregent) was in the Schreiber collection. James Tregent died in 1804. The present timepiece would have been made at around the same time as extensive building works at Somerset House (under James Wyatt who succeeded George Chambers in 1796) were coming to an end in 1801. It is tantalising to think that this timepiece was supplied for use in the building at around this time; indeed James Tregent would have been a suitable candidate for supplying a timepiece for use in such a prestigious location. A cursory search has not revealed the location of room 141 within the centre block, nor the meaning of 'J.R.O.'. However the reference to the 'Stamping Room' may indicate that the initials may actually be 'I.R.O' relating to the Inland revenue Office, and that the present timepiece may have been located in the room traditionally used for General Duty embossing/stamping. Condition Report: The movement is in relatively clean working condition, the train has been repinioned (no doubt to address wear from 200 years of constant use) but there is no visible evidence of any alteration from the original layout. The backplate has spare screw holes for a pendulum holdfast clip which is no longer present. The dial is in fine condition retaining pleasing old surface; the black numerals and signature has been carefully 'strengthened' and there is a horizontal shrinkage crack across the centre. The brass bezel is in good condition with sound hinge and retaining its lock. The wooden surround has some old age-related cracking. Shrinkage and few minor bumps and scuffs. The rear box case is in good original condition. Then curved base has a small veneer patch repair to the rear left hand corner; the flap also has a small veneer patch repair and s section of very slender cockbeading missing from the leading edge. Otherwise faults to the case are limited to minor bumps, scuffs, shrinkage and other age-related blemishes.Timepiece has a pendulum and a case key but no winder. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 1177

A FRENCH ROBERT-HOUDIN SECOND SERIES MYSTERY TIMEPIECE OR 'PENDULE MYSTERIEUSE'JEAN EUGENE ROBERT-HOUDIN, PARIS, MID 19th CENTURYThe circular eight-day countwheel bell striking back-wound movement with anchor escapement for regulation by a pendulum swinging in front of the movement, the backplate with central pinwheel contrate take-off for the vertical arbor driving the dial motionwork above, together with visible strike detents and signed ROBERT HOUDIN, PARIS, contained within an ogee-shaped plinth-form case applied with a gilt mount cast with a pair of winged putti over leafy sprays to fascia, over skirt base with repeating lozenge cast cavetto top moulding and scroll cast apron terminating with gadrooned sides, the rear with fixed back panel incorporating regulation and hand-setting squares and stamped with oval BREVET, D'INVITATION over winding holes, the surmount with a foliate cast gilt pedestal applied with side scrolls and issuing a pair of splayed leafy brackets supporting the 4.5 inch circular clear glass Roman numeral dial signed ROBERT-HOUDIN to centre and with single gilt arrow hand set within slender gilt ring surround, on original shaped giltwood plinth applied with rococo scrollwork and cut with a slot to allow for the swing of a pendulum to top surface, (pendulum lacking).42cm (16.5ins) high, 17.5cm (7.ins) wide, 11cm (4.25ins) deep at the plinth. Provenance:From the personal collection of the late Paul Daniels (1938-2016), magician, illusionist and television personality. Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin was born in Blois 1805 and trained a clockmaker under his father, Prosper Robert. After his death in 1871, is legacy is such, that he has by many, been considered the father of modern magic. The present lot belongs to Robert-Houdin's 'second series' developed in around 1840 with the illusion being the mystery as to what causes the hand to move whilst 'floating' in the middle of a glass dial with no apparent connection to a movement or motionwork. The timepiece operates by having the hand fixed to a second glass plate set behind the dial, which revolves through mechanical connection via the pair of foliate supports supporting the dial assembly. Condition Report: Movement is essentially in working condition as in the escapement will beat and the hammer for the hour bell will operate, however there is no pendulum present. The linkages to drive the dial are present however the fitment of the dial assembly is a little loose hence there are alignment issues causing the drive for the dial to be unreliable. As nothing appears to be obviously broken or missing it is most likely that drive can be made reliable through adjustment to the fitment of the dial assembly. The movement itself is a little discoloured/dirty hence a precautionary clean/service is advisable, and adjustment will probably be required. The dial assembly is in good condition with no visible chips to the glass or noticeable wear. The gilding has mellowed a little with some spots of discolouration/oxidation and the areas with patinated finish have some patches of spotting/discolouration. The giltwood stand is in good condition with only light wear/rubbing and age-related degradation to the velvet top surface. There is no pendulum or key present with the clock. Condition Report Disclaimer

Fowles. R.F.C.) mounted for wear, nearly very fine, a rare combination (5) £800-£1,200 --- M.S.M. London Gazette 1 January 1917. Approximately 140 Army Meritorious Service Medals were awarded to Royal Flying Corps personnel.
Permanent Forces of the Empire L.S. & G.C. Southern Rhodesia Gazette 21 October 1927. Ernest ‘Turk’ Fowles was born in Bracknell, Berkshire, in 1887. He initially served with the Grenadier Guards between August 1909 and June 1912, prior to transferring to the newly formed Royal Flying Corps on 27 June 1912. Fowles advanced to Corporal in September 1914, and to Sergeant in March 1915. He served during the Great War in the French theatre of War between February 1916 and July 1917, and between May 1918 and February 1919. Fowles served with the British South Africa Police after the War. The following (which probably includes embellishments regarding his RFC career!) appeared as his obituary in the B.S.A. Police Journal Outpost in 1974: ‘With deep sorrow we record the death in Durban on April 17 of Ernest ‘Turk’ Fowles at the age of 82. Mr Fowles was born in Berkshire and joined the Grenadier Guards on leaving school. In May, 1912, Turk was one of the first applicants for transfer to the embryo Royal Flying Corps, military aviation in Britain up to then having been the responsibility of the 55th (Balloon) Coy., Royal Engineers. Mr. Fowles joined No. 1 Squadron then equipped with balloons, kits (man-lifting) and four airships. In early 1913 he was sent to the Central Flying School at Upavon to join the select band that included virtually all the British air aces of World War I and other notables such as a ‘Major’ Trenchard (who was to influence the future of not only the Royal Air Force but also the British Police Force in later years) and a gentleman named Winston Churchill who was taught to fly at Upavon and also signed Turk’s navigation certificate. In March 1919 having survived the development flights and other vagaries of almost every type of allied fighter and bomber aircraft, and having been awarded the Meritorious Service in 1916, Turk opted for the ‘peace and quiet’ of a career in the B.S.A. Police. Mr Fowles attested on April 26, 1919, and served with distinction for 14 years in Mashonaland before transferring the Permanent Staff Corps. He spent a further 12 years with the Staff Corps before retiring with the rank of Captain in 1945. He then spent some time with the Native Department at Wedza, ranched at Marandellas and worked on the Salisbury Tobacco Floors before seeking retirement in Natal in 1957. To his widow, Connie, and daughter Jean, we extend the sincere condolences of all who were privileged to know such a wonderful character.’ Sold with copied research.

A Great War 1916 ‘Western Front’ M.M. group of four awarded to Sergeant E. Lee, 15th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery Military Medal, G.V.R. (83851 Gnr: E. C.F.A.) tarnished, very fine (4) £300-£400 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- M.M. London Gazette 18 July 1917. The original recommendation states: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Railway Embarkment near Vimy, on May 13th 1916. When his battery was being heavily shelled, both entrances to the deep dugout were blown in by enemy shells, with delay action fuzes. There were five men in the dugout at the time, which had not been connected up between the two entrances. Gunners Lee and Crocker seeing the situation and knowing that the men could not last long in the small dugout, despite the hostile shelling dug an opening into the dugout, and liberated the imprisoned men. The men relieved were in a very exhausted condition, and it was due to the great courage and resourcefulness displayed by those two men that the lives of the five men in the dugout were saved.’ Edgar Lee was born in March 1891. He enlisted in the 15th Battery, 4th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery at Toronto, Ontario, in December 1914. Lee served with the Battery in the French theatre of War and was demobilised in May 1919.

Lot 315

A rare Great War ‘India theatre’ M.S.M. group of six awarded to Sergeant Major 2nd Class R. T. Short, Royal Air Force, late Army Ordnance Corps 1914-15 Star (216 Q.M. Sjt. R. T. Short, A.O.C.); British War and Victory Medals (338059. S.M. 2. R. T. Short. R.A.F.); Delhi Durbar 1911 (Q.M.S. Short. A.O.C.) neatly engraved naming; Royal Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, G.V.R. (216. S.M. 2 R. T. Short) naming slightly rubbed, and missing unit; Royal Air Force L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (338059. S.M. 2. R. T. Short. R.A.F.) mounted on card for display, (6) £600-£800 --- M.S.M. London Gazette 3 June 1919 (India). Awarded the M.S.M. for services in India, one of just 4 M.S.M.s awarded to the R.A.F. for this theatre during the Great War. Reginald Thomas Short was born in Plymouth, Devon, in December 1876. He enlisted in the Army Ordnance Corps in August 1901, and was attached as Armament Quartermaster Sergeant attached to the 66th Battery, Royal Field Artillery at Jhansi, India in 1911 (Delhi Durbar confirmed on the roll of Ordnance Department - Headquarters, 6th Brigade A.O.C.) Short remained in India throughout the Great War, and according to his MIC he had some affiliation with the Royal Flying Corps. This may well have been behind his decision to transfer to the Royal Air Force on its formation. At some stage he re-engaged for a term of 21 years. Short’s service record is a little confusing in that an original entry shows transfer to the R.A.F. as being on 5 August 1918 - this is later amended to 1 April 1918. This could be the part explanation of his A.O.C. Service Number ‘216’ continuing to be used during the first few months of the new organisation. Short’s R.A.F. M.S.M. is gazetted on 3 June 1919 as ‘216 S/M2, and surprisingly the medal itself is so named - but with the exception of his unit. Obviously by this time he had the R.A.F. number ‘338059’. At the time of transfer his unit was R.A.F. Air Park, India confirming his previous attached service to the R.F.C. Short remained with the above unit until leaving for the UK, 15 May 1920 (R.A.F. L.S. & G.C. announced in AMO N.119/1922, but with an effective date of 13 August 1919). His only unit thereafter being the School of Technical Training, Manston, where he remained until discharged to pension on completion of 21 years’ qualifying service, on 13 August 1922. The confusion with the dates of his transfer form the A.O.C. appears to have continued with the award of his medals - with them all being issued a year or two after his discharge. Short died in Truro, Devon, in 1945. Sold with copied research.

Lot 132

A Great War ‘Egyptian theatre’ M.C. group of four awarded to Major L. Gall, 1st City of London Yeomanry and 25th Cavalry Frontier Force, Indian Army Military Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued; 1914-15 Star (Capt. L. Gall. 25-Cavalry.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaves (Major L. Gall.) minor patch of staining to obverse of VM, generally very fine (4) £600-£800 --- M.C. London Gazette 3 June 1916. Lawrence Gall was born on 10 September 1884 and educated at Cheltenham College. Appointed to a commission on 21 January 1903, he is listed as a newly promoted Captain in the Cheltenham Looker-on of 6 April 1912 and witnessed initial service at home upon the outbreak of the Great War as Captain in the 1st County of London Yeomanry. Transferred to the 25th Cavalry Frontier Force, Indian Army, he served in Egypt from 28 April 1915 and was advanced Major. Composed of four distinct squadrons of Sikhs, Dogras, Punjabi Muslims and Hindustani Muslims/Pathans, the 25th Cavalry were later posted to East Africa and saw fighting at Nahungo and Chingwea. Involved in the pursuit of General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck to the Portuguese African border, their impressive campaign against the Schutztruppe finally ground to a halt in consequence of illness transmitted by the bites of tsetse flies. Gall later applied for his medals - which were issued by the India Office mint - on 17 February 1922, his address at that time given as 90 Seymour Street, Hyde Park, W.2.

Lot 307

Hunter.); Memorial Plaque (Robert Gibson Hunter) generally very fine (4) £200-£300 --- Robert Gibson Hunter was the son of Robert and Harriette Mary Hunter, of Kirkmailing, Larbert, Stirlingshire. He served during the Great War with "A" Company, 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in the French theatre of War from 28 July 1915. A Great War ‘Italian theatre’ Piave River Crossing M.C. group of four awarded to Second Lieutenant O. J. Olding, 8th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment Military Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued; British War and Victory Medals (2. Lieut. O. J. Olding.); together with the recipient’s Italian Armata Altipiani Medal 1918, silver, unnamed as issued, nearly extremely fine (4) £600-£800 --- M.C. London Gazette 10 December 1919: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 27th October 1918, near Cimadolmo. The courage and leadership of this officer throughout the whole action were most praiseworthy. At the critical stage during the wading through the Piave river, and the continuation of the advance upon reaching the mainland under heavy machine and rifle fire, he led his platoon forward with great skill and control. Later by the tactical handling of his platoon, he captured several enemy strong points with a large number of prisoners and machine guns with the minimum number of casualties. He did fine work.’ Oliver James Olding was born in Southampton in 1891. A shopman by occupation, he attested at Portsmouth as a Private in the Hampshire Regiment for the duration of the War on 17 November 1915. He joined the 15th Battalion at Etaples on 1 June 1916; attached to the 9th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment on the Somme on 11 July 1916, the battalion took part in the actions at Bazentin Le Grand, High Wood, and Ginchy between July and September 1916. Olding was formally transferred to the 9th Battalion on 9 October 1916 with the rank of Corporal. Posted to an Officer Cadet Battalion at Oxford on 9 March 1917, he was commissioned temporary Second Lieutenant in the Devonshire Regiment on 27 June 1917 and transferred the 8th (Service) Battalion near Bullecourt on 27 June 1917. The 8th Battalion entrained for Italy on 18 November 1917 and took over the trenches along the River Piave on 26 January 1918, subsequently transferring to the Asiago Plateau in April 1918. He commanded No. 4 Party, ‘C’ Company during the raid on Vaister, on the Asiago Plateau, on 4 May 1918, and served as Second in Command of ‘C’ Company during the operations to cross the River Piave on 26-27 October 1918, for which services he was awarded the Military Cross. Advanced Temporary Lieutenant, he relinquished his commission on completion of service on 21 February 1920, and retained the rank of Lieutenant. Following the Great War he obtained employment as a Hotel Steward and died in hospital at Coulsden, Surrey, on 3 February 1929, aged 36. Note: The Armata Altipiani Medal 1918 was awarded for the Battle of the Piave, Asiago Plateau, on 15 June 1918. About 450 of these medals were awarded to British Officers. The medal is not official but was created by the Italian authorities on the initiative of General Montuori, commander of the Italian 6th Army, and awarded early in 1919 to Italian, British and French officers of the forces that had fought in the Battle of the Piave from 15 to 24 June 1918.
