A George III night watchman truncheon or nightstick dated 1812, the mahogany stick with turned detail and brass bands at either end and inscribed 'GR III / 1812 / HUNSLETT', and further numbered '27', overall length 46.5cm Notes: Leeds did not have a formal police force until 1836, so prior to this many factories had to employ their own night watchmen to guard their premises. In February 1812 several Leeds factories were attacked by Luddites
LOCAL INTEREST - A Victorian Shropshire Constabulary Superintendent's truncheon with the Victorian crown above an oval panel enclosing the words 'SHROPSHIRE CONSTABULARY - SUPERINTENDENT No 2', with a trail of flowers below and to the full length of the reverse, with a turned un-decorated handle, overall length 38.5cm (some paint wear)
LOCAL INTEREST - A presentation truncheon commemorating the 1926 General Strike constructed of lignum vitae and painted in bright polychrome with a crown above GR cypher, the Shropshire Coat of Arms and motto 'FLOREAT SALOPIA' above 'GENERAL STRIKE 1926', with a nicely turned wooden handle, overall length 38cm Notes: In May 1926 around 1.7 million British workers went on strike in support of miners who were being asked to accept both a 13% pay cut and longer hours. A number of special constables were recruited but sadly, due to a large number of volunteers taking on the work of those on strike, the strike was unsuccessful and the miners were forced to accept the original terms and some remained unemployed for many years afterwards. A small number of similarly decorated truncheons are known to exist with various local authority place names or coats of arms and it is thought that these were issued to members of the police to commemorate their part in the strike.
