A fully hallmarked 12ct gold thimble, mark of C. C. May & Sons (Charles May), London 1927, of traditional form, with floral lower section and hobnail upper, 2.5cm high, 4.5gIn 1854, the British gold standard was lowered to include 15, 12 and 9ct, following petitions from watchmakers. 9ct and 15ct were both in common use, but 12ct was not often used and in 1932, the 15ct and 12ct standards were both scrapped in favour of a new 14ct standard. Items bearing full 12ct hallmarks are now rare and extremely collectable.
