Late Victorian repeating carriage clock retailed by Dent, 35 Cockspur Street, London, striking on gong with enamel dial, gilt brass case of small proportions with strike/ silent lever to underside , in original travelling case . The clock 13cm highCondition report: Good original condition , working , chiming and repeating. It still has its original balance staff. The case is in good order with some gilding wear, all the glasses are in good order. The travelling case is in poor order.

At one time owned by Sir David Lewis Macpherson, KCMG PC (1818 – 1896) of Toronto. The glazed case with rippled handle over the bevelled glass rectangular inspection panel and repeat button, the signed white rectangular Arabic dial with blued-steel Breguet style moon hands over a subsidiary alarm dial. The twin train movement with large silvered platform escapement with bi-metallic compensated balance, striking the hours, half hours and quarters on a pair of coiled blued-steel gongs mounted on a block stamped F.D. Ticking, striking and repeating. Sold with a brass double ended winding key stamped 23166, and the original leather travelling case with a plaque mounted into the base of the handle which reads 'Hon.D.L McPherson Toronto.' 18cms (7ins) high (3)Footnotes:The travelling case contains a 19th century handwritten note on the rear of a business card for 'William Tucker, Jeweller, Clare Street, Bristol. William Tucker registered in the 1865 and 1871 Bristol directories as a gold and silversmith, jeweller, watchmaker &c. at 24 Clare Street.The notes offer directions for use which remain as relevant today as they were 150 years ago. 'The key is kept in small receptacle at back of case. Clock requires winding weekly - Both springs must be wound - the small end of key is only used to set the hands, which is done by the small centre square at back. Do not turn the hands backwards & in putting hours on, pause at the half hour & hour to allow clock to strike. The repeater is automatic & can be used when clock is in or out of case but please press firmly down. To regulate: if slow move index towards F or Vice Versa'The lid of the case bears the name of Sir David Lewis Macpherson, KCMG PC (1818 – 1896). He was a Canadian businessman and political figure, and served as a member of the Senate of Canada from 1867 to 1896. The accompanying invoice states the movement carries the oval stamp of Henri Jacot.Jacot were Parisian makers of fine carriage clocks, Henry Jacot senior died in 1868; according to his obituary, his end was saddened by a 'cruel mistake' at the 1867 Exhibition, when he had not been awarded a medal, but only an 'Honourable Mention'. It was rectified and he was later awarded a silver medal. Pierre and Alfred Drocourt were among the finest makers of carriage clocks in the mid to late 19th century, having a factory at Saint-Nicolas-d'Ailermont, and in Paris at Rue Debelleyme 28 and Rue de Limoges. They made superb carriage clocks that were often highly decorative and were awarded numerous medals at exhibitions, such as the Bronze Medal in Paris 1867, the Silver in Paris 1878 and the Gold in Paris 1889. Ltd, 84 Strand, No.1535The ribbed handle over a heavy bevelled glass inspection panel revealing the gilt platform and engraved cock, the sides and front glass similarly impressive, on a plinth base numbered to the underside, the lift-off solid rear door with named shuttered apertures for winding, hand-setting, and regulation, the signed and numbered white enamel dial with minute track and black Roman numerals, with blued steel hands, framed by an engraved mask of foliate scrolls against a hatched ground, the signed and numbered eight day movement with twin chain fusees, the going train with maintaining power and gilt platform supporting the engraved cock and overcoiled blued steel hairspring to a duplex escapement, the strike sounding every hour on a rectangular-section blued steel gong mounted on a block marked F.D., the backplate mounted with a subsidiary seconds dial running counterclockwise. Together with the original (distressed) travelling case and the original numbered double-ended winding and hand-setting key. 23cm (5 1/2in) highFootnotes:Provenance: This clock has possibly been in single family ownership from new. It is first mentioned in family records in 1941. An invoice dated 19th December 1950 for the overhaul, cleaning and adjusting of the clock by Charles Frodsham & Co. at a cost of £8 accompanies the lot.The use of the duplex escapement is extremely rare, if not unique in the oeuvre of Frodsham.
