Y&nbspA GEORGE III GILT PAIR-CASED VERGE POCKET WATCHFRODSHAM AND SON, LONDON, CIRCA 1795The gilt full plate fusee movement with four columnar pillars pinned through the backplate, scroll-pierced stop-iron block and verge escapement regulated by sprung three-arm steel balance with Tompion type regulation, the backplate with fine symmetrical neoclassical foliate scroll pierced and engraved balance cock with faceted diamond endstone and musical trophy at the junction with the conforming engraved foot, flanked by silvered regulation disc set within adjacent applied scroll engraved panel infill opposing signature Frodsham & Son, London, and numbered 2125, the circular white enamel Arabic numeral dial with Arabic quarters to outer track and gilt brass beetle-and-poker hands, the inner case applied with suspension post and bow at twelve o'clock and the outer applied with tortoiseshell pinned near the conforming rim mouldings. The pillar plate 3.6cm (1.375ins) diameter, the inner case 4.2cm (1.675ins) diameter; the outer case 4.8cm (4.875ins) diameter. William Frodsham senior is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as born 1728, free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1781 and died 1807. He worked from 12 Kingsgate Street, Red Lion Square, London and was appointed as one of the 'Experts' to assess Harrison's and Earnshaw's marine chronometers. He is thought to have probably been a journeyman to Justin Vulliamy and worked with his son, William junior (1755-1805), from circa 1779-1805 who is believed to have been taught the art of watch jewelling by his friend Thomas Earnshaw. This friendship led to a conflict of interest when, in 1804, Frodsham was asked by the Board of Longitude to give evidence relating to a claim for a reward by Earnshaw subsequent to the latter's development of an improved design of detached escapement. Condition Report: Watch is complete and in working condition and appears all-original. The gilding to the train, backplate and fittings is in good condition with minimal wear/rubbing and scratching to the latter. The dial has a couple of light surface scratches to the enamel otherwise appears free from visible faults. The hands are a little discoloured/oxidised. Inner case has overall patchy wear and oxidation to the gilt finish and has some very slight denting otherwise is in very good original condition. The outer case has some slight lifting and a couple of small losses to the shell border to the bezel area and some slight cracking to the rear (but no losses) a couple of pins are also missing. The clasp push button is worn and the gilding to the edge mouldings is rubbed, otherwise outer case is in good original condition. There is no winding key with this watch. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 1148

A FRENCH LOUIS XV ORMOLU MANTEL CLOCKBELIARD, PARIS, MID 18th CENTURYThe three columnar pillar two train numbered outside countwheel bell striking movement regulated by disc bob pendulum now incorporating Brocot type regulation to suspension, the square backplate with canted corners and signed Beliard h'ge du Roi AParis to the lower margin, the 4.5 inch slightly convex white enamel Roman numeral dial signed BELIARD, H'GER DUROY to centre and with Arabic five minutes beyond the outer minute track, with fine scroll pierced and engraved gilt brass hands set behind hinged moulded gilt brass convex glazed bezel, the waisted symmetrical rococo scroll cast case with leafy seed-pod finial to the tapered shaped upstand decorated with matted panels within burnished borders, over scrolls issuing floral sprays flanking the dial continuing down to form naturalistic outswept supports with shaped apron panel containing a musical trophy between, the sides with arched fretwork panels pierced to resemble floral sprays, the rear conforming to the front but with glazed hinged movement aperture and without the floral sprays and musical trophy, mounted on an integral naturalistically cast rococo scroll platform base incorporating pierced supports to each corner.35.5cm (14ins) high, 27.5cm (10.75ins) wide, 17cm (6.75ins) deep. Provenance:Sotheby's, London sale of the contents of BENACRE HALL, SUFFOLK 9-11th May 2000. Beliard 'Horloger du Roi' does not appear to be recorded in the usual sources however it is most likely that the current clock was made by the father of the renowned late 18th century clockmaker, Julien-Antoine Beliard (1758 to circa 1810), who trained under his father becoming a Master in 1786. He succeeded his father at the workshop on rue de Hurepoix, and was best known for his complex precision skeleton clocks collaborating with the enameller Joseph Coteau for his dials, and bronziers such as Nicolas Bonnet for his case mounts. Condition Report: Movement is running and striking however it is a little dirty/oxidised hence a precautionary clean/service is advised if intending to put into long-term service. As catalogued the clock has later Brocot type pendulum regulation; it is also highly probable that the escapement has been updated but we have not removed the movement from the case to confirm whether this is the case or not. The backplate however shows no obvious evidence of alteration. The dial is in fine condition with visible faults limited to a small chip adjacent to the regulation adjustment square and a small repaired (stuck back in) chip next to the left-hand winding hole. The case is dirty/discoloured but is generally in sound condition retaining old surface. The left-hand side fret has a section missing towards the upper right hand margin and the silk linings to both frets has degraded. There are two spare holes within the rear edge side scrolls suggesting the additional leafy sprays may well have been attached at some point (no longer present). Faults to the case are otherwise limited to slight casting faults, rubbing and other minor age-related blemishes.Clock is complete with pendulum and winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

The selection levers also appear to be operating as they should as well as the automaton features. The left-hand barrel pivot block is stamped 5 2 over 4 8. Both the dancing dolls appear to be in fine condition. The tine sheet is intact but with overall light patchy browning. The veneer applied to the inside surface of the lid has a few small edge chips to each side. The front has a small loss to the crossbanding at the lower edge and some noticeable scratching. The lid has wear/degradation to the polish and losses to the transfer as well as overall wear/rubbing but otherwise appears free from significant faults other than slight veneer rippling. Graining to the sides and rear has wear/scuffing; generally the case would benefit from some light cosmetic restoration.Box does not have key for the lock. Condition Report Disclaimer

South Devon Militia Medal of Merit 1799, 31mm, silver, the obverse featuring trophy of arms enclosed by a wreath, with the circumscription ‘To the South Devon Militia in Testimony of Merit 1799’, the reverse featuring the arms of Waterford, unnamed, with small loop suspension, edge bruising and light contact marks, good very fine, rare £400-£500 --- Referenced in Hastings Irwin, p.396; Balmer, V.243. The South Devon Militia were stationed in Waterford, Ireland, from 1798 to 1799. It was largely due to their presence that the rising of 1798 was contained so effectively within the city, unlike other areas which suffered greatly in the unrest. As a result of their good service, it was resolved unanimously by the Waterford Corporation that the Freedom of the City be presented in a gold box to the Colonel of the regiment, and that certain selected members of the regiment be awarded a specially struck silver medal. It is recorded in Annals of the Militia being The Records of the South Devon Regiment that ‘[t]his is the first instance amongst existing Regiments of a gift of a medal to be worn by men in recognition of military services.’ It is not known exactly how many medals were struck in total, but fewer than 10 examples are known to have survived today. Sold with copied article from the Journal of the Medal Society of Ireland, May 1994.

Six: Captain H. W. Ashby, Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Burma Star; War Medal 1939-45; India Service Medal; General Service 1918-62, 2 clasps, S.E. Asia 1945-46, Malaya (Capt. H. W. Ashby. 5. G.R.) light contact marks throughout, generally very fine and better (6) £140-£180 --- Provenance: Sotheby’s, July 1995. Harold William ‘Gus’ Ashby was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, on 18 May 1921 and was appointed to a commission in the 5th Battalion, Gurkha Rifles, in December 1943. Raised Lieutenant the following year, his service and life is detailed by the Journal of the 6th Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles Regimental Association (1991): ‘Gus joined 3/5 RGR at Nasik from “The 56th” in 1945 and as intelligence officer he was fully involved, and acquitted himself well, in many a skirmish. His leadership and man management were excellent and he had a good rapport with his men. An extrovert with a great sense of fun, he was quick to learn the language. Very tall and slim, he was an outstanding soccer player - the Battalion’s most formidable centre forward. It was not long before he met Ann, a charming girl who was soon to become his wife. They were married in Holland on his first leave. Demobilisation followed but Gus found it difficult to settle down to civilian life in the UK. He eventually rejoined the Army and returned to the Gurkha fold in 1953 for a three-year tour with 1/6 GR. He and his young family took full advantage of life in Ipoh. The Ashby’s were well liked by everyone. Ann died in 1975 and Gus was shattered. Emerging from his depression in due course, he turned his attention once again to the well-being of the Gurkha pensioner. He was quick to respond to the clarion call from the Gurkha Welfare Trusts.’ Further research notes that Ashby served in Malaya and Java between 1945 and 1947 and was serving as Company Commander when sent with his platoon to guard His Highness the Sultan of Negeri Sembilan; in Indonesia he was tasked with investigating a quinine factory being used for nefarious purposes - one Gurkha was killed and four wounded in attempting to take control of the building. Relocating in retirement to Wareham in Dorset, Ashby devoted his later years to sport and was fondly remembered by the regulars of the Half Way Inn, near Corfe Castle. The local cricket team bore his name and enjoyed many a game vying for a silver trophy in his memory; much admired for his care and concern for the Gurkha, Ashby died peacefully on 14 January 1990, his wake coinciding with the day of the great storm: ‘The battering of the gale on the church roof sounded like an artillery barrage from within. It was a sad but dramatic farewell.’ Sold with extensive copied research.
