A late Georgian / early Victorian cylinder shaped truncheon. Ebonised wood, painted with the Royal crown, Royal coat of arms, with another smaller coat of arms inset within the Royal arms. The name ‘Otley’ is painted below the arms, which would certainly refer to the West Yorkshire town. No further decoration except some small ring turning to one end. Approximately 40.5cm length. Condition: generally good. Some fading / rubbing to the painted decoration. Some knocks and contact marks to the entire length of the truncheon from service wear, but no apparent splits or repairs to the wood.
A rare 19th century Victorian truncheon, with ebonised finish, and painted with the arms of the ‘Manor of Uplyme’ in the county of Devon. Gilt and red shield with lion rampant motif, along with gilt painted lettering. Hole pierced through the truncheon where the handle meets the shaft, likely for a leather wrist strip. Approximately 41cm length. Condition: generally very good. Some painted loss to the painted decoration, plus normal light knocks and contact marks commensurate with age and use.
A rare 19th century Victorian special constables truncheon, fitted with a white metal collar named to ‘Lt Colonel The Earl of Northesk - Special Constable No.9966 Nov 1887 - Insptr B Divsion. Of traditional from, and made in hard wood, possible Lignum Vitae, with ring turned handle. Hole pierced through the handle area for attaching a wrist strap. Given the officers rank, it seems likely that the truncheon was more for ceremonial use than actual service, and it’s unknown whether his police rank was purely honorary. The white metal collar is not hallmarked, but would appear to be silver. Notes: George Carnegie (1843-1891) was the 9th Earl of Northesk. He was commissioned into the 1st Dragoon Guards in 1862, but later transferred to the Scots Fusiliers as a Lieutenant. He rose through the ranks, becoming a Captain in 1866, and a Lieutenant Colonel in 1873, before retiring in 1874. Condition: generally very good. Some surface scratching and wear to the finish, and a couple of small contact marks.
